I'd say yes but I'm biased because I fucking love turrets. Supposedly the turret can be locked dead ahead but that was impractical in combat. A pair of hispanos in the wing roots, though...
The gun does indeed lock forward, you can see on the Defiant in OP how the cockpit is a little awkwardly shaped between the turret and pilot's seat so the guns can face forward, but yeah, there's no practical way to actually fire them because they're both shooting right past the pilot and shooting through an untimed propeller.

Speaking of which, there was a turreted Hurricane, the Hotspur. It went nowhere. >But what if turret fighters were better
Even if they magically became 100% more effective they'd still get mogged by the Beau. Beau was a radar-equipped BEAST that directly led to the deaths of several Luftwaffe aces. Jesus, what a chad fucking plane.
A Defiant with 2x 20mm Oerlikon at the wings and a single 20mm Oerlikon on a flexible rear mount, however, would give me an erection.
Would some forward armament have staved off the Defiant's obsolescence?
no, because the turret weight is what made the Defiant slow, and in the air in WW2, speed is everything

>the turret can be locked dead ahead
>Supposedly the turret can be locked dead ahead
I don't think it could shoot like that. May have lacked an interrupt mechanism for one thing.
it shot over the head of the pilot, so it couldn't shoot directly forward
I think everyone agrees on this. It makes sense to have a pilot and an engineer in the back seat to handle all the data and wrangling the drones. Foisting that job and the duties of being a pilot onto one guy seems like an impossible burden.
except it turned out, one guy doing all that not only was NOT impossible, it was the superior method

>Beau
which still wouldn't outfight the best single-engine day fighter >A Defiant with 2x 20mm Oerlikon at the wings
adding yet another 150+kg on an already overweight and slow fighter
Past fighters haven't given the pilot missiles, energy weapons, electronic warfare, and an entire wing of fighter drones. It makes sense to put a WSO in NGAD, unless the WSO is an AI.
>except it turned out, one guy doing all that not only was NOT impossible, it was the superior method
You may wanna wait until there's at least some drone-swarm-boss fighter aircraft in service before you call it.

Up-engine it to the Bristol Hercules
>Up-engine it
Upengine a one-man fighter and it'll still be better

I thought he was talking about the BPD
it's true that in the past, stretching back to WW2, a systems operator was always necessary to handle additional tasks
>better
If I wanted to make historical vehicles BETTER instead of more fun I'd direct my attention to the lack of WW2 era IFVs, not putting turrets where they don't belong

True. That’s why they replaced it with something much better.

Sure. I just read it the other day.
A Moss attacked an Fw190. The 190 turned inside the Moss, who responded by racing away, and then turning back to look for the 190. But the 190 managed to lose itself in terrain by then.

True
In that particular case the Fw190 chose not to fight it out, possibly due to low fuel. It does illustrate the advantage the Fw190 has however. It's not easy for the Mosquito to convert on an Fw190; in many cases it could only speed away, after which it took time to climb and reattack from a superior position. Whereas the Fw190 could out-turn the Mosquito, after surviving the initial bounce. The speed differential wasn't such that the Mosquito could catch up with the fleeing Fw190.
Hence the Fw190 has the advantage, albeit slight; if attacked, it can choose to convert on the Mosquito or run away. Whereas the Mosquito only has one option if attacked by a Fw190: run.

Except it's less clear cut than that: it was the 190 that chose to disengage ("the 190 managed to lose itself in terrain by then"), so a victory in the tactical sense. But the mosquito (whilst in this case not able to destroy the 190) was able to achieve control of that part of the sky which from a strategic perspective is a victory.
They actually ended up building a turretless Defiant, but that just loops around to become a Hurricane, doesn't it?
They'd never have been as manueverable due to the weight of the turret, but I do wonder if they'd have been more effective if they'd occasionally paired a flight of Defiants with a flight or two of Hurricanes

ngad should suck your cock and dispense orange juice during a dogfight to almost drown the pilot and make it hard to breathe so that the cow brain mounted behind the radar will take over and use its female maternal instinct tuned to the pilot to overclock and fight fiercely for your life while you sleep tight in GLOC and have sweet dreams beamed into your brain via the helmet with the dreams directing the dogfight in conjunction with the AI-assisted female cow brain until the inevitable victory is achieved and when the pilot wakes up, he does at the airfield with 8 new kill marks being painted onto the side and then he hears a happy moo.

Beaufighters still count because of the adorable lil Lewis mount
Be it German, British or American, WW2 really saw a proliferation of beautiful heavy fighters
Thimble nose beau a cute! A CUTE!

Nah man, delete the hydrolic turret and put a single .50 there, manually controlled, il-2 type shit. You’ll save a lot of weight.
Defiant could catch up to early spits when you removed the turret, apparently.
I'm down for that, my fetish only requires rear facing armament
>Beau still not as good as single engined day fighters
True. That’s why they replaced it with something much better.
Even the Mosquito couldn't out-turn a Fw190, although it could certainly outspeed them.
They used zoom and boom tactics, mainly.

It'd be kino as hell to bring back ball turrets
it should have no men and climb to space before it did anything
if the NGAD isn't picrel world confirmed dumb and gay
