It's an AK. A well-made one, but an AK nonetheless. Amusingly, the guy who came up with it was named Balashnikov.
Point is that when you get down to it, just about any modern rifle platform is superior for an actual first world military.

plus America put a bunch of Vietnam war surplus rifles on fire sale ($100ish per rifle, galils cost about $500ish) right after the IDF adopted the galil.

Looks like they chose the Arad, which is IWI's short-stroke piston.
Is anyone even bothering with DI these days? I feel like pistons just monopolized the brains of every procurement process.

How? It's lighter, more accurate, and has less felt recoil.

Piston is a selling point. If its just DI, then its no different the thousands of M16s already in inventory. Israelis are not afraid to spend on things that make a difference, but they are still fundamentally israelites. This goes for everyone, a new rifle needs to be more than a new handguard on a 60 year old receiver, or else whats the point. Even if the improvements are more like side grades, it needs to be different.

The only thing I can imagine they want a piston for is maritime operations. DI works just fine, myth to the contrary, in dust and sand and crap -- you didn't hear any Vietnam-style horror stories coming out of the sandbox.

          >you didn't hear any Vietnam-style horror stories coming out of the sandbox.
Sure you did. Prior to the PIP, there were several stories in the press of M4s failing in Iraq and Afghanistan. The outcome of the battle of Wanat was blamed at least in part on M4 failures. Similarly, a big thing was made of jams in the ambush in which Jessica Lynch was captured.

            Anonymous

            >The outcome of the battle of Wanat
Yeah but that was in part due to having to use a semi auto 14 inch barrel low caliber carbine in a battle that called for machine guns and full auto rifles. It wasn't a flaw of the design.

Stoner's short stroke piston has a lot of advantages for a military rifle. The weight and accuracy penalty is an acceptable tradeoff for an adjustable gas system and better suppressor suitability. You can also do those things with a DI gun but then its a non-standard DI so you'd have to change the rifle anyways.

I don't need your promise. The Marines are very open about why they bought them. Tamirs are being integrated into MRIC to defend against cruise missiles (with a side of counter-rocket duty). One battery per Littoral Regiment. They're going to become a major component of Marine SHORAD for the foreseeable future.
I would hazard a bet the Marine Iron Dome is finished before the Army's Enduring Shield is, which is behind schedule, unproven, and more expensive to operate once done.
