The 90s were fucked up in post-Soviet countries. They taught a lot of people that if you leave your property somebody will take it. So a lot try to stay as long as it’s possible.

          Anonymous

It has little to do with the 90s and a lot to do with Soviet repressions. The soviets would deport families to Siberia and give their homes to people that are friends of the regime. That's how my great grandparents lost their residence and their land in the 1940s until it was finally returned to my family after the Soviet union fell

You can see a lot of them are usually older people. Some are already nearing the end of their ropes and are deeply attached to their homes and homesteads, so they feel they have little reason to leave. Some don't have any means to go anywhere and are confined to their homes, and some are "waiters" who the Russians really tend to dislike, those well and truly waiting to be liberated. "Pragmatically", if they try to evacuate, their only option is to fall deeper into the hands of the russians, who inevitably will bully and abuse them into becoming "russian citizens", and it's quite likely their property will then be inhabited, looted, and destroyed quite thoroughly by any russians stationed in the area before any combat begins.

You have americans here talking about protecting their property in a civil war scenario instead of running away, which is the best proven method to survive one by looking at examples in the XXth century (SCW, yugoslavia...)
People become attached to their land and property and lose sigh of long term survival.

with how wide the frontline is, it always feels like the war is always a few villages away so it's not perceived as a "big deal" by large amounts of less anxious people, they will only leave after seeing firsthand what artillery did to their neighbor's house, and even then may decide that the chances of getting hit are slim and it's fine to stay

The Bradley has a dual-feed system for the main gun, so the gunner can choose between HE and AP ammo on the fly. So they certainly should be HE, given the target type.

I'm curious if any lessons can be learned from Ukraine? I do wonder if the situation is considered a-typical or not. Like a lot of observers chalked up the Persian Gulf war curb-stomping to Iraqi incompentecy and corruption, but no it really does look like USA gear was decades ahead of Soviet Gear. They were still working from USSR cold war bias so the idea of big strong USSR was still in our heads.

So my feeling might be that less focus on MBT, and more on IFV's, light tanks, and maybe a position between light tank and IFV. All backed up by drones and standard army and infantry. A little less heavy armor, more mobile armor with faster movement with equipment cheap enough that a UAV taking out your armor isn't some catastrophe.

They do like the CV90, it's real nice, and is just generally more modern, the Bradley is my favorite IFV but it is 40+ years old. The US military themselves have been pondering Bradley replacements for ages but they have 12000 legacy Bradley hulls they can't just throw away so they upgrade them well enough.

          For a start it's a 35mm
You'd need less shells per house, and you'd need less for non fortifications for the same reason. If your IFV is accurate there is nothing wrong with slightly larger ammo. You're probably going to run through the ammo at similar rates.

            Anonymous

There is also a 30mm cv90. 25-30 really seems to be the sweet spot until IFVs are fitted with radars as standard then 35-50mm airbursting shells would make sense. I think we’re going to see a mix of traditionally armed IFVs and larger caliber IFVs

You don't need radars? Most programmable ammo is just timer and thus range adjusted, a generic laser rangefinder would do

That’s true in theory but no production IFVs currently have the capability. The CV90 does have an air defense variant that utilizes a radar though

The US doesn't want other countries touching their production rights. Poland wouldn't have bought K2s if America had let them have Abrams manufacturing rights.

          Anonymous

The Abrams production line was shut down in 1996. The USA has no current ability to make new Abrams and every Abrams since then has been an update on the ~9000 hulls and turrets made from 1981-1996. Only the Egyptians are still making Abrams (M1A1E) right now.

Poland wants the expertise to make and develop their own tanks, and the only 2 "western" tanks with fully operation raw to finished good production lines are K2 and Type 10, and K2 is the no brainer pick out of that list.

They do not. Usually (not always) BMPs also shrug them off. I've even seen logistics vehicles and up-armor humvees take direct hits and keep rolling (though usually Lancet can destroy or disable those). It has a very light payload and it does seem that most of their targets are logistics and light infantry vehicles, which is optimal use, but they prefer to release footage of these ineffective strikes against heavier targets for some reason

yes and no. warhead is a mining charge (KZ-6 Engineering Cumulative Charge) with similar expected performance as an RPG 7 shape charge, basically 200mm of penetration.

so that will penetrate with a good strike on the right place and won't penetrate on a bad strike or bad place.

the shape charge faces straight forward, and this leads to impacts at shallow angles or skimming penetration if the angle of attack is as bad as we often see in videos.

we also have very few full videos with battle damage assessment. only videos that have a clear visible effect after the strike are shown.

it can work, but chances are it often doesn't otherwise we would see more evidence /uncut footage

It's really annoying to constantly see people drawing cope circles implying someone will shell Tokmak with impunity 1km from the actual frontline, or that it's a game changer when they finally can.

Rail transport doesn't stop because someone puts a few rounds near a rail track. The biggest difference would be if they had the lines in the FPV drone range because it means constant harassment of every buchanka, yet even then the logistics would just get worse, not collapse.

Step one: Use single GMLRS or guided artillery shell to put hole in track.
Step two: Use conventional artillery fire to harass/kill repair crews.
Step three: Repeat step one as necessary.

Why isn't Ukraine doing it in like Svatove then? Artillery needs to move to avoid counter battery, and then drones searching their whereabouts. Rail repair meanwhile is cheap and fast. That's on top of Ukraine needing a live drone feed of the damaged section all the time and hope the drone doesn't get shot down in the meanwhile (or just run out of batteries).

            >implying someone will shell Tokmak with impunity 1km from the actual frontline
I mean they literally did that in Kherson when they drove up with a Caesar to shell the pontoon bridges.

I don't exactly remember Ceasar shelling the pontoons specifically, but pontoon bridges are easier to damage than rail, so you can spend expensive guided/extended range ammunition for those. And of course Russians still managed to somehow retreat through those pontoon bridges.

Russia will run out of repair crews long before Ukraine runs out of shells

These are feasible solutions in the presence of counter battery, and with Russians knowing there is just one salient with little cover from which they can be shelled and a counter battery radar working near the track.

Once again, apparently no analyst thinks interrupting the railway requires just Robotyne + some distance for the artillery.

Could the Russians be retarded and counter-attack every step of the way back to delay it for a few weeks? Sure. They're probably doing that RIGHT NOW. Doesn't matter though, facts are facts, and the next semi-stable point on the front is uncomfortably close.

          Cretinous post anon

I'm not gonna be delusional and say the russian front will collapse in TWO MORE WEEKS, this will take imo at least a month or two. However, if ukraine pushes another 10 km (which they've proven they're able to do, despite zigger concern trolling they've been consistently moving forwards in zapo since the counteroffensive started), they will, objectively, be able to repeatedly shell the tokmak railway with impunity. They can already do so, they're already in range, but only with more expensive munitions/guns - they wanna be able to shell the railway CONSTANTLY with their cheaper, shorter range soviet era ammo. Which brings me to my main point:
          >Rail transport doesn't stop because someone puts a few rounds near a rail track.
Correct, but give it a few more weeks and ukraine will be able to repeatedly shell the railway. Doesn't matter if you can fix the railway in two days if it's getting shelled every day multiple times does it? This will permanently make the railway unusable, and this singular rail line is the lifeblood of every russian unit west of Melitopol. It's so fucking over for ziggers lmao.

            >You need closer to a few hours to fix a railway, and probably more than a couple of dumb rounds to actually hit close enough for damage
            >Your guns meanwhile expose their positions so the effect needs to be proportional to the time spent else you're bleeding your artillery
You can show me a serious analytic who thinks it's literally over because they can dump dumb 155mm/152mm shells onto the Tokhmak railway.

Actually arriving at Tohkmak is a milestone in itself, but it would require actually contesting the railway, not just hoping to shell it once in a while. Even after to truly finish off the logistics something needs to be done about the port routes and Kerch bridge, which after Tokhmak should be well in the range of SS finally.

              Anonymous

I actually cannot show you such an analytic (as stated am not an artillery autist so would appreciate another anon's help here) but I don't follow your reasoning. If ukraine makes it 10 km further south, they WILL be able to contest the railway, this is a fact? Not just occasionally damage it, but constantly shell it faster than the russians can fix it. I don't see how this doesn't happen within the next month or so anon.

              Also
              >port routes
              >kerch bridge
              lol, lmao even
Russian logistics are and have always been almost completely dependent on rail logistics. Russia's logistic situation is already fucked up as is. If you wipe out the railway, sure they could start to bring more stuff in by port than they currently do, but that would lead to two things
              >russians having to reorient their entire logistics chain to be maritime rather than rail-based
              and
              >they would now be reliant on a less efficient, less rapid form of logistical support for them
Knowing how bad russia has been at managing logistics, even if given a few months they can sort out strengthening their maritime supply route, that's a few months where they have ZILCH logistics for everything west of melitopol. Not good.

Also, if you think kerch bridge > crimea > southern front is an adequate logistical route able to replace the tokmak railway entirely you're delusional.

Now see if russia wasn't fucking retarded they would have spent the past however many months they've had to prepare strengthening their logistics in the south in preparation for the counteroffensive, but it seems they would rather spend their time mining everything north of mariupol. And now they're fucked once they lose the tokmak railway.

No, 10km South would put them around Myrne - Nove - Kharkhove line. They would still need to fight around that line instead of dealing with the defenses around Tokhmak.
                >but constantly shell it faster than the russians can fix it.
That's wishful thinking. Railways are both hard to damage and easy to fix, unfortunately, and Russian dependency on the rail also means they are adept at fixing it.
                >Russia's logistic situation is already fucked up as is. If you wipe out the railway, sure they could start to bring more stuff in by port than they currently do, but that would lead to two things
If it was truly fucked we would see routs all around, but we don't. Static lines only seemed to help Russians. People once again have too much wishful thinking. Ukraine can't win the war by just hoping for something to collapse. Degrading rail transports means they will use more trucks, probably endangering other parts of the front from which they need to take those trucks, but it doesn't mean the Russian army will magically leave Ukraine.

                >ONE TIME and watch it with drones
Drones can absolutely be shot down if they are operating behind enemy lines. It's not easy at all, unless it's one case where you know exactly where they are supposed to be of course. Russia has been supplying Bakhmut under a swarm of drones for how many months exactly? The situation for Russia is gonna start deteriorating with Ukraine approaching Tokhmak, but just pushing a train through it won't exactly be impossible if there is still 10-15km between the railway and the grey zone.

Ah well oh shit, those assets are now likely in range of a whole bunch of basic-bitch tube artillery fuck-rape too and/or HIMARS strikes, plus they have to emit and announce themselves every time they want to do something.
                >w-well just put EW and jammers and stuff there
Cool, concentrate even more shit in a predictable narrow span of land. Emit like a Christmas tree constantly. Get a whole caravan going to set it up and supply it too. Go for it.
                >unless it's one case where you know exactly where they are supposed to be of course
lemme just set up my secret layered EW systems and AA batteries. The GLOC thought he wheat fields is secret too btw.
                >Russia has been supplying Bakhmut under a swarm of drones for how many months exactly?
22k dead 40k wounded from Wagner alone. t. Prigozhin
And that count stopped in May. Russia probably has ~100k casualties tied to that useless ruin at this point. A stunning success like that isn't in the works for Tokmak. The 70th Motorized Rifle Regiment was removed for refusing commands, and the 45th Spez got removed for probably the same reason (though we don't know that one for sure). And, unlike Tokmak, Bakhmut has right behind it has a railhead with a very nice and (compared to Tokmak) short railway from Russia that goes very snugly away from Ukrainian intervention. Tokmak doesn't have that, not even remotely similar and that's immediately obvious. Comparing their situations in terms of railways is insane.

Btw I'm not an artillery autist so I'm not fully aware of what munitions it is the ukies want to ideally use for the tokmak railway, I just remember vaguely from another thread it being about being able to repeatedly shell it with cheap munitions from a shorter range rather than occasionally damage it with expensive, longer range munitions from their current position which is not tactically viable. I would appreciate any artillery autists ITT correcting me on this if I'm wrong or clarifying what ammo/artillery gun types are in play here!

But yeah the situation seems objectively fucked for the russians
            >ukrainians are consistently pushing south in zapo
            >they will, at their current pace, be in a position to permanently disable the tokmak rail line with artillery within a month or so
            >the russians have no counter if the tokmak railway gets fucked up
Personally I'm pessimistic so I doubt the whole southern coast is getting liberated anytime before next year when the jets get to ukraine, but I don't see how this summer doesn't end with ukraine in a VERY good position in the south. How viable would continuing the offensive in winter be do we think?

The rail lines come in both directions (along the Azov north coast and via Crimea), no?

Cutting the line at a point in the middle, how does it stop the Russians pushing supplies in from either direction?

It's not about attacking Tokmak, it's about breach ling the defensive lines and creating safe corridor through minefields.
Notice how Ukraine picked up pace after being stuck in the minefields for two months.
