New EVOLYS ergos

People were wondering the other week whether the EVOLYS is still alive. Seems the answer is yes:

FN has modified the EVOLYS ultralight machine gun based on feedback from user testing.

>Buttstock: A M4 type buttstock with ergonomics familiar to many users, with adjustable length (6 positions) and adaptable cheek piece (2 heights).

>Bipod: The optional bipod has been given stronger aluminium legs and a reinforced attachment interface providing a more stable and robust support.

This is an obvious improvement and should really have been present to begin with, but a part of me cant help but be disappointed.

I hate how good of a buttstock the M4 type really is. It's not even designed with being a good general purpose buttstock to begin with! It's the spring tube from some gun in the 60's.
But as it turns out tubes are very strong and light shapes and aluminum is very strong and light as well. I just hope they'd use the empty space for storage or something.

a GPMG needs a shoulder thing that goes up.

I think the soft rubber of a normal modern butt pad negates a lot of that need.

Not really, the point of it is to hang the gun on your shoulder while you're prone so you dont have to lift it up constantly on an awkward position.

The SCAR stock has a tube inside it and has passed its drop tests.

Multiple M4 buttstocks from different manufacturers are known to shear their adjustment pins within 1 4-foot drop. Which is why the first step they recommend when mortaring your jammed AR is to collapse the buttstock before you break it.

      >le soul bros
Lol grow up, it looks cool, it would look even better in dark green, grey, or black. the design (which is made of presumably aluminum) looks this way because of the manufacturing process (which allows for massive weight savings).

No amount of le optimization can make a gun that ugly interesting

Ugly is a subjective term, look at it this way, at least it isnt an extruded plastic turd like the FN2000 or G36.

The FN2000 and G36 at least have some aesthetics to them

G36 is objectively aesthetically pleasing, especially the K variant.

I prefer 90s plastic over FN's current year polymerized plastic slop. I swear no other company has managed to make so much of their catalog look so unappealing, the stocks, the bulk, the baby poop colors, it all combines to feel both overbuilt and also flimsy at the same time.

There are rumors of a massive joint order from the french and belgian armies to replace the minimis with the Evolys

Would make perfect sense. The EVOLYS seems to have everything you'd want from a modern LMG with that long top rail and it's light weight.

      Anonymous

That would be interesting. Big move for such an untested gun though.

Noticed last week that FN publishes the left and right views of their guns in different sizes, so here's stuff made the same size for posterity.

I think the 2016 model AK-12 looks better than the prototype and the newer model with the folding stock (even if it's a shit weapon lol) but I suppose that TECHNICALLY isn't an AR stock, dimensions on the tube are different

True, but if it's solely being designed for military/SF units then I don't think their going to give a shit about the aesthetics of it like a civilian would because their chasing after individuals for purchases but contracts.

      Minimi Mk3 thread, last week
      >who care, antiquated garbage

      Evolys thread, today
      >who care, not civilian

Getting you goofballs to talk about weapons can be difficult at times.

      I care
I can still appreciate weapons I have no chance in hell of owning

I've been keeping a running index of new gun releases this year, but I've also had my hands full with a war. So like several other things, I haven't had time to figure out a good thread format to make it interesting. The first pass at doing a thread was clearly shit – I just did it [1] to have a baseline for reference. On one hand, doing a thread on a single gun is liable to recapitulate discussion from the generals. Otoh, doing a thread on a bundle of new guns is kind of odd. Bundling several new military vehicles [2] was also a non-starter. Dunno.

I never make fanboy or OPINION IN TITLE flamebait threads. I consider these to be digital trash. By my count, there are currently 5 real threads other than my own about small arms in the catalog rn, outside the generals.

I think the 5.56 Evolys suffers from being on built on the same chassis as the .308 Evolys.
It couldn't definitely be tuned to be under 10lbs and still be perfectly shootable.

You could copy the M60's layout, I guess.
Or switch to a new stock design that has the bolt reciprocate inside of it.
            No free lunch, either way.

              Anonymous

The problem of having enough space for bolt movement is a problem that has been solved over 80 years ago.
Now on the other hand this doesn't seem to be a problem here and I don't really know why the EVOLYS is so long since the feed mechanism seems to be just forwards of the trigger guard just like in almost any other non bullpup gun so there's no real reason for it to be so long.
For reference, an M4 is over four (4) inches shorter at the same barrel length.

      >7.62 (16")
      >1000m

So how do they come up with these numbers, anyway? Is it a pure asspull or there a reason they don't just claim 3-4 km range because the bullet might go that far if you shoot it off a mountainside?

Every machine gun in those calibers ever is going to have the exact same listed maximum effective range.

That's because it was originally designed as a .308 GPMG. I'd still like to know if it can take the guff of being used as a regular LMG or if it's just a boutique toy for SpecOps and SWAT teams.

      5.5kg for a 5.56 LMG is heavy.
