I assume this is based on American insight given they didn't solder a few beams to make a hood. Seems more practical than the Russian version of their caging system.

it's definitely a bit of a cope cage because it's ad-hoc out of junk, it's not like some up-armor kit purpose made for the tank

this one looks like it doesn't absolutely remove the combat effectiveness of the tank and probably just added weight

It's not slat armor because the slats need proper spacing between armor and the slat and between the slats themselves. They need to CRUSH the metal liner on a HEAT shell and turn it into HE to work. Random slats or fencing will not work as slat armor. Slat armor is SPECIFIC to the threat and the majority of slat armor ever made only deals with the RPG-7 threat, being unable to work against other HEAT warhead designs with different fuzes and liners.

It's pretty obvious the way these are mounted on the turret and the rear they're meant to protect against FPVs like Lancets, most of which don't have particularly powerful warheads.

And unlike the turtle tanks, these mods don't actually defeat the Abrams' purpose of being an MBT.

            Anonymous

Maybe it's just my 'tism but if the purpose is dealing with the shitty demo charge in the Lancet it's not using the slats like in slat armor.

Used to hate these things but seeing the sheer hideousness of Russian cages there ia a sophistication and artistry to the GWOT era slat armor i truly miss. Like even the most improvised, mismatched kits you saw on humvees and strykers is so professional looking for 2024 standards, i cant imagine what they would have thought back then seeing things now.

Still a copecage, but at least it's aesthetic and doesn't look like a bunch of orks dreamt it up

No, this isn't a cope cage no matter how often posters like you want to ignore the history behind cope cages and why the meme got so big: Vatniks tried to tell us a 2mm thick piece of sheet metal or a literal garden fence Black personrigged on top of a tank was going to stop top down attack ammuniton and rpgs, and how the West didn't had anything to counter it and how russians are ingenious for doing this. This is how the actual cope cage meme came to live.
No, don't now come with the "but it was against drones" cope, that only came up like a month or more AFTER the cope cages failed to deliver even remotely on what vatniks had claimed.

Russians put giant heavy cages on top of their roof to try and stop Javelin's.

Everyone else has been using mesh screens (since WW1) to successfully deal with grenades and single charge warheads.

  10. 4 weeks ago
    Anonymous

This isnt even slat armor, it doesnt have the required space nor rigidity to break up a warheads's shape and disrupt its cone. It doesnt even have enough space to hold extra material like dirtbags or rubble or mount ERAs, is this just so they can put camo on top?

      >reminder that the original cope cages were a hilariously pointless defense against javelins, hence 'cope'.

how do you know the original cope cages were intended against javelins? Ukraine was always going to field more $400 quad drones than $100,000 javelins, so the cope cage was always a smart idea.

now that Ukraine uses them too, you're coping about the cope cages.

        Anonymous

Lol no. Small grenade drop drones weren't a thing until later and proper HEAT drones later still. Perhaps they weren't intended for javelins, but they were definitely not intended for drones that didn't yet exist

They didn't start using them until months in, homosexual. And a hand grenade isn't doing shit anyway. The true threat is not in a lucky bounce into an unbuttoned tank, it's the HEAT warheads, which were a year or so in. You can't will a good reason for cope cages into existence

Not true. The quad drone dominance started after cages started being removed and the hatches now had a clear shot to drop any random grenade into T-series because even frag nades started fires inside the crew compartment.

Home field advantage. Probably much easier for a Ukrainian tanker to ask a local with relevant experience for help.
More self-respect and respect for the vehicle too I'd imagine. It's a gift from foreign friends, in limited quantities, to help liberate your home and hopefully keep you safer than your alternatives while you do it.

I've noticed this with a lot of ersatz modifications during this war, when the ukrainians do it, it looks semi-professional at the least, but when the russians do it, it looks below even ISIS-tier, literally african-tier

does being a simp for the west introduce some sort of appreciation for aesthetics? a sense of professionalism? competency? is it like a virus that makes you more pleasant?

I'd say it is indicative of the kind of rear line support Russian units have, that being minimal and scraped together with people who have no idea what their job is, less how to do it properly.
      >Hey Ivan, you are welder now. Get welding torch and make drone cage.
      >But comrade I don't know how to we-
      >You. Are. Welder. Now. Make the cage by tomorrow. Or shall I report to the FSB that you are refusing orders?
      >...Da, I will make drone cage.

I could also speculate that since a great majority of heavy industry manufacturing in the USSR came out of Ukraine, they brain-drained themselves the moment the union dissolved, and you simply don't gain back that kind of generational and institutional expertise in anything other than a long time, several generations. And that's assuming your economy isn't fricking dumpstered.

At the end of WW2 Shermans had grills or sandbags to stop the all too effective panzerfausts. The war ends they come off because they look ugly. The Abrams had grills in Iraq. War ends they come off. Get sent to Ukraine without them, now drones force the issue.

Future Tanks need to be designed with grills.

Placebo effect is also a thing recognized and endorsed by militaries. Even if it doesn't actually work, it makes the troops inside feel better and more able to carry out their mission.

        Anonymous

Panzerfaust defense was not a placebo. They burned Shermans really well. But even a sandbag will trigger the HEAT warhead before it gets to the armor. And generally the brass hate this stuff because it makes the tanks look ugly in the parade.

          Anonymous

          >Panzerfaust defense was not a placebo
Correct, it made them more effective as they detonate further away

          Anonymous

You think it didn't occur to the engineers to test the effects of shaped charges on tanks? If a panzerfaust shell is punching through several inches of armor plate, a log, sandbag, or toolbox is not going to stop it except maybe if it hits at a very odd angle.

In order to make the Jumbo as durable as it was, they had to weld an entire extra inch of armor on the front plate.
