    Define "eclipse".
I'm all for upgrading equipment, but in this instance - why? Do the Minuteman missiles no longer work or something? Do we really need to spend 500 billion dollars in research and refitting in order upgrade from 15,000 mph to 20,000 mph? I'm pretty sure Beijing is nuked either way, and if you're worried about "what if their missiles hit us before ours hit them", just park some submarines in the Pacific and you'll cut the time in the air by half.

What we should actually be investing in is missile defense. If we can have a global missile defense initiative and have the capacity to counter any missile launched from Russia or China, then the entire MAD scenario falls apart and all this nuclear saberattling becomes worthless.

Chinese missiles are all underground. They run the doctrine of 'we are never going to survive even if we first strike, so we're going to make sure even after everything is levelled we can still fire shit at our enemies'. So unless there are assets inside these bunkers that can blow them up from inside, they are essentially fine. Remember China wanted to invade USSR during the Sino-Soviet split and was like 'lol who the frick cares if 40 million Chinese die, just have more kids' and had to be talked out of the insanity by the USA.

So? That's not a nuclear triad, that's a nuclear cope. A bunch of our missiles are not only underground, they're also under the ocean. MAD assumes the enemy will strike back, that's the calculus of it. And China won't win a nuclear exchange under any definition of the word "win". Its major cities will be completely destroyed, it has already destroyed its agriculture in the North and fallout won't fix it, massive dams will be destroyed and flood everything, and their export economy will be over because they sell to the US and Europe - the people they just nuked.

Their entire strategy is to bully us into allowing them to take Taiwan, and we should just laugh in their face and say "do it homosexual, we have a better chance of rebuilding than you do".

Only a few nations have a triad, though some are capable of it (wish the Bongs hadn't gotten rid of the Vulcan, amazing aircraft). My point is that China has nukes for people attacking it with nukes, not for attacking with nukes, because it knows it is dead if he does it. They want Taiwan, yes, but they need a conventional army for that. They don't have the force needed to do it yet. They need their superdocks producing the craft needed for it in the hundreds a year to do it. Will they try in say 2040? I think so. Part of me thinks they will try in 2047, which is when Hong Kong stops being a separate entity and becomes part of China proper... because after the shit they did there, I suspect there will be issues and a way to stop those issues is a nice war.

            >I suspect there will be issues and a way to stop those issues is a nice war.

Sounds dumb to me. Flooding 100k+ PAP into Hong Kong is going to fix anything like that better than starting a war. Cheaper than one, too.

            >They need their superdocks producing the craft needed for it in the hundreds a year to do it.

...you seirously think they'll need to be able to produce numbers of vessels equal to the entire US Navy (as in, the USN's entire standing strength, not their shipbuilding capacity) each year to be able to invade Taiwan? Wat.

      >If we can have a global missile defense initiative and have the capacity to counter any missile launched from Russia or China

Wishful thinking. Tow major problems fundamental to it:

      1. Cost efficiency. Simply put, enough missile defense to be absolutely guaranteed to stop the ICBM is so much more expensive than building a bunch more missile silos that even the US can't afford to outspend China by enough to make it happen.

      2. Use it or lose it. Simply put, you cannot create a missile defense network big and comprehensive enough without you doing so getting detected months to years in advance. And actually trying to get it can only be seen by the Russians and Chinese in one way: As the first step towards a nuclear first strike on them, to be launched once the defenses are in place. Which means simply trying to build such a system puts them into a situation where their best option left becomes to launch their nukes first, before those defenses are in place.

Tl;dr: Don't frick with MAD. Any serious attempt is liable to trigger it instead of getting rid of it.

This is just cope. The US has nothing to gain from starting a nuclear war.

Good thing that’s not what missile defense is for

This is what he is suppose to do. Tell the US (and by extension their capable allies) that you can't rest and expect to stay ahead.

The fact that you even bothered to include fricking RUSSIAN missiles proves what a load of shit this thread is. It's just more MIC grift to get more money.

Admiral Richard is just mad his command hasn't gotten any cool toys in forever.

He's just saying this to get more funding. He already leads STRACOM, meaning he is already in the position that lets him make changes to how the US military is structured. Ironically you could also interpret this as Admiral Richard (lol) being the one responsible for supposedly sluggish state of US military preparedness he is describing.

In any case, I would rate the US response to Ukraine as exceedingly rapid, which makes me think Richard is in fact just fear mongering for more funding.

Of course. Even if it happened at snails pace. Something that gets improved is bound to overtake something stationary. Sooner or later.

Look at the difference in budget between these countries. Stare at those numbers for a while and then wonder to yourself if they’d tell each other if they could counter the others greatest weapon, or would they just wait for them to frick around and find out.
