Why is the rifle so long

It looks like an HK417, you can see the old school HK fore end with the integrated flip-up front sight, the chonky buffer-tube, the classic HK color-coded fire-selector pictograms, the OG ambi-fire-selctor switch, and the very chunky (albeit comfy to use if you're not wearing anything on your face) adjustable stock. Also, look at the size of that fricking castle-nut, very 417.

I have zero idea why NASA security personnel would be using 16 or 20 inch barreled 417s with suppressors and Aimpoints inside a NASA facility. I'd sooner recommend MP5s, MP7s/P90s, MPXs, or any other pistol caliber submachinegun or proper PDWs. THAT much ass on rounds around what I would imagine is very sensitive equipment wouldn't sit well with me, if I were a site coordinator.

It's probably for either roof stationed sentries or for helicopter use. The facilities are set up to have wide uninterrupted views around the facility to see people approaching.

The NASA police/security/swat training area is about directly below where the heli in this picture is. (At least it was back in the late 90s/early 2ks)

brass catcher - I have to assume there are a lot of places where NASA *really* doesn't want to risk leaving any FOD

Meanwhile an actual space shuttle door gunner does it just fine.

You're on fire in our store, sir. Please safety your firearm and get the frick out - you're banned. For the handguard mounted Black person tier optic and foregrip, not the safety.

      why?

Because shitty ass handguards won't hold zero, it will rotate and shift forward. There's a reason monolithic uppers exist.

why mount it forward for helo shooting?

Preference. Most of the time you see a balanced position but this is less of an issue when you will have a bungee holding up your rifle for most of the time.
You also see this with the carabiner, some shooters prefer to just use their bipod to secure their rifle to the bungee.

That suddenly makes literally every single thing about this setup make 100x more sense, thanks for clarifying, anon.

I'm the idiot anon who thought this was a larp. That jacket made it look uncredible, turns out it's a fricking HK417 and i'm regarded. I just wanted to admit this. The carabiner handguard still looks fricking gay though

I don't know about ops picture but the NASA security guys who actually do the security are almost all ex Delta. It's not secret service level war gods but they are close. They do not frick around with rocket launches.

The secret service unofficial "death squads" are the most capable warriors on the planet. No one is really close.
