Interestingly the strongest supporter of the NUG in the region is the tiny Timor-Leste. This is largely because their goverment is also largely made up of former rebels who established a democracy.

I imagine shotguns with large magazines loaded with no.1 or heavier buckshot would be pretty damn good in the short brutal ranges of jungle combat.
