        Assuming this isn't bait.

Yes a light is one of the most beneficial things to put on your new AR besides an optic. No reason to go mad expensive. Holosun would be great.

Best advice anyone can give is to shoot. Shoot. Shoot. As much as you can. Learn your rifle and how it operates. Take it apart and clean it regularly and learn to respect it as a tool. Get used to using it.

        > I feel like having a light on you just gives away your position.
Try being in the dark for about ten minutes, then have a designated friend/family members randomly shine a 500 lumen light right at you and see how readily you're able to respond to that. Please note that screaming, shielding your eyes and wondering why you see nothing but disorienting white is not an effective response.

        Anonymous

Seeing and being seen is preferable to not seeing and still probably being seen anyways. The only time you should be worried about your position being revealed is if you're the one doing the home invading.

Ammo and range time, as much as you can get. Accessories will add onto your skill but zero skill means nothing will help.
After that, a sling. Even the most basic two point sling is a good thing to have.
And then some snap caps. When you're at the range, shoot. When you're at home, run dry fire and misfire drills. Get to know your trigger and when it will break. And then when you're at the range randomly load snap caps with your actual ammo to train the flinching out, if any.
However if you're feel like it get some of the cheapest ultra-chinkshit accessories to play around with. Don't go even casually larping with them on your gun, obviously. However having something physical to hold onto and seeing how it will affect things will teach you more about you and your gun than any amount of articles of videos.
They can make the most ultimately comfortable and rugged vertical grip but it will mean nothing if you find out you just don't like vertical grips.
Once you've learned how to shoot and how you and your gun work together then start spending money on accessories or just skip to a more premium rifle.
        Anyways, have fun.

I'm assuming this isn't bait. Yes, you need a light. The Fourth rule of firearms safety is "Know your target and what's around it". And since most crimes happen at night, that means you need a light.
After all, how the hell are you going to argue that your shooting was justifiable you couldn't even see him, much less know that he had a weapon?
The light isn't there to help you shoot better. It's to help you determine if you even should shoot in the first place. And yes, you need one for home defense.

The answer is: It's beneficial when the situation to need one arises.
What are you going to do with your firearm?
Does it involve needing a weapon light?

Build your rifle to YOUR needs, not the needs of others.

He's new and probably not getting trained in proper technique, and probably shooting standing. Give him a break,be happy we have a new riflegay among us. Guide him

quick question for everyone, is the front sight easy to remove on this gun? I want to replace it with a flip up so I can use an optic and see clearer.

        >is the front sight easy to remove on this gun
No. Get an optic anyway. I suggest a plain regular red dot.
Your rifle has 2 sling loops in the usual places, same as a USGI rifle. Get a sling and attach it, adjust it, get used to it. It should be able to comfortably hold the rifle slung to your back without being so tight you can't change to a low ready easily. It should be able to partially supper the weight of the weapon when in a relaxed low ready position.

Look up rifle shooting fundamentals and practice them at the range. Congratulations on your purchase.

welcome fren. /arg/ is cancer, plz don't go there. Anything magpul makes is a safe bet. Any ammo will be fine for you right now, but once you are able to keep all your bullets inside a 6-in circle at 100 yards, you're going to want to look at different ammo types to get better accuracy. If you have a one in seven twist barrel, 75 and 77 grain rounds are probably going to shoot pretty well.

Frick man, I'm happy for you. I'm 30 and I have an AR-10 and two AR-15s, but that's got to feel so good having your own for the first time. I know it did for me. As long as you spend more on ammo and range time than you do on accessories and parts, you'll end up as a good shooter.

Thanks bro, I own guns and have experience in them but this is my first semi auto rifle. The front hand guard is magpul ( I swapped it from the factory as I heard the factory hand guard heats up really easily for this model). I changed my mind recently when I figured they are gonna start trying to restriction laws or making buyers jump through extra hoops for the gun

Is dry firing bad for AR's? I have always been taught not to dry fire guns

          Anonymous

          Yes, but also no.
Does dry firing wear out a firing pin when the force isn't being taken up by a primer? Sure. Will you ever dry fire it enough for it to matter in the long term? No. Firing pins are good for tens of thousands of rounds and if it does break, what of it? AR firing pins are a dime a dozen. Buy an extra, hell buy a dozen extra.
The story changes with older firearms which may be worn or have firing pins that are made of a different type of steel. Replacements for those may be expensive or even nonexistent.
Rimfire guns shouldn't be dry fired at all.
Regardless of the gun, its condition, and your beliefs the rule of courtesy is that if it isn't your gun don't dry fire it. Some people are okay with it, some definitely are not okay with it. Always ask, their trust in you will increase dramatically.
Speaking of, think about buying some spare consumable parts like gas rings, cam pins, etc or if you really want to you could buy a whole extra bolt carrier group as a spare in case the one you have ever has develops any issues. A bargain bin $60 BCG will save your ass when you need your gun to function and don't have time to buy spare parts, and it'll work in your basic AR you have now or the ultra-gucci rifle you may or may not end up getting later.

AR-15s don't care about dry firing. They're Private-Proofed for good reason. They cost like $5 even if you manage to frick one up. Just on a side note, never dry fire .22s or other rimfire firearms.

people are very nitpicky here but honestly an entry level gun is 80% 'as good' as a super gucci gun.
One of the big things a lot of people swap out from a gun like that is the handguard. The modern cheese grater style handguards are pretty comfy and have a lot of room to mount random junk if you like that. What do you intend to use the rifle for?

Depending on your financial situation, it'd be smart to trade the AR-15 in for an AR-10 or a BRN-180.

To simplify, the AR-10 is what the AR-15 used to be before a whole bunch of dumb shit caused it to be downsized, but the bigass bedspring and bolt carrier are meant for mitigating the recoil of far bigger bullets.

The BRN-180 is based off the AR-18, which is just what the AR-15 should've been.

  14. 2 years ago

    Well... it's a rifle, that's a start.
Get a sling, a cheap red dot on 1/3 cowitness mount, and shoot it.
Don't dump too much money on it, definitely not on stuff that can't be transfered between rifles, you're probably gonna move on at some point.

      Anonymous

      >Get a sling, a cheap red dot on 1/3 cowitness mount, and shoot it.
This is mostly good advice. However, I recommend learning how to shoot the Irons before installing anything else. OP should also get FM 3-22.9.

        Anonymous

At this point, I wouldn't bother with irons beyond zeroing his back up sights.
Arguing otherwise is neofuddery, it brings no tangible benefits, you will learn the same basics of marksmanship on a reflex sight, except faster.
        >t. used irons for nearly a decade before getting a first optic

          Anonymous

That's valid if we're talking home defense or shorter range shooting. Most people will never shoot past 300 yards anyway. But you need to know how to elevate the rifle if you're going to shoot any farther. And old school irons are the best for learning that.
Admittedly OP's MBUS knockoffs aren't good for training anyways.

            >But you need to know how to elevate the rifle if you're going to shoot any farther. And old school irons are the best for learning that.
I'm sorry but that makes no sense.
Irons suck for shooting at extended ranges, since they cover the target, unlike optics.
Sure, you can range (some) irons, but a human is neither born with an inbuilt rangefinder, nor the wits to calmly turn knobs while under fire, so eyeballing bullet drop with a red dot, or rangefinding with a moron proof reticle (ACOG) will always win over A2 style irons.

              Anonymous

              >Sure, you can range (some) irons,
That's what I'm recommending. Start with the basics, and build up. Obviously, you don't rely on Irons for actual work, but they're good practice.

I'm assuming this isn't bait. Yes, you need a light. The Fourth rule of firearms safety is "Know your target and what's around it". And since most crimes happen at night, that means you need a light.

The light isn't there to help you shoot better. It's to help you determine if you even should shoot in the first place. And yes, you need one for home defense.

Just to add to this, OP needs five items today: A sling, flashlight, red dot/optic, magazines, cleaning kit.
Don't forget to add range time for a bit of practice.
I also highly recommend a LaserLyte for drilling. Obviously make certain the firearm is cleared before home drilling.

Just to add to this, OP needs five items today: A sling, flashlight, red dot/optic, magazines, cleaning kit.
Don't forget to add range time for a bit of practice.
I also highly recommend a LaserLyte for drilling. Obviously make certain the firearm is cleared before home drilling.

      thanks

Get a sling, light and optic. The best entry level optic is gonna be the Sig Sauer romeo5, you can find it for around $100. They also have the Sig Sauer MSR for around $70.

Aside from that, get ammo and go shoot the damn thing.

unironically bought 2 from amazon. just have to watch out for fakes. there are threads about it on ar15.com. actually after looking they're around 125 there, mine were both 99.99 in like may. midwayusa and primary arms will have good deals sometimes, and usually have quick shipping.

Can confirm, primary arms sold them for a flash sale earlier this year for $75, $99 seems to be the regular sale price.
Definitely wait for a holiday sale.

based anon, I bought the same a year ago!
mine has shot around 1k rds with only one stovepipe, so I've had great success. put a light on it and a red dot. practice using the irons with the red dot off every now and then, being good with irons makes you a better shooter. get a sling as well.
