I don't think I'd want a .308 to hunt elephants. I don't care if it's more than capable of doing it. I know it is. I'd just feel infinitely more confident with something that has muzzle energy in the 4000s.

What about being able to fire rapidly? What if there are two elephants? Two tigers?

Mag dumping the thing's legs on full-auto until they bleed to death is not what I'd call an ethical strategy.

There is no way to "ethically" kill an elephant or rhino.

I think the way you just infactually described native African hunters, is disgusting. It’s morally corrupt and makes me want to vomit. You need to check your whiteness

I've been hit with 5.56 three times dead in the chest. I was in Fallujah and I killed about 16 insurgents before I had to pop in a fresh mag, but a sniper took out my left knee and I collapsed during the reload. Well, needless to say, I was out of action. A bunch of other insurgents started swarming to my location, so I pulled out my KABAR and shanked one of those dirty sand Black folk right in the throat, but while this was happening some other Hadji got ahold of my AUG and the fresh mag that I dropped when the sniper nailed me. He loaded it up and tagged me twice in the right lung before I pulled out my Deagle and returned fire as he was squeezing off a third shot. My .50 slug obliterated his gray matter and his third round pierced my left ventricle. Most people would have died, but I just did the mash, I did the monster mash.

Hunting is not combat, it is supposed to be done with something that can reliably and humanely kill in one shot, and leave a large enough blood trail to track and not lose the game after wounding it.
Losing wounded game is the most dishonorable and pathetic outcome a hunter can have.

Big game hunting often done by some fat rich guy that basicly has a guide do everything, position them and then lets the rich guy pull the trigger and think they accomplished something.
This hunter has little understanding of the outdoors, animal behavior, and is just making a basic shot someone else maneuvered and positioned him for. The guide is also armed and ready to compensate for the failure of the wallstreet desk jockey.

Most nations do not like normal people, and especialy foriegn civilians, with firearms good for fighting. They want low capacity non semiauto firearms.
Game wardens and nature preserve caretakers are often outgunned by poachers because of restrictions, and they are in country and given more options than foriegners.

Forgot to add, the real drive for Big game hunting is the dangerous game that is apart of the big game family.
Hippos are very territorial and will tear you apart, you need a lot of Whoppen Stoppen power when get some water and a Hippo says "you chose death".
Also, I can't remember where I read this. But old Rinos need to be culled from time to time so the young Rinos have a chance at mating. Can't have too much inbreeding. You really want a 308 when you shot a old Rino? especially when it charges you.

    >Boomers insist .223 isn't enough to hunt deer
Meanwhile, if I had a nickel for every time someone has killed an elephant with .22lr, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's enough to buy 5 rounds of .22lr.

Obviously Botswana is a rich and successful african nation so they have AR platform rifles now but back in the day when they had G3s and FALs and couldn't find a US dentist to buy the kill they'd just rock up to problem elephants and drop them with 7.62 NATO ball ammo.

Yeah elephants are pest sometimes I'm sure there's various ways they've been killed that doesn't mean it's the most humans hunting method

These are the people who figured out terrs don't always go down with 308 I don't see how they'd decide to use it for elephants

There are a number of reasons African guides wanted big double bores.
-large calibre low pressure solids stay together penetrating thick skulls and hides of big dangerous wounded charging animals at close range
-no quicker followup shot than a double
-in close range charges you really don't have time for much more than two shots
Don't take it from me, read about actual African guides.
As for the actual hunting, many do use .308. Semiautomatic battle rifles have never been a practical choice due to accuracy and the simplicity and safety of a good bolt gun. But battle rifles have been used and I say go for it.

      >7.62x39
      >Tumbles for almost a meter
How is this not sufficient? These beasts also rush you down head first, I'm sure the rhinos or hippos poached like this didn't suffer for long
