MREs are unnecessary modern commodities

They exist solely to appease newer generations of soldiers, who grew up eating multiple hot meals a day. Rye bread, liver spread and canned tuna are sufficent as field rations, from a nutrional perspective.

Eat your Dead and Enemies, Anons. As long theres reinforcement and enemies, a meal is probably just a genade throw away. Or you could akways keep a few POWs alive, well at least 3days.

it would be, you can feel the dud heaters are different. my great grandfather thought MREs are up there with the model T, the airplane and the NES as great inventions of the 20th century. he died in the 90s but he loved some MREs and got such a kick out of the heater and ROCK OR SOMETHING.

Yeah, that would fit. Bad packaging can cause chemical heaters to go off early. If they're anything like disposable hand warmers they'd be stiff and heavy.

You wouldn't even save much money. MREs don't cost the government much per unit because they've been mass producing them forever and it's just freeze dried food in cheap paper and plastic. Even after all this inflation I doubt they're paying the vendor even $10 per meal.

You're going to save like $6 a meal on the vendor side from the cheap ingredients and less packaging and no heater. But it will still cost you nearly as much because most of the actual "internal cost" comes from paying for shipping, storage, etc which isn't any cheaper for rye bread and tuna. (Even worse if you're imagining buying from Walmart and getting food packaged for ordinary handling on room temperature shelves.)

If you were this cheap with all food budgets and allotments of every kind for all active duty personnel you might save 0.5% of the defense budget. Sure an army marches on its stomach and food is one of the most basic motivations of any organism, but nut nutrition labels don't lie, hardtack and deenz are the way.

      >MRE

The RE stands for Ready to Eat. The whole point of the product is to be edible straight out of the bag with no prep. The instant coffess and beverage powders are the exception, not the rule.

        Anonymous

You're right, I don't know why I went with that word. The mains are essentially canned food in a flexible can.

Which again means there's hardly any cost advantage between an ordinary can of Starkist and MENU 69, TUNA BREAD except that OP wants to leave out a $1 flameless heater.
