Im starting to think this is the hill the AFU will die, despite the mass casualties they keep sending badly trained and equipped troops to bakhmut, some mobilized 7 days ago and sent directly to the front

      Ukraininan “Insider”

After the scandalous publications in the West about the heavy losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the huge military cemeteries in Ukraine, they want to change the method of burying dead soldiers. The Office of the President demanded that the General Staff initiate a decentralized method of burying the dead military, such an initiative should come from relatives, and bodies without identification should be buried in closed areas for further identification. In this way, politicians want to limit the growth of military graves, which, with their scale, have begun to frighten Ukrainians and Western experts.

This. Russia will probably lose a million before Ukraine even breaks 50,000 losses. Bakhmut has been a very good situation for Ukraine. If they are leaving now it’s only because they can kill even more vatnik elsewhere.

Casualties are roughly the same. Russia at 180k and Ukraine at 130k. Did you think it was 180k dead Russians? Either way, Ukraine is in its 6th mobilisation for a reason.

                >Either way, Ukraine is in its 6th mobilisation for a reason
Because they have a hard cap on how much people they can put through the pipeline? It was Russia who tried to mobilize 300k at once, and that lead to mobiks being sent to absolute shithouses, some to empty fields.

Neutral observers are all saying around 130k for Ukraine and 180k for Russia. Even the Pentagon last month said 120k (General Milley) but they dismiss it now because it wasn't an official announcement. Ukraine is fricked they have 1/5th of Russia's mobilisation ability.

Russia has incentives to understate their lost, because they are sending men to die for aggression. Outside sources like the pentagon have incentive to overstate Ukraine losses because it justifies sending more support. This means Ukraine didn’t really lose 100,000, and Russia lost much more than they. Ukraine has their official numbers are reported, even. If you believe those numbers saying Ukraine lost 100,000 at face value (hint: you Black folk can’t decide if it is even killed or wounded) it just makes you look dumb and no one else.

Even if this is true, Russia has a critical problem with recovering wounded. Especially since they're on the attacking side, there are few to no opportunities to recover those men, they are dead. The defender will rack up many times more wounded than killed.

I can believe 120k-130k casualties for Ukraine. But Russia can easily be having 200k casualties. 180k sounds like the lowest possible estimate while a Ukraine rate of 120k-150k sounds more accurate by comparison. These counts aren't just of the 190k troops the Russians had on the first day, a good 50-60k of those troops being the separatists. It's also all the new troops raised after the invasion. If anything, Russia having 200k+ casualties is low given they likely have had more than 350k-400k troops in total from February to now in Ukraine at this point.

May I ask for some links to corroborate this? I'm not saying that the numbers sound completely unbelievable, but I'd be surprised that "neutral observers are all saying" the exact same thing.
The numbers I've seen from different sources have a pretty broad spread, and I'm curious to the identity of these "neutral observers", since pretty much every country seems to prefer one side over the other.

                >Russian casualties are over half a million
You can't be that naive. Every reasonable person wants Ukraine to win, but this level of cope has become quite annoying. Take the rose tinted glasses for a second and discuss this war with at least a side glance at reality.

200k troops used for the initial invasion +300k mobilised; all gone? All casualties? And keep in mind that this is an artillery war; wounded soldiers very often don't enter the hospital with severe wounds or missing limbs, it's not like wounded soldiers are back on the field a week later.

The number of Russian casualties stated by Ukraine is vastly overinflated. The reality is that the number of casualties for both sides is way too close for Ukraine's comfort. The bet was that Bakhmut would change that, and it likely did push things a bit more in Ukraine's favor, but we still don't know how much of a difference it made

                >200k troops
                >300k mobilised
If you're just counting Russian military troops, then yes, those numbers are inflated. But given that Russia has been shoving Wagner, DPR and LPR forces into the fray, they could easily constitute a significant fraction of that figure. Quite a few Chechens have been lost too at this point.

                >Wagner
                >DPR, LPR
                >Chechens
Not enough of them to make the 500k number realistic (600k) if you go by what minusrus states. Especially the Chechens, they barely see any combat.

Wagner, according to US officials suffered 30k casualties. Even if Wagner was completely wiped out, that would still be 50-60k casualties.

Let's say that LPR and DPR represent another 60k. There are still around 400k Russian casualties. 4/5 of the invasion force + mobiks.

Who is Ukraine fighting? With what soldiers is Russia occupying Donbas and the eastern side of the Kherson oblast? How did they take Soledar?

The Telegraph article claims Russian casualties are also above 120,000, but it doesn't claim which side has suffered more.
The Norwegian source puts Russian casualties at 180,000+, so significantly higher than Ukraine's but a bit short of the 10:1 meme. Unless their dead to wounded ratio is much higher.

It's illegal not to show up but literally no one is forced into the army. So many people want to join that they turn away anyone with ADHD, slightly under average eyesight, old sports injuries e.t.c.
They don't want demoralized troops that don't want to be there so if you say "I don't really want to do this" they won't take you.

that's where you're wrong. it's more like 1.5 according to the new york times

    >They got some firearms training — for one and a half days, Mr. Bilous said. Then they deployed to a pine forest near the city of Sievierodonetsk where they were supposed to be the second or even third line of defense, the unit’s commander, Capt. Volodymyr Kanchuk, said. With so many professional soldiers killed, they were pushed all the way forward to what is called the “zero line.”

In this way, politicians want to limit the growth of military graves, which, with their scale, have begun to frighten Ukrainians and Western experts.

ukraine has been rotating troops in and out of bakhmut on an almost week basis for months now. i'm not really sure if the reason is a trial by fire, to reduce the load any particular unit has to bear, or simply because units' capacity is too degraded after a couple weeks to keep them there. anyway this is probably what the reinforcements are.

      Anonymous

Dude. 2 weeks of intense combat is exhausting you want to rotate troops out of such if possible.

        Anonymous

i understand that logic but it's not always correct. doctors and nurses in emergency rooms will often work 12, 14, 16 hour shifts back to back. isn't that exhausting? wouldn't it make patient care worse? actually, no, they've experimented with shorter shifts and it always hurts patient care because no one ever learns what's going on in their case. defending trenches can be the same way, eventually people will truly become useless ("thousand yard stare" types) but not in a week or two.

Wrong, they haven't been rotating troops out to the rear. The rotations have been happening inside Bakhmut, from combat to support roles.

not what i heard, i've heard of people going from bakhmut to kherson or the belarus border, but i suppose my sources could be bullshitting me.

      >told me that Bakhmut had no strategic significance
It doesn't. Nowhere it says it does. Strategic decision and strategic significance are different things.
Strategic significance means that loosing it would endanger whole region, which is it not.
Strategic decision means that russians are so eager to take it that they hamper their advancements along all the frontline, which means that to keep holding it would majorly frick over russians on itself, which is incredibly advantageous quality for defensive position.

        >which means that to keep holding it would majorly frick over russians on itself
So allowing large portion of your army to get encircled in a place with "no strategic significance" is incredibly advantegeous for your position. Can you refer to some specific strategist or a particular military doctrine that explains this strategic approach in more detail. Clauzewitz, perhaps?

There are some flaws in your premise that make this reasoning suspect
In order for Ukrainian forces at Bakhmut to be encircled the Russians would need some means of actually encircling them and since they have been trying to do just for more than seven months without success it seems pretty clear that they do not in fact possess such a capability

I see, so we have to somewhat diverging doctrines here:

            a) The entire brigades trapped at Bakhmut amount to just 5000 men in total, and frick those guys anyway. No, we're not going to evacuate them like what the vatnik orcs did in Kherson, we're going to have them all get surrounded and killed because big brain strategic decision and genius advantageous position. In fact, lets reinforce those them and turn decisive defeat into unmitigated disaster of our own making.

            b) Pfff. No, the Russians aren't encircling Bakhmut. I guess they surround it on three directions and have fire control over the only road out of it, but it doesn't mean they're close to encircling it, okay? Mkay.

              >we're not going to evacuate them like what the vatnik orcs did in Kherson
The Ukrainians were far away enough from Kherson city that it was possible for them to cross unopposed for weeks.
When Russians retreated from towns threatened with encirclement by Ukraine, the Ukies had the artillery pre-sighted on the escape routes. Do not compare a retreat under fire to the relatively calm Kherson withdrawl, which was only shelled on the very last day.

What the frick are you talking about.
The first guy pointed out that there are only 5k people in Bakhmut. He never said that the Ukrainians wouldn't evacuate them if they came under threat of being encircled. In fact, he said nothing about the possibility of encirclement at all
The second guy said Russia's failure to encircle Bakhmut in the past 8 months means they probably aren't capable of it.
There's no "diverging" here except in your krokodil-addled head.

Ukraine's army is at zero risk of an encirclement right now. If it is at risk of encirclement they will probably pull out like they did in the Donbass sieges early in the war.
Ukraine bloodying the Russian army in those sieges before ultimately withdrawing is largely what enabled the Kharkiv counteroffensive. The Russian military cannot replace losses quickly enough. This is not the era of the great patriotic war, quality modern soldiers require an insane investment in time and resources and Russia expended most of their best men in the opening days of the war pursuing unachievable objectives. The survival rates of mobiks are horrendous so the bloodying of the Russian army isn't even producing meaningful veterancy.

Fighting in Bahkmut is a strategic decision, because the Ukrainians are inflicting unequal casualties on one of the greatest concentrations of orcs in their territory, and because not fighting in Bahkmut would free up Russian resources to be used elsewhere where they are more threatening to Ukrainian goals.
Even if the AFU wasn't inflicting lopsided losses on the Russians in Bahkmut (they are), forcing the Russians to commit excess combat power to that theater to accomplish their goals frees up Ukrainian combat power for other theaters. This effect is maximized when Ukraine commits just enough force to cause Russia to take months to advance meter by meter.

I got a strong feeling they're going to keep holding it till they actually get put under siege in which case they'll hold it till they can send in a relief force to open up a corridor to retreat or push it back to square 1. The idea behind all this would be to just cause as much damage to the Russians as possible.

And they either manage to retake control over the roads to the town and gonna be able to hold town itself for many more months and everything cool, OR they fail to do so, waste precious manpower and would be forced to retreat from the yown under fire over a muddy road anyway.
Town of Bakhmut itself can hold for very long without problem, ruskies won't assault it directly anyway as they have severe ptsd after Mariupol and SD, but supply routes to the town are weak points and that's sucks.

I would agree this is it for Ukraine if the opposing army was anyone but the RuAF and separatists. if the war was going well for Ukraine NATO wouldn't be in such a rush to send weapons that could escalate things after hesitating to do so for over a year. And China wouldn't suddenly be in a rush to back a loser after staying neutral for so long. the US wouldn't be seething over China potentially sending lethal aid if Russia was about to collapse and China wouldn't bother for the same reason

      Anonymous

Ukraine is in a tough spot right now when to comes to casualties to manpower ratio. But I wouldn't say that they are losing, I'd say they are in a critical moment and they must play their hand very intelligently to have a good chance at a successful offensive. This not the moment to make moves motivated by political image, trying to hold onto Soledar was already a bad move, they have to be smart with their plans in Bakhmut.

The US did make threats to China in the beginning of the war an throughout it, it is nothing new, China has already helped Russia with non-lethal aid and with the economic sanctions. Sending weapons would be an escalation of their support for Russia, not a departure from neutrality

Bakhmut overall has been an absolute blessing for Ukies. They got a shooting gallery of vatniks to freely shred for fun for fricking 7 months. You need a 3 to 1 advantage to win if you're on the offensive side, and that's considering both sides are at least somewhat equal. These are not equal sides. Ukies had training, equipment, intel, accurate arty, better positions. Vatniks had rusty AKs if they were lucky, constant rape, constant vodka, no winter gear, were treated like cannon fodder, stormed heavily fortified positions through open fields. All for 7 months. A 10:1 KDR in Ukie favor is just the starting point, it can easily be much higher. Bakhmut is not fricking Berlin. It's a fricking 70k pre war pop town. I don't understand why you Black folk keep saying "it's an x size city anyway" this isn't a strategy game, no city in Ukraine is "strategically important" they get their weapons from foreign countries and they already conscripted everyone they could conscript, I guess you could say some cities have symbolic value like Kharkiv or administrative like Kiev but it's not like Ukraine is pumping weapons out of cities and sitting on available manpower, every city in Ukraine right now has nothing but babushkas and essential workers, everyone else is in the army or in the EU
Cities in this war have geographical value only and Bakhmut and it's surrounding villages was a fortress of hills, commie blocks and prewar dug up positions and it's necessary to take it to assault the next city which is the last line of defence in the dombass

Russia has demonstrated it will kill as many of its own people as is necessary, no matter the cost. If a million Russians need to die, then they'll enter martial law, suspend courts and conscript anyone not necessary to the function of the state apparatus. I honestly would not be surprised if, after the penal battalions are thinned out, they take inspiration from history and start sending graduating high school boys to the front as their mandatory service. You can't win a war of attrition with a country that doesn't care about casualties and requires only punitive rape, beatings and vodka for morale.

        Anonymous

Russia only has three times as many people as Ukraine. Casualty ratios are at two to one, and should be getting better for Ukraine as the West gives them more modern equipment in the next year. The idea behind attrition isn't jusf forcing Russia to give up, it's slaughtering all of them if they don't.

      Anonymous

The Russians have lost a lot more than twice as many. My lowest estimates for this battle are 1k dead on Ukrainians and 10k dead on Russians and that's just the lowest. They wanted a Khe Sanh like situation, they're getting a Khe Sanh like casualty rate.

I'm willing to bet the Ukrainians aren't planning on retreating but holding it even as the city is put under actual siege. Then if they get overrun they explode the fortress city with everything and everyone they got possibly including planes as a relief force is sent to punch their way to Bakhmut to rescue survivors. They may even stay there afterwards.

So, is Bakhmut important or isn’t it? Ukraine shills have been playing both sides, and I don’t pay attention to the war. What’s the party line right now?

      Anonymous

The city isn't strategically important but cities are good defensive terrain so when you're on the defense holding them for as long as possible is a sound and time tested tactic to inflict high casualties and buy time. Maybe if you weren't a total moron/shitposter you could grasp the basics.

        Anonymous

Okay, so the loss of Bakhmut shouldn’t impinge on Ukraine’s strategic situation going forward as its usefulness as a casualty sink is exhausted. This assumes that Ukraine hasn’t suffered severe casualties from holding the city, of course, which despite what is plastered all over this shithole of a board, is not a given. I guess we’ll see how it turns out going forward, Black person.

          Anonymous

          >what is plastered all over this shithole of a board, is not a given
Again if you had more than two braincells to rub together you could actually figure this out for yourself but I'll hold your hand. Sure no one is 100% sure of the exact casualty numbers. But again using basic logic, attackers usually lose more men than defenders. Especially when attacking a city with tons of defensive emplacements, a city that still isn't totally encircled after half a year under siege. You could mitigate this with better tech or training but we know Russians don't have really have an edge there. We also know for a fact that Russia is using fresh conscripts and literal human wave tactics using prison battalions. So all the evidence points to higher Russian casualties. Sure with the fog of war theoretically the Ukrainians could have higher casualties but theoretically you could be a Havard graduate but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

            Anonymous

The Ukrainians don’t merely have to have fewer causalities, moron. If as you’ve suggested they’re using the city as a meat grinder they need to hit whatever favorable ratio they need given the manpower disparity — not simply “more.” And that’s not a given, as I said. All of your logic works back from what you take for granted, which is the competence of the Ukrainians and the surety of the intel we have. You may yet be right, but you’re far too moronic and your logic is way too self serving to be this smug about it.

You made up a hypothetical scenario based on strawmen. You certainly didn't post any "facts". Keep fighting the mean evil /k/ hypocrites who keep "attacking" you for being soooo brave and correct.

                >Hypothetical scenario
Is this your first time on /k/? When people here started posting unverified claims last year from UMD about Russia sending untrained mobiks without proper weapons and ammo, people here were cumming all over themselves. Now, the same unverified claim is made about Ukraine and suddenly it's the end of the world. All while both claims remain unverified and most likely a bullshit spread for propaganda reasons. Are you so braindead that you can't see that BOTH sides are spewing bullshit left and right?

                Anonymous

/k/ is not one person. Taking posts from a year ago and comparing them to posts being made now and acting like it's proof of hypocrisy is moronic. The idea that it's the same posters is purely hypothetical. If it isn't the same posters it by definition isn't hypocrisy. You effectively made a strawman to make yourself look smart and superior. Which imo is sad which is why I made fun of you.
                > you so braindead that you can't see that BOTH sides are spewing bullshit left and right?
Pointing out there's dumb people and propaganda on both sides is extremely obvious to everyone worth a shit. Apply yourself.

                >/k/ is not one person
Where did I imply that /k/ is one person and that all of these posts are made by one person? Last year was when these claims started, and these claims are still being posted and referred to even now, therefore the relevancy stays the same.
                >Creating own headcanon about my post motivation
Once again you are speculating about my motivation and wrongly assuming I did it to feel smart and superior. My main motivation was to call out the hypocrites taking the same claims instead of immediately dismissing them as fabricated bullshit, accepting it and celebrating it from one side and completely rejecting it from the other. That's it. That's the motivation. If you see anything else behind it, then that's your own headcanon.

Bakhmut is the center axis of which this war revolves. Once Ukrainian forces withdraw it is understood by Russia and NATO the war will be over. It is why Putin is currently negotiating nuclear treaties from a position of power. The drone strikes on Russian soil are nothing but a cornered animal lashing out in fear. They have a few weeks worth of drones left tops.

There are many reasons for the current zigger fallout, but the excessive focus on casualties and conscription is not a coincidence.
One of the fresh scandals in Russia is the excessive casualties of 2 batallions of mobilized from Irkutsk after they repeatedly wrote home about the "lawless and criminal orders of high command". The governor of Irkutsk promissed on 26.02 to "transfer the fellows to a new place" - instead early today (01.03) they were ordered to participate in a fresh assault towards Avdeevka.

Nah, they chose this path. They were invited to the Partners of Peace program in the 90s, the Russians continued to sperg out about not being allowed into NATO just because they asked nicely (and didn't want to spend time going through the official process on the grounds of "we're special") then made a habit of just randomly invading their neighbors.

Sorry, we don't need that kind of "partner" in Europe, and frankly if they are performing this poorly against a nation whose gear they helped design I think them fighting in a war against China would have been a detriment for us. Ironically China is probably thinking the same thing about Russia now.

I find the people who lost Afghanistan in a week are not in a place to judge a 21st century conventional war
As well as ignoring all of Russia’s security concerns was something notorious during those times so why did you leave that part out? In fact it was surprising we even acknowledged Chechnya as terrorist but that was only because of Islam being in the crosshairs of globohomosexual
