Monkey Model Myth was already busted back in 1970

?t=69
It's funny to think that so many recent years have passed where the idea that Arab armies shat the bed because
>Arabs can't fight
>they were only kitted with export ("monkey") models of mighty Soviet gear
was treated as a feasible, acceptable position.

Being fair, the Israelis did commit several veteran ace pilots while the Soviets reportedly had rather green pilots. Are there any confirmed instances where 70s-era Soviet jets in the hands of experienced Soviet pilots out-performed equally experienced pilots in US/NATO jets?
>Instances from Vietnam and Korea are very acceptable

The Soviets fell for the same trick that the Egyptians did. Swap the planes and the result is the same

The Soviets fell for a trick the Egyptians had already fallen for, but were by then prepared to deal with.

I can't remember the name of the fight, but a Soviet ace shot down a South Korean (US backed) air force transport with over two-hundred (200) paratroopers on board. The SK and US governments tried to hide this incident so it's hard to find

Soviets pilots were not green. they were hand picked and got and additionally trained and had combat simulations before going to Egypt.
They had no kill score of course (unlike IDF pilots) but those soviets got training as good as soviets could provide during peace time.

This particular incident always cracked me up and was very illuminating for future patterns of behavior
Imagine just massively losing a battle and telling everyone you won anyway, why didn't the Axis think of this

This is the downfall of authoritarianism. Everything is a victory regardless of the facts on the ground so nothing needs to change, nothing needs to be fixed... you can just lie. We hear about all sorts of problems with the US military it's either in the context of them fixing them or in outcry which leads to the fix. It's publicly embarrassing but nowhere as embarrassing as taking hundreds of thousands of casualties and losing thousands of armored vehicles to Ukraine. Don't worry though, when this is all over they will lie about fixing it.

"The simplicity of Soviet weapons surprises everyone. But each type of equipment which is produced is turned out in two variants-the normal one and the `monkey-model'."

"The `monkey-model' is a weapon which has been simplified in every conceivable way and which is intended for production in wartime only."

"For instance, the T-62 tank is one of the simplest fighting vehicles in the world. But as it was being designed, a still simpler version was also being developed, for wartime use. The `monkey-model' of the T-62 does not have a stabilised gun, carries simplified radio and optical equipment, the night-vision equipment uses an infra-red light source to illuminate targets (a method which is twenty years old), the gun is raised and turned manually, steel rather than wolfram or uranium is used for the armour-plating piercing caps of its shells."

"I have seen two variants of the BMP-1 infantry combat vehicle-one which is issued to the Soviet army and another which is intended for the Soviet Union's Arab friends. I counted sixty-three simplifications which made the second `monkey-model' different from the original version. Among the most important of these were: The 73mm gun has no loading or round selection equipment. Whereas in the Soviet version the gunnerjust presses the appropriate buttons and the round which he requires slides into the barrel, in the simplified model all of this has to be done by hand, and furthermore, the gun is not stabilised. The turret is rotated and the gun is raised mechanically. In the Soviet version this is done electrically-the mechanical system is there only as a back-up. "

What he said about the BMP-1 wasn't wrong. The Soviet version had an autoloader which was deleted on Warsaw Pact produced models. The Warsaw Pact version of the T-72 also has a simplified armor package as well.

I never said either of these things were necessarily false, anon. Only that it being the reason for the poor performance of Russian equipment was always wrong.
