Modern chainmail

How would you design a modern chainmail to protect the torso from hobo stabs?
confort is the priority since it needs to be a daily wear , it needs to adapt to modern clothes so no medieval shit please, we got modern methalurgy and materials now i am sure we can get a really neat design with modern techniques

I know that pro stabbers go for the neck and can kill in 1 second but this is for commercial purposes not to defend yourself from a trained hitman

    >it needs to adapt to modern clothes so no medieval shit please
Medieval mail wasn't made to fit medieval clothe,s it was made to fit the human body. You know, so you could move in it. And if at all possible the preferred to have it quite tightly fitted, since that means less material and thus less weight. Clothes worn with this would adapt to the armour, either also being tightly fitted (while still allowing proper mobility of course) if they were to be worn underneath, just the minimum of padding you felt was strictly necessary, or worn on top of the mail. So yeah, you can either have something excessively heavy that restricts your range of motion by virtue of not fitting you properly, or you can essentially have it medieval style.

    >we got modern methalurgy and materials now
We have better steel. Use that and you get better mail. I guess stainless would be more or less necessary since people aren't gonna bother caring much for it regardless, even if that means we can't chose a steel grade purely optimised for protection. Perhaps titanium would be worthwhile here, if you can afford it, since it's "soft" armour anyway and so the low stiffness doesn't add any extra issues, but the cost's gonna be quite something. Plain old quality control will be really important for performance, since the welding you use to close up the rings can easily be a weak spot.
Sew it to a few layers cut-resistant and breathing fabric for padding on the inside, comfort layer at the innermost, and then one or a few reasonably fashion-friendly layer on the outside as well. Helps reduce noise and tangles up the narrow points that mail struggles with, while the mail itself deals with the sharp edges that the fabric would struggle with. Once again, "medieval style", though in some regions and times the garments usually weren't stitched together into one like that. But people wouldn't know what shit to wear in what order, so...

You just assume normal chainmail wouldn't work for no reason because "it's not designed for modern clothes".
    That's lame.

Chainmail is shit for stabs, it stops slashes. In fact the broken rings can get imbedded into you when u get poked. Come on op, be better.
Just get a thick leather jacket or a padded coat and it should be good enough protection against hobo shanks. Or man up and buy some plate or something

The issue is expense and weaving. You can buy tempered riveted maille shirts, theyre fricking $800.

Chain mail is literally used to counter shark bites, so it can easily be surmised that it can stop a knife being held by a simple man

rings can be pretty thin because you can weld them.

I grew up pretty sheltered and looked for hobbies to keep busy. Made three hauberks throughout middle school. I made my first one from 14g galvanized steel. That one can get really tiring to wear especially without a belt to help distribute the weight. I wore it from time to time when it was still in its shirt to semi gown stage while I worked on it. Goes underneath clothes just fine, but if the ring gaps aren't riveted or welded then it can snag on threads in your clothes. Galvanized steel also makes you smell of zinc once it's been on your body for a while. Stainless steel felt like butter when I worked on the other ones using it. I gave spring tempered titanium wire a shot as well. Wasn't very ductile so was difficult to work with too.

I would suggest a jacket with mail woven into it that way it could be easily taken on and off and concealed and also provide a sort of 2 in 1 of chainmail and gambeson.
However, it would likely restrict movement more than just wearing mail over a shirt and under a jacket.

That's definitely interesting, you'd want something that covers the wrists, hangs down to the thighs, and has a collar you can flip up to cover the neck, although I think a trenchcoat would be a tad too much.

Chainmail is definitely interesting, but aren't there a fair few other synthetic or natural fibres that can accomplish the same task with a tenth the weight. Kevlar or silk,as far as I remember, can do serviceable jobs at stopping slashing and stabbing attacks.

Kevlar and silk are famously less effective against stabbing and hold in heat a lot more.
