They launched one, didn’t work. So they used CIWS. Ship untouched. Mission accomplished. U.S military hardware isn’t invincible wunderwaffe shit. People act some American hardware wouldn’t be destroyed in the event of a peer conflict. Houthis aren’t what you would consider a real threat but a victory for them is one hit. Even if they fire 100 missiles and ALL of them are destroyed. So far, NOTHING has even gotten close. Just 1 missile shot down by CIWS.

This. All systems to intercept ram threats have a rate of failure. Layered defense did its job anyway. The US isn't that advanced in short range missile defense to begin with.

      >U.S military hardware isn’t invincible wunderwaffe shit. People act some American hardware wouldn’t be destroyed in the event of a peer conflict.

In jingos minds it is invincible. Hence all the moronic "hurr just bomb the Three Gorges Dam," posts.

The reality is that having to fight in China's littoral against their tsunami of missile spam is absolutely not an easy mission. If it ever seems clear that we have to fight them the play is to fight anywhere else lol. Their blue water navy capabilities are still quite weak, but engaging around Taiwan is going to mean US fighters are getting shot down and ships are eventually getting hit.

The right play is to make sure that never happens by having a strong deterrent and good diplomacy.

No amount of missiles slung is going to unbreak the dam if it gets capped, while the Chinese littoral fleet remain sitting ducks against US submarines and carriers.

Destroyers are an obsolete class of vessel being lobbied by geriatric admirals that think direct fire surface combatants are somehow less vulnerable if you make them cheaper and flimsier. Anything that could destroy a BB, be it a fighter squadron, a torpedo, or missile spam would do the same to an Arleigh Burke.

CIWS however is meant to be the last -ditch line of defense however, so they really should study how it got that far. You don't want to rely on CIWS. It's a big deal, with big implications, even if nothing happened this time.

        >CIWS however is meant to be the last -ditch line of defense however, so they really should study how it got that far.
Sure. But what indication do you have that the Navy *isn't* going to do an after action review of the engagement? Both to figure out what caused the failed interception, and what can be done to try to mitigate that risk in the future? Keep in mind the Navy also now has real world combat data for the Phalanx intercepting an anti-ship missile. They can go over that as well to determine if there can be any improvements to the CWIS to make it a more effective final line of defense for US warships.

Obviously there's always room to improve. But the jist of the story is "multi-layered defenses on US Warship was effective".

The double-standard applied to the U.S. never ceases to amaze me.

I legitimately baffles me that you have people excuse the failure train that happened with the Moskva

        >Ship sensors and crew failed to detect the incoming anti-ship missile attack
        >Long range and short range SAM's fail to engage
        >CWIS fails to engage

Who started the meme that CIWS was useless, just a desperate last-ditch attempt to save the ship, the sound of it was the alarm for the crew to bail?

I think the bigger concern is that we keep letting them shoot at us without really doing anything about it. They only have to get lucky once.

The correct answer is to seize or sink the Iranian ships that are blatantly providing targeting information for the Houthis, and threaten to blockade Iranian oil tankers leaving the Persian Gulf... but that's extremely unlikely with the current Administration and all of its pro-Iran Obama holdovers. So, instead we'll sit there and get shot at until something happens.
