Militarization of Space

The DoD wants to use Starship for 1 hr earth to earth delivery

How else could Starship be militarized by the Space Force/DoD?

Starship is really more of a means to an end, that being cheap large scale orbital structures.
Think affordable military space stations alongside some sort of ODST style drop system.
Although we don't want Kessler syndrome.

Fill it with US paratroopers on a glider. Or bombs.

Space supremacy with Mk41 VLS cells and a big boy chemical laser

Yes tactical length Mk41 cells fit, I've checked

I bet they'd run mostly SM3 alongside a few SM2/6s reconfigured for exoatmospheric maneuvering

Yeah I feel like Starship could send up satellites with a 1 or 2 module Mk 41 VLS (8-16 cells) with an attached satellite bus for orientation, station keeping, communications, and solar panels for power generation.

Placed in a mid-orbit constellation above LEO and below GEO would give them the capability to strike ICBMs in their ascent or midcourse phase, AND even potentially be used to take out enemy GEO satellites in higher orbits that current ground-based missiles can't hit.

I'm not saying it would just send a single satellite at a time, just you probably wouldn't really want more than 8-16 VLS cells on any single satellite.

    Rods from god

Here is the problem with Rods from God, you're almost certainly familiar with the saying,
      >What goes up, must come down
Well this works the other way too. When taking stuff to space, the amount of energy required to take a rod to space is roughly proprtional and always greater than the amount of energy you get from dropping the rod. Now take a high explosive warhead, the energy on target is equivalent to the mass of explosive in the warhead with minimal effects from the Kinetic energy of the delivery system.

And with those Explosive weapons, you don't have to spend all that energy to push the weapon into orbit, you can use an BM or Cruise Missile for less energy cost. In an (energy) cost-benefit analysis, it would be very hard to justify a Rod from God.

Rods from God don't real (and checked btw), but you know what does work from a physics standpoint? Rocks from the belt.

Yes, but instead of delivering nuclear destruction, it can deliver humanitarian aid, troops, equipment, munitions, and spare/replacement parts for strategic assets (jets, helicopters, tanks, etc)

I wonder what could be so urgent, survive a rocket launch and be worth risking nuclear retaliation over that can't be shipped by more conventional means.

              Anonymous

By that logic any rocket launch is risking nuclear retaliation since the payload COULD be a nuclear warhead.

Any classified USAF satellite launch COULD be a satellite with the ability to re-enter anywhere on earth concealing a nuclear warhead inside.

sure but what about the other arguments?
Such as this being comically expensive and there is NOTHING urgent enough to ship like that.

                >comically expensive
rockets are comically more expensive than they need to be if you're throwing the entire rocket away each time, Starship doesn't do that, it's much cheaper than you think

                >nothing urgent enough
dropping an entire battalion of marines into Taipei before the PLA lands

                >Starship doesn't do that, it's much cheaper than you think
Still magnitudes more expensive than yknow, a plane.

                >dropping an entire battalion of marines into Taipei before the PLA lands
I am pretty sure, it is faster to just put them in a plane and fly them there.

                >it is faster to just put them in a plane and fly them there
Not if you have a Starship standing at launch readiness, I'm not sure how you think a subsonic C-17 out of Virginia is going to beat a Starship out of Texas to Taiwan

                >Not if you have a Starship standing at launch readiness
You have to get the guys into the rocket and getting them ready to launch takes a good while. Or are all the starship marines just sitting there with their suits and diapers already on?
What if they need a change?
They also need to take them off again when they land, yknow.

You can't just tell them to get onto the plane.

All these things apply to loading a C-17, too. Presumably if the DoD wanted to seriously explore Starship in this role, they'd build a launch pad at Eglin or Wallops or something. So how does the C-17 "get there faster"?

                Anonymous

                >So how does the C-17 "get there faster"?
Fundamentally, the organizational and technological overhead and risk of a rocket launch is much, much bigger than the overhead of a plane launch. This is completely trivial.

Therefore, the question isn't really "which thing goes faster", but "which thing can launch sooner", because the time you save in travel time, you're making up for in preparation time.
And once again, there are things where cost is an issue, this is one of them. There is so much MORE overhead than just the launches. You need to train people, because you can't just stick a guy into a rocket and expect them to handle it well and be combat ready immediately afterwards, so you need training launches and people specifically trained for rocket deployment.

What argument is there really for shooting guys in rockets as opposed to having them ride a (relatively) comfy plane? Speed isn't the only thing that matters in a transportation method. Convenience is king and this also applies to the military.

Like an ICBM, but with a reentry vehicle the size of a 747 and an aircraft transponder. Following your logic would have us ban cargo planes because they "might look like bombers". A radar will not struggle to seperate a 1m cross section target from a 500m cross section target.
