So the /k/ shitpost about an iPad being jury rigged into the Mig was...just a shitpost. Still a very interesting development- I assume other countries with tons of Soviet gear with little cash to spare will look into making these Frankensteins as a temporary alternative.

Not necessarily, the iPad could still be the main interface for targeting since those systems don't integrate with the MiG.

Do you think this is something new for Ukraine instead of something that has been standard-issue for the past 20 years?

      its don't. Take a look :

See that LCD screen in center console? See how it is present in only half of the montage? That's it.

you can see really clearly at 58s that it's just running a navigation app, nothing related to the HARM

Might be on the inside, it's not unheard of.
Other /k/tards claimed it was also likely they are pre-programmed and just have a rigged launch pylon like OP's image.

Nobody was saying an ipad was holding the missile on the outside.

Its' the easiest way. Almost plug and play as burgers def had all the work already done in case they want to mount these weapons where they don't belong.
Probably developed in factory before even having it go in mass production where it's integrated in the weapon systems it is meant for.
      >Mount that pylon
      >Drag a cable or two to wienerpit
      >Install control unit and connect to power
      >plug the Ipad in and download the app
Done, just like throwing an aftermarket head unit in your shitbox

Wouldn't be that surprising, they did some other weird shit with Harpoon missiles where they basically strapped them to some trucks.

Told you Black folk that how they did it, at least now I have confirmed proof of the LAU-118A being adapted. I don't think they're using a MiG retrofitted with US electronics anymore, as the MiG's weapons control system still sees the HARM as an R-27EP. So, I think they're using the LAU-118/A with Aircraft Launch Interface Computer (ALIC)(see: circled area in pic) to control/program the HARM, and a simplug/adapter to make the MiG think it's talking to an R-27EP, and the ALIC to think it's talking to an F-16. I still think they're using the HARM in Pre-Briefed(PB) mode, though.

They're rigged to the Mig-29's with NATO(US) standard 1553 bus systems, and LAU-118/A missile launcher adapted to the Mig-29's pylon mount.

For the US DoD admitting to sending AMG-88 HARMs being fired from Ukrainian aircraft at ~27m40s here:
      https://www.c-span.org/video/?522229-1/pentagon-estimates-russian-casualties-70-80k-ukraine-war#

The Polish Mig-29's being upgraded to NATO MIL-STD-1553B data bus here:

      >In 2011-2014 period 16 aircraft from the 1. elt received second modernization package, consisting of MFCD 5”x7” multi-function display, MDP mission computer, Up-Front Control Panel (UFCP), Honeywell Enhanced GPS Inertial navigation system (EGI) with SAASM, MIL-STD-1553B data bus and Rockwell Collins AN/ARC-210 (Talon RT-8200) VHF/UHF radio, exploitation was changed from flight hours to based on technical status.[8][9]
      https://military-history.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Mikoyan_MiG-29_operators#_Poland

      >LAU-118/A missile launcher adapted to the Mig-29's pylon mount
The LAU-118/A is the launcher for the AGM-88 HARM, and would be trivial to adapt to the Mig-29 pylon that already has the MIL-STD-1553 wiring. This is my speculation, as I don't have a source it was done.

The tablet is more than likely flight planning software with integrated GPS to show the pilot when he is in the weapons launch window for certain pre-determined radars.

        Anonymous

As you can see on the Head Down Display (HDD) of the MiG-29, the weapons control system recognizes the HARM as an R-27EP still. One on each wing.

Based on what I can tell the pylon is probably interpreting the launch signal intended for the R-27EP (a passive ARM variant of the Fox-3 R-27 into the AGM-88. We saw some wienerpit footage where the selected weapon was displayed as R-27EP.
I'm still not convinced it's possible for the missile to interface with the jet's systems, it's probably operating in Pre-Brief, but this rail provides the launch command.

      Anonymous

      >I'm still not convinced it's possible for the missile to interface with the jet's systems
      Doesn't have to
As I kept saying, AGM-88 is more platform agnostic than some other weapons. Almost as easy to rig as Sidewinder.

      Anonymous

It doesn't need to be pre briefed. The pilot can patrol around until the missile finds a lock then launch.

        Anonymous

that requires RWR integration which is probably not possible with the Soviet shit cans with their barely functional ones.

          Anonymous

          This.

Russian RWRs aren't even close to Vietnam era US gear.

AFAIK you can lob a HARM in the general direction of a radar and set it to home in on anything it finds. This means you have a chance of wasting a missile, but there is a non trivial chance of succeeding in hitting something, certainly something that disrupts/suppresses enemy missile systems

            Anonymous

It’s probably more effective than it seems since Russians might try and turn on and off their radars.
The HARM remembers where you are though so you have no assurances you won’t be hit even if your radar is off.

          Anonymous

          Says who?

Pilot detects radar on inbuilt Soviet RWR, notes bearing, shoots HARM at that bearing in search-and-destroy mode

      Anonymous

I think TOO is much more likely, use the RWR / intel to point the right direction and send it, the seeker will start searching as soon as it comes off the rail.
To use PB you need to interface with the missile and give it the coordinates it's going to be fired from so the INS has a starting point. I doubt this is even possible because it's so impractical.

      Anonymous

      >I'm still not convinced it's possible for the missile to interface with the jet's systems

It is, the crazy bastard hackers in the US pulled it off. They emulate an F16 for the AGM-88 and a R27-EP for the plane with a microcontroller which acts as an adapter.

The reason they chose this approach and not the pre-brief method is that they wanted the Ukrainian pilots to give the opportunity to react quickly to new appearing threats, making their mission less dependent on intel about the threats on the ground.JY4HN

Shortage of engineers willing to work for peanuts maybe. Somehow every time my company is looking for engineers they manage to find some to interview (though they would rather keep job postings open in the hopes someone will work for below market value pay). Never believe anyone who says there’s a “shortage” of workers. They really mean there’s a shortage of them willing to work for much less than what the other guy is paying.

kinda this, once you modify the dorsal spine to carry a reasonable fuel load and dump in the better radar and avoionics into the airframe, it loses its awesome thrust to weight ratio and ceases to be the snappy manueverable jet you started out with.

At that point you're better off just using a different platform

It's almost like they didn't learn from the last time they did the same.
At least the -29SMT isn't so unstable at certain fuel states that it randomly departs from controllable flight, while being used as a nap of the earth strike fighter, like the -21 SMT was.

What sort of control systems are needed inside the aircraft to arm, target, launch, whatever, the missile?

Is it just a wire with a pushbutton connected to a 9V battery? Or do these things require sophisticated electronics boxes to program them before launch?
