Any of you guys seen a MiG-21 in real life? The plane is fricking tiny. I saw one parked next to an F-4 and it's comical. Way closer in size to a MiG-17 than any other aircraft.

I still laugh at yugoslavia getting a mig-21 for a pair of shoes right around when the USSR collapsed
Imagine being the guy who brokered that exchange.

          no details to tell you.
they straight up traded a pair of fricking shoes to some russian for a mig 21.
my source is an old bosnian who was a colonel back in the day.
so far some of his more outlandish stories have been proven true so I see no reason to doubt this.

Sounds like they got the short end of the deal, should've thrown in a T80 to make it fair

might not have had access to one at the time.
maybe this poor guy with access to military hardware but no shoes only had planes?
one day I might pry the details out of him.

an unrelated story but an example of the wild shit he saw and knew of (that I INDEPENDENTLY verified to be true, with limited video footage) was this chad during the bosnian wars who drove off some serb tanks on his own after he picked up some kind of chinese anti tank cannon off a tripod and ran at them firing it.
Took out one and the others fled.

MiG 21s have some aesthetic qualities to them, but anyone still flying them in 2022 doesn't have a serious airforce

Pretty embarrassing to see the Mig-21 outlive the F-14 Tomcat, isn't it?

The F-14 still is in service tho.

Generally, you always want a squadron of MIG-21s, in all situations, regardless of the question.

    Let me explain.

The F-16D is our excellent generalist shitbox which comes in at 30 mil USD. Let's stretch the realistic payload from:

    >Payload: two 2,000-pound bombs, two AIM-9, two AIM-120 and two 2400-pound external fuel tanks

    to 6 AIM-120 and 6 AIM-9x. Whatever.

For 30 mil, you can get FIFTEEN fricking MIG-21s that are coming in high, fast, and smoking hot. Even if EVERY SINGLE FRICKING MISSILE IS A HIT, the F-16 still has THREE fricking SOVIET MURDER MACHINES to contend with.

Just like the F-35, it can't run, it can't hide, it can't turn. Of course, because the MIG-21s are imparting more altitude and speed to their missiles, the F-16 would be blown out of the sky before any of this happens, but let's say it does.

At this point the F-16 is a sitting duck. If it tries to go to cannons, it will get out-turned by the lighter, faster, higher T/W ratio MIG-21. If it tries to run, it will get popped. If it tries to climb...well, the MIG-21s are already above it.

Really, the MIG-17 or the MIG-9 could do the job as well, but this is simpler to explain.

The MiG 21 is a pretty effective murder machine, at least for the pilot.

this is assuming the third worlder pilots of whatever country is spamming Mig21s aren't moronic, unaggressive, poorly trained pilots like the Iraqis during the iran-iraq were. You're assuming the mig21s' pilots are Imperial Japan-tier motivated.

Remember when Romania grounded their MiG-21 LanceRs due to “considerably high accident rate”, earlier this year?
