    >A-1
so they will reuse designations now? the whole point of numbers is they are infinite.

      Anonymous

It's not reused you fuckin retard

A-1 (which was the AD-1 when it entered service back then, it didn't become A-1 until the A-1D varient, years later) ended its production with the A-1J, this is the OA-1K. That's a new designation never been used before. Also OA is for Observation and Attack. Since this plane is for ISR and CAS.

How does this fit into current/future needs? Counter-insurgency is so last decade

      Africa and Israel

At this point why the fuck don't we just start shitting out new A-1s instead of this Micky mouse shit.

That would require all new production tooling and redesigns for modern engines and electronics. Now they can use a current production airframe with some modifications and avoid spending all that money on a clean sheet design.

The Air Tractor is a pretty reliable frame, since it's essentially based off of a cropduster. The US already uses it for a lot of applications like firefighting and anti-drug ops. Props are a lot hardier than jet turbines, after all.

At this point, they'd do better with a remotely-controlled ball-turret (or a turret like an Apache,) aimed through VR goggles and controlled with a Playstation-style controller. You'd hardly have to train your video-game-playing gunners to use it.

No, the point is it can be loaded onto a cargo plane, flown anywhere in the world, assembled by 1 mechanic and 2 helpers within a day, flown from dirt roads or empty fields if needed, and can be maintained by a single mechanic without any specialty tools.

Oh yeah and it can also be modified for amphibious takeoff/landing.

Everybody in this thread needs to understand: this plane is based on the Air Tractor AT-802 airframe. This is basically the perfect plane for its role: excellent low speed agility and stability, allowing it to loiter efficiently for reconnaissance and to maneuver accurately to attack a target. Great performance at low altitude and can take off and land in a short distance on a dirt airstrip. And all at a low base cost. It’s a reliable and proven design, people have tried to improve on it for decades and none have supplanted it. The requirements for crop dusting are very similar to a light attack and reconnaissance plane which operates in uncontested airspace. The AT-802 is used around the world for firefighting, which is basically the same mission profile as a precise attack run. It’s an excellent airplane and a great choice to be adapted into this kind of platform.

Because congress was trying to force it down AFSOCs throat, and you can get fucked if you support a congressman being able to decide carte blanche for the military what vehicle they should buy.

Even if the Texan WAS the best choice, I support AFSOC telling congress to get bent and stay in their lane.
