Man, shopping carts are like stupid overengineered. I had one in my shed full of junk and a 1000lb roll of hay fell on it from the top of a stack. Didn't even dent it

Why do you have a shopping cart in your shed?
Where else would I keep it? It would seem silly to keep it in the house.
give it back
Lol it's from a local grocery store that closed
>closed
maybe that was because people were stealing shit like their carts
I just wanted to talk about the structural integrity of shopping carts 🙁
Yeah. That's fair. Sorry.
They are pretty awesome in terms of what they hold for their weight in the face of the otherwise debilitating requirement that they stack.
Aluminum cans are likewise remarkable.
For an encore, drop something on the milk crates you stole from the store you drove out of business. The ones that stores use look much more durable than the crap they sell at Target.
its made to withstand years of abuse by idiots, teenager and stupid boomers who cant read.
I was on holiday with my father, i noticed that the car was waaaay overloaded on the back axel.
my foot could no longer fit in the wheelwell.
Being an engineer i explained the importance of load balancing and adhering to specification.
Do you think he cared for one second. He refused to even stop and adjust the headlights. He did not even know where the switch was. Driving through the night blinding the ISS with the headlines.
I cringed so hard that i got out at a red light went over and did the adjustment by myself.
All the way down and it was still way to high.
I wheep for engineers who have to design public facing products. Its pure horror what people do with shit they view for granted.
That doesn't adjust your headlights you fricking dolt
There are two adjusters usually. One adjusts dashboard brightness, other adjusts the tilt of headlights. Usually is fully analog with hydraulic hose filled with liquid.
Not in my car, it's just a few screws.
Maybe it is euro/us car difference.
But in either case, this is part of history nowadays, as we have LED shit that adjusts beam automagically and blinds ongoing trafic
Sounds like overengineered euro crap that breaks. bmw and mercedes cars are terrible but so are anything american. Only Made In Japan is any good. Even if it's assembled here it's worse.
yes it does you fricking spastic
that's the brightness setting for the inside lights lmao
scrap yards wont take shopping carts for obvious reasons. stealing them would be useless.
>obvious reasons
That they're indestructible?
no stupid. cause if scrap yards took them, bums and thieves would steal them all day and turn them in because they are easy to obtain from any store parking lot. and thats theft. so they wont take shopping carts.
>stupid
Thank you for paying the toll. You may cross the bridge now.
You say theft, I say an untapped market.
You just have to cut them up until they're unrecognizable.
Scrap yards will also take a car without a title, but it has to be less than 50%, i.e. cut in half with a 12" demolition sawzall and flipped onto the back of a truck.
ALWAYS mention your location because not every scrapyard and state has the same policy. For example SC takes cars without title if over 14 years old. Many states don't require titles for transfer of older vehicles and do bills of sale instead like GA.
Shopping carts aren't worth scrapping even if some yard takes them.
How do you prove that the car is older than 14 years without a title?
If it's not immediately obvious just by looking at the car, there's these
Shopping carts retail new for under $200. If a store goes under from losing shopping carts, they were being run incompetently to begin with.
Lol this.
>useless
Urban wheelbarrow.
>Urban wheelbarrow.
I meant stealing them to scrap would be useless because scrap yards wont take them, but using them for personal stuff is ok. they are built like tanks.
Did you rob it and force it to close?
God damnit, Bubs.
Thread theme
Tyrone, give it back.
Store i used to work at stopped replacing its half carts because indians in the apartments next door kept taking them to get their groceries home then ditched them at the dumpster or elsewhere. My paki manager hated them
They may not look like it, but the way the frame is built to support the cage makes most of them fricking tanks.
As long as the welds hold, they refuse to yield.
They need to withstand some fat american lard blob sitting on it with 500lbs of doritos and mountain dew in the cart. Of course it's strong
>sitting on it
you cant sit on the cart. where are you gonna sit? on the edge? some fatass surely isnt going to get inside the basket and sit there. moron.
>some fatass surely isnt going to get inside the basket and sit there
You think?
Kids do it all the time.
Are shopping carts the new shipping containers?
you underestimate the power of welding anon
and it's cheaper to build the cart to last than to replace or service it periodically
>Frame and cage is designed to be a near indestructible, immortal lovechild of metal and welding ingenuity.
>Wheels jam because of some loose hair it picked up, reducing the entire thing to a useless hunk of metal.
It makes for a decent sled if you remove the wheels.
jam because of some loose hair it picked up
Razors have their blades, video games have their lootboxes, shopping carts have their wheels.
Anon you have a point am a welder in Africa and it's not often but when they do need repair it's the wheel or a shitty weld that pops also see the africanis Bergies are the kings of the cart they completely live out of them like an iron steed they pack on their good sometimes in excess of 100kgs and "skud" as the locals say
The weight is cantilevered and attached close to the drive wheels making it easier to turn under load.
Man, how the frick do they hold all that weight through these two bars in the back. If they were directly under the weight of the basket it would make sense, but they're several feet away from it. How the frick do these things not bend under hundreds of pounds of groceries?
thicker steel
also the ones where I live are a different design with no bottom tray, and they add 2 diagonal reinforcements so it's not all levering off that bars
>Man, how the frick do they hold all that weight through these two bars in the back
metal = stronk
magnets
I have had this thought too. Both plastic and metal ones are really durable. I guess they need to be since they get used and abused daily and spend their lives rolling around parking lots.
Whatever they coat the wire with is really good too, I rarely notice chips in the finish.
Modern carts are usually zinc plated with a clear powder coat. That stuff can last forever. The carts where I shop (Safeway) are black powder coated.
frickin' decent, eh?
Oh wow, hay, you mean super strong hay didn't dent it? It didn't break because 1000lbs of hay probably weighs like 20lbs in real life or something.
did you mean that the cushion of the hay would distrubute the load from 1000lbs per square inch to 20lbs per square inch?
No, idiot, 1000lbs of hay weighs about 20lbs.
Can you read?
If any store in your area has one of these signs, it's time to move.
>If any store in your area has one of these signs, it's time to move.
LOL.. why? just because you cant take the cart back to your homeless camp to use as a storage closet, you should move to another state that allows it? LOL.. you are one funny idiot!
probably implying that if it's a large enough occurrence that they need to take such measures it's probably a bad area
I doubt its that. walmarts in nice areas have that also. its pretty much everywhere.
>walmarts in nice areas
no such thing
thats because your redneck ass lives in the ghetto and thats what you consider a nice area because you are poor and broke and live in a dumpster
>Redneck
>Ghetto
Pick one.
>its pretty much everywhere.
No, just everywhere you go. None of the stores in my town, not even the big box stores, have wheel arresters. It would be a complete waste of money to install.
Because it means the store has lost enough revenue from thefts that it needed to invest in even more loss prevention. Obviously, the only people that steal are Black folk, so if your local store has this, that means there a lot of Black folk in the area. Moving would be wise, as you can relocate to an area with fewer undesirables and the sooner you sell your house in this situation, the more money you'll get, since the property value will be miniscule once Tyrone and Shaquandeesha move in next door.
Wonder if someone could take an RF georeactor in to the store and lock all the carts en mass...
My local shop had a power outage and the carts stayed locked for like 3 days, it was hilarious.
i seen homeless people carry carts over the yellow linre
homeless win again
Hell yeah borther. When I was a kid I stole one, removed the wheels, mounted skis on it, and got absolutely rag dolled when I took it down a big ass hill. 10 year old me was too stupid to realize there was no way to turn or brake, and the center of gravity was way too high for stable flight. I wound up in the hospital, but the shopping cart was no worse for the wear.
>must be able to handle insane weights of canned goods/dog food
>must be able to handle an ungodly amount of miles of travel
>has to be able to survive getting slammed into others
>must take thousands of pounds of compression weight to be in a mobile stack of carts
>thousands of pounds
low hundreds I would guess less, the friction generated by the wheels is not enough to immobilize the stack and a teenager has to be able to push it.
Based documentary about extreme Canadian downhill shopping cart racing:
Inspiring. Right in the feels every time.
What are some things you can do with shopping carts? Aside from using them as a cart.
you can fill them with hay, set it on fire and roll it down a hill and watch it crash and burn.
Hey, I have an economy just like that!
You could use one as a shaker-sifter if you had to sort out big enough pieces of something.
Mobile grill. Put a metal tray on the very bottom full of wood/charcoal. Use the bottom of the main basket as the grill.
Expect the first steaks to taste a little funny..
If your steaks are tasting funny you need to stop cooking clowns.
If you got the one with the bottom high enough to be used as a seat, cut off the handle side and it's a nice stable mobile seat i use it this way in my shop or to move around big wood clamps for glue upsAH
Take the wheels off and use them to build an indestructible wall.
Waterproof one and try to use it as a boat
People have been making chairs and other furniture from them since at least the 1970s, some of them aren't half bad, or at least aren't any worse than a lot of similarly styled furniture made for that purpose.
theyre something like $250 brand new
these should have been stock piled and sold to an independant grocer. too bad most of the small grocers dont have room for these giant carts.
i alwys wondered what happens to homedepot carts when theyre stolen and brought to the homeless camps. well when the city comes by to clean the homeless camp, they just throw these in a garbage truck and crush them. waste of $1000... welcome to america. would they pull that kind of shit in any 'poor' country?
Probably some bullshit legalism. Cleaning them with disinfectant spray and wipes is "too much effort" and they're considered "too dirty", risks of moron lawsuits that are allowed to go through for the sake of lawyer money. Same stupid reason perfectly good food gets thrown into locked and guarded dumpsters instead of being given out, because some fat 50 year old moron might get sick and decide to throw her dead husband's life savings at a lawyer to sue and win.
Inb4 bubbles
The world leader is a small to medium sized German company, if I recall. That is why their quality is generally pretty good and why Americans need underpaid Mexicans (formerly high schoolers) to make the shopping cart system function.
I wonder how much mileage an average shopping cart sees in its lifetime.
The only thing that I would think would go out is the bearings in the wheels. Not sure what else could wear out, the rubber maybe
either they will serve as an important tool post apocalypse or we will be talking about how shopping carts aren't built the way they used to be in 20 years
>Litmus test: failed
It's because normies don't treat community property nice. Those heavy casters work good for 150 pound spools of wire.
I wouldn't waste a shopping cart on that, I'd use an old lawn mower
