Major defects found on all ROKN Type 214 subs

https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2022/10/major-defects-found-on-south-koreas-type-214-submarine-fleet/

>major defects have been found on all nine ROKN Son Won-il class submarines, modified versions of the German Type 214
>defects in the inverter modules' cables were found on 7 of the submarines, while 2 of them had "functional" defects in the inverter modules themselves.
>The modules, produced by Germany's Siemens, are a critical component in a submarine's propulsion system
>third ship of the class had to be towed back to shore after being stranded in the middle of the East Sea
>second ship of the class has not been deployed since October 2019 due to a leak from its cooling system damaging the inverter module
>The Defense Acquisition Program Administration has paid Siemens 7.1 billion Korean won for repairs.

Yet Korea is paying Siemens for the repairs.
They are also "modified." By the Koreans? Did they frick up their equipment?

It states that the submarine's being modified, not the converter module.

The cables are in the converter module, which means it's shipped intact from Germany without any modification involved.

I know its probably a rough translation but People Power Party is such a silly name for a political party
      >However, some South Korean observers also wrote online that the current administration should also take responsibility and stop redirecting criticism.
Isn't not taking responsibility and redirecting criticism a South Korean national passtime?

Not entitely sure as one of the boats apparently had its cooling system leak all over one of the inverters which damaged it. My guess is some quirk with the inverters that's being exacerbated by shoddy korean maintenance and operating procedures as per

      >still operate the subs like normal
more like pretending nothing is wrong

, which is why we're not seeing this with anyone else's Type 214s.

I wonder if any problems have been carried over to the KSS-III, though probably not because propulsion is different.

IN the article it says they have no idea why the modules fail but still operate the subs like normal. It also says in ONE sub they know a cooling leak destroyed one of the modules. How are the chances they all are getting corroded by coolant leaks? Because "they think" that the cables could make the inverters rust, which seems rather far fetched on triple insulated copper wires.

This really shows how relatively backward korea military industry still are despite their recent achievement.

Japan could develop their own submarine with negligible help from other countries while Korea couldn't even develop their own sub design, which is even sadder considering that they already have the 209 design and they could've develop a brand new submarine based on 209 instead of buying another submarine design.

In fact 214 is basically 209 with some 212 tech onboard.

They could develop a bog ancient submarine. Fricking Iran could build a WW2-tech submarine.

What they want is a brand new, state of the art submarine

To be fair, there is a massive institutional knowledge gap that South Korea is working against. They only turned toward developing blue water capabilities in the late 80s and didn't have a submarine force until they acquired their first submarine from Germany until 1992. Meanwhile Japan started domestically producing submarines postwar in 1954 and was working from it's already extensive submarine building experience in the imperial era, with its first boats essentially being improved I-201 classes with some american design inputs.
I'm sure Korea will get there eventually if they can put this seeming culture of pretending nothing is wrong and conducting operations with known flaws, that shit doesn't mix with submarines very well.

It's moronic to the point of flattering that homosexuals like you unironically compare South Korea to the japs like this.
You do realize that South Korea was a developing country until recently? All of these projects started when people didn't even think South Korea could seriously compete with the japs and yet here we are.
And now you have to think how much further Korea will go now that they are more or less equal while the japs have been stagnant for decades.
Imagine thinking the fricking Vietnam will be equal to the japs in 10 years and then it actually happening. That's the moronic level of stagnation that the japs have imposed upon themselves.

Fricking rent free. Just like clockwork weebs crawl into a Korea thread and cry. How about you have a nice day?

SK tinkering with German design = guaranteed mess

        >After the finding of debris from Nanggala, Yudo Margono said the submarine might have cracked instead of exploded, as an explosion would have been detected by sonar.[75] Indonesian legislator and retired Major General Tubagus Hasanuddin suspected the refit, performed by the South Korean firm DSME in 2012, may not have been performed properly. He said that after the refit, the submarine had failed a torpedo firing test, which resulted in three deaths.

The best part is China doesn't like that stupid term because East China Sea has been traditionally called East Sea there, they don't want another East Sea.
