Magnum research BFR

Ok I’m going to be turning 21 within a few months. Gramps passed his /K/ollection onto me, but due to cali law I have to have a gun in my name to purchase ammo. So by law I gotta buy another gun if I don’t want to reload everything I shoot.

Well about a month ago pic related showed up at my lgs for 1500. If it’s still there when I turn 21 I’m seriously considering buying it. Anyone have any experience with this 45-70 meme iron?

For the sake of my wrists, please convince me not to buy it.

That was kinda my thought but I don’t want to buy a gun that I’ll never shoot although I do live in mountain lion country and I could theoretically carry it for protection but I kind of think the 9mm I carry would work out better.

How the frick does California put so many constructive barriers to exercising a right enumerated within the constitution?
Why does anyone, excepting spics, still live there?

In some ways it sucks but hey at least I’ve got an excuse to buy another gun. Thanks cali for encouraging gun sales.

You can regurgitate whatever bullshit you've swallowed, but .45-70 in a revolver is less powerful than both .460 mag and .500 mag.

And 454 Casull puts the same amount of stress on the cylinder and all of those other 3 companies make one.

I also got a BFR as my first gun. I love the thing but the ammo, even the weak shit, is very expensive.

Yeah but the X-frame only has a 2,500 round service life, the weakest of any magnum revolver on the market, so it’s shit compared to the BFR.

if absolutely you must have a big ridiculous revolver get any s&w x-frame

The x frames break themselves. The bfr is actually built to last.

I'm probably one of the few people who load for and regularly shoot a BFR. They're not the prettiest gun ever but they're finely made and supremely accurate for those who know how to use them. With the cylinder length you can load any bullet without fear of OAL limitations.

If you're buying it just for fun and don't reload, the expensive factory ammo and learning curve will make shooting it more of a chore than fun.

Where do books place the BFR in terms of strength?
I doubt it's there with the Ruger No1.

I regularly load to 1895 and sometimes No.1 level loads with zero issues mechanically. Though one time the ejector rod screw broke from repeated recoil battering it.

I own a 500 BFR as well but don't load as much .500S&W.

At some point I want to get into reloading. Right now I mostly shoot muzzleloaders but I guess you’re right. Maybe I should just get a “non-chore” gun instead. How much did you get yours for and do you think 1500 is a reasonable price?

      https://i.imgur.com/ohJbhVJ.png

Well since you are just getting a gun to be able to get ammo then get a cheap .22 rifle that you could also plink with late on if you decide to

Well the guns that we got from grandpa are mostly rifles. I want to get a nice handgun for myself if I’m required to buy another gun.

$750 for the .45-70 and $600 for the .500S&W. I wouldn't spend $1500. Seems very high. Keep your eyes peeled for a used one. People buy them and get bored in a week. How I got both of mine.

Alright I think I’ll probably pass on that one. I feel like my lgs tends to be a bit pricey with certain things.

Doesn't legally transferring the firearms require a form to be sent to CA DOJ, putting you in DROS automatically?

The BFR is a cool gun that I wouldn't mind buying for myself later down the line, however $1500 is a pretty high price to pay just to satisfy California's set of rules (Not to mention that 45-70 sounds like a hard to come by round unless you get yourself reloading equipment). I'd would suggest checking to see if your lgs has anymore single action revolvers around for a cheaper price, and that has ammo that's more available. It's likely you'll stumble across a Heritage Rough Rider which I would recommend if you aren't really looking to get into reloading, for it's a fun and cheap (150-200ish dollars) little plinker gun, and 22lr (22 mag too if you get the 22 mag cylinder) is very easy to come across and doesn't require reloading to get into; or, you'll stumble across a Uberti or Ruger gun, which will likely accept 45 lc, the guns themselves can range from 500-1000kish dollars, but 45lc is much easier to come by than 45-70 (At least here in Washington), though reloading certainly helps the 45lc, and with that 500ish dollars leftover, you'll certainly have the money for the reloading supplies. I'll let you do your homework on the guns you come across. Oh and by the way, if you stumble across a gun that accepts 44-40 rounds, do not buy it; I bought a gun for that caliber as my first gun and I'm still paying the price for it. D: (Still like the gun though, even if I still haven't been to shoot it yet)

Im like 90% sure theres some bullshit form where you declare a gun you can fill out to buy ammo. This was cause there were a bunch of people with guns existing before 2014 that werent linked to ca can buy bullets/own a gun database.Something like 90% of people trying to buy ammo who were denied could legally buy ammo but the database was utter shit. Ask calguns for the exact info.
Though you just having turned 21 my be an issue.

The BFR is an ugly gun with an atrocious grip and ammo that's expensive even to reload. Buy a .454 Super Redhawk or Raging Bull and a reloading setup. .45-70 forces you to use inherently expensive .458 bullets, but any copper base .45 ACP bullet will shoot out of a .454 without issue. It gives you ~80% of the power a .45-70 revolver has at less than half the price.

Have you ever shot one? The grip is fricking amazing for what it needs to do. Which is absorb recoil.

        Anonymous

Yeah, I've shot just about every .454 dedicated gun on the US market, including the Freedom Arms Model 83. Bisley grips let the recoil roll upwards, but modern grips give you better control. You trade increased horizontal recoil for less vertical recoil. Add porting and the aforementioned alternatives have about as much muzzle flip as a .357 Mag of similar barrel length. I will admit it hurts a lot more: the gun feels like it's attacking your hand, rather than trying to escape like a Bisley grip. I'd say the BFR is a better precision gun, but the DA .454s on the market are overall more fun. You get a crowd at the range when you let off 5 rounds of rifle-tier ammo out of your big revolver in 2 seconds.

    buy it.

the ammo is expensive but you can use the gun to rob banks to pay for the ammo you shoot out of the gun.

it's california, you won't be going to jail for shit. especially if you blacken up your face with shoe polish and say bix nood all the time.

stealing shit in california is basically a life hack at this point in time.

just think of it anon, free ammunition and nikes for that beautiful b***h for the rest of your life. you'd be a fool not to.
