Magnet Fishing

I've been interested to try this out for a while now and decided now's the time. Will buy a starter out kit with all the essential tools in one package. For anyone who may have experience and be knowledgeable with magnet fishing, what tips would you give for one to be aware of when starting out?
Got any interesting or fun magnet fishing stories to share as well?

you have to be very careful where you throw them, some things might not be very obvious upon first glance. for example, if you're throwing it off of a bridge that has metal on the columns or elsewhere, and it gets stuck to it... bye bye magnet depending on the strength. best to transport it in the box it came in with foam too, otherwise you might put a dent in your car or potentially damage some electronics.

Oh! Will keep this in mind! Guess I'll will have a bigger backpack to put the box in when I carry it around.
My magnet will be delivered on Wednesday if all goes right! Then it Magnet Fishing Adventures! I'll post the stuff I get (if I get anything) here!
I mostly plan to explore more rocky places but it's good to be aware of your surroundings like you've pointed out, Thanks!

Is there a way to get them to attract non-ferrous metals such as gold?

      Anonymous

no, impossible. magnets only attach to iron based mateirals (pure iron or ferritic steel) that have a ferritic crystalline structure. they also won't attach to the other steels (martensitic, austenitic or duplex steels) or any other metal

They'll also stick to nickel and cobalt.

      Bump.
Don't seem to be a common hobby here. Well two more days until I get my magnet!
How about mudlarking? Any mudlurkers here?
I've also been interested in getting a metal detector in the future. I want o start out with magnet fishing then with gained experience eventually try more harder things, like diving and finding treasures. Got any treasure or mineral hunting experts on this board?

It's literally made-up fake YouTube shit. You will never find anything unless you throw it in the water yourself first so you cam fish it out and record it and make the edamameface for YouTube views.
Do you really think there's just that many handguns and waterproof safes full of money at the bottom of the river???
Why do you think people with metal detectors on beaches need the metal detector and don't just walk around with a shovel digging holes at random hoping to find things.
It drives me insane how on this board people spoon-feed obvious newbies, bump literal made up larp shit like bushcraft and magnet fishing, and then call you a larper when you talk about your gear or actual outings you went on.
I need to just quit this board it's pissing me off so bad.

While I do suspect that a lot of the YouTube videos are staged, you WILL find stuff. It will be 90% junk though. Picking the right spots like I mentioned here

try the docks where peope load and unload their boats. people always drop shit when getting/loading in and out. also, swimming beaches on lakes. for rivers, try close to the road bridges, people probably throw shit off a lot, including murder weapons.

will make your chances much better. The reason people use metal detectors on beaches is to find things like israeliteelry or deeply buried items. Regardless, even if you never find anything but junk, the fun is in getting outside and exploring. Sitting at home b***hing is not good for your mind.

        Who pissed in your cereals?
Of course I'm not expecting getting safes of money. I just think it looks fun, like a suprise, you never know what you'll get even if it that staff is only trash to you.
Honestly, I mostly expect to get cans, spikes and bottle caps. But if anything I'll at least clean out the environment even if it's just a little bit.

I plan for my first try go to the nearest beach where people go swimming in the summer and see what I manage to get.

I have one of the smaller ones(about 3.5in diameter) but haven't used it much yet. I always plan to but end up fishing instead. One day I need to take the canoe out and leave my fishing rods at home so I'll be forced to use it.

        It's a pretty one.
If you do manage to use it, please share your findings!

Bought this exact magnet set on Amazon, went fishing a few time but only ever got trash (literally small pieces of rust) and fish hooks. It seems cool in the videos but I’m sure you have to live in or near a highly populated area for there to be interesting magnetic stuff in the water.

Just a random image I pulled of Google, bought another brand.
Fish hooks are a pretty neat find, where they still in a usable condition or too far gone?

I think I saved 1 hook the rest were not usable, so all in all I got 1 free hook and artificial bait, and cleaned up a local waterway a little bit.

sounds exciting. I've seen some videos and if I were to do it I'd wear leather gloves and closed toe shoes

        Yeahhhh! I'm super excited!
You follow any magnet fishing channel or got any video you recommend? I've watched some and it looks like they have dishwasher gloves.

Nah just the odd ones that will come up on my feeds. Some of the stuff looks sharp so that's why i'd want something like leather gloves

Pack a spare change of clothes and a towel incase you need to go in to retrieve the magnet. But most importantly have fun 🙂

Also don't be disappointed if you don't get much. Some places are great for magnet fishing and some are horrible for it. You'll pick it up soon enough though.

Done it a few times. You mostly get trash. Old pipes. Signposting. Fishing hooks. Half a skateboard.

Bring trash bags and something to carry them in (large bucket, wheelbarrow). Even if all you get is trash, you're cleaning up the waterways.

I've started keeping the keys I find. I think those are pretty novel.

    Tetanus.

The amount of rusty stuff that is sharp is a problem, especially off bridges. Carry tools to get the stuff off the magnet. Gloves help, but you can still stab yourself.

Strong magnets cost more and are likely to stick to something too big and you can't get it loose. The fancy ones have a release mechanism.

That's true about the tools. Carry a pair of pliers and use those isntead of pulling stuff off the magnet with your hands. It can turn into a bad habit if you don't and you will eventually get cut on something.

Getting tetanus from rust is a myth. Tetanus is a bacterial infection, and rust isn't a bacterium. The myth came about because most people who used to get it would get it from being cut on a farm--where most of the metal is rusty, and where there is animal shit everywhere which is what actually conveyed the tetanus bacteria. But they would get tetanus just the same if they were cut by clean metal, or broken glass or whatever, in that environment.

That said, no you don't want to get cut by rusty metal anyway and pliers are a good idea.

My younger brother and his friends went magnet fishing and found a possibly live Korean War era mortar. They brought it to the bar and the story made national news

Yay! I've got me a magnet!

Yoooo! That super awesome! Is it possible to still find a news article about this online? Link?

I'd like to get a signpost, those are pretty cool. Having a key collection is also pretty sweet, those things can have pretty unique and beautiful designs depending on their age, I'd love to see your collection.
Will remember to bring trash bag and a bucket.

Very nice. Be warned that buying magnets is a slippery slope, i have 3 now lol. 1 more tip is to get a bar of some type to put through the eye loop in case you get stuck on a flat surface and need the leverage to get it off. I use this but anything similar will do. Happy fishing!

I’ll add I’m not sure why the news articles seem to keep claiming they were using a metal detector. Maybe because the general population aren’t aware of magnet fishing?

I always wrap my magnet with plastic wrap and tie it at the top with a rubber band or something.
This way I can take it off and it doesn't end up caked in iron dust and other small shit from the bottom of the bride.

I do some mag-fishing. I compare it to metal detecting (which I've also done). You get 90% junk and waste 90% of your time, but that's what makes the wins more enjoyable. I have lost 4 magnets that got stuck (but they are pretty cheap).
