Magazine size

Are there any overlooked advantages to lower capacity magazines as opposed to large ones?

I got a Vepr in 7.62x54r since I thought it had 20-round magazines, but it turns out those are rare mystical treasures so I am stuck with 5 and 10 rounders. Regretting not just getting an AR-10 instead: same power bigger magazines easily available. What can I tell myself to cope /k/

Shorter mags don't stick as far out of the gun. That can make the gun less bulky and easier to carry, also easier to go prone or shoot off a bench without the mag hitting the ground/bench.

When you hand it to your friend to try out they can't magdump all 20 rounds, this saving you a few bucks. You also can't magdump as much so your range time will be spread out more.

Yeah for hiking you don't want a big magazine.

Same with hunting, you're never going to get the opportunity to use 90% of the rounds anyway. A flush-fit mag is ideal.

Big mags are a crutch for poor shooters and inaccurate guns.

In regards to things like drums and coffin mags, they typically suffer in reliability compared to standard mags. Plus the added weight of having 2 or 3 mags worth of ammo in one mag can severely affect your ability to effectively use a rifle. In the case of super long normal mags, you typically suffer in maneuverability. For example I had a galil with a few 50 rounders and trying to use the bipod with one in the gun meant you couldn't aim up if you were prone as the mag prevented the rear of the gun being brought down. If I were you I'd say frick it and enjoy that rifle for what it is rather than what it could be. If you really can't accept it for what it is, give it a PSL stock and pretend it's a dragunov

Thank you my friends, great point! I don"t need some giant thing in the way anyway, I shall love my rifle for what it is

    >buying slavshit guns in the hopes they offer a practical advantage over ARs
You done goofed. Slavshit is for fun. AR-10 blows everything out of the water for a practical semi auto full size cartridge gun. Standard capacity may as well be 25 now with 50 available if you want. Keep the VEPR though, it is fun and neat.

I got an ar10 lower and kinda kicking myself for not picking up an m1a instead. Seems like a cleaner no frills design that doesn't have a bunch of nooks and crannies to get shit into.

M1A is inferior in every way to an AR-10

I’m genuinely worried for you and want you to save money and time when I say this.
What brand lower? AR10s are more complicated with different upper/lower cuts

If you are a panicking panic purchasing panicker, make DAMN sure you know what AR10 version your lower is or your upper and mags will not match it.

There are guides online, go look for them.

Whatever you do build out of it can easily be customizable than any M14 for the money.

I agree that ar10 btfo the vepr, but the vepr is more reliable and less finicky so there's

How is a VEPR more reliable and less finicky than an AR pattern rifle?

I have fired both AK pattern and an AR-10 and the AK did feel much less finnicky

There is no "more reliable" or "less finnicky" than a good AR. Maybe a la creatura cheapest parts available mismatch build, but not a proper SR-25.

          A ~$1000 AR-10 would outperform a VEPR

People say the M1 Garand is the best battle rifle ever and it only had 8rds of .30'06
Well, the Kalashnikov design isn't too bad itself and you got 10rds of 7.62x54r in your rifle, so theres that.

The M1 design also predates the Dragonov by about 3 decades as was meant as a standard service rifle rather than a designated marksman rifle.
The M1 was also originally meant to utilize 10 round clips of .276 Pederson but MacArthur himself had it be changed to .30-06 for better or worse.

    >Regret
Don’t sell it; you’ve got a cool rare item. If you don’t like it you can try and buy some mags to modify. You’ve got a rare item that just looks cool
    Also
It’s lighter in weight which can help with control
