Why do so many virgin /in/cels cart massive heavy wood axes out to the bush when a sleek light length of sharp steel is all you need?
>Axes are heavy, cumbersome, not good for much
>Machetes are light, versitile, wood working power houses
Well /in/cels? Explain yourselves.
Both have their own respective uses you Idiot, threads like this come up every week.
Why do you think russian axes look different from german axes, who look different from american axes and so on? Why do cambodians use very long machetes whilst the burmese use Khukuris?
It's all thanks to regional differences in trees, terrain and wished usage. Hell, even different regions in germany alone have developed disdinct axe patterns according to their needs. Good luck felling an oak with a machete
Why the fuck would you be felling oaks?
Are we camping or cutting down dead trees in our backyards?
I always make sure to chop down a legally protected dead and dry tree every time I go outing. Makes for the comfiest campfires
It's called forestry, taking out trees with negative traits to promote growth in trees with favourable traits
which requires specialized knowledge and experience most people do not have. if every dickhead with 20 bucks for a folding saw started "managing" their local forest it would be a nightmare.
We spoke about forestry, not retarded reddit dickheads.
It's foolish to carry either tool bushwacking. I use a Lil Buck 5oz weight de-constructible saw by Qiwiz to saw log segments and then a smaller knife to baton if required. Less than a pound weight.
based
i use the exact same setup when backpacking and i swap the little buck out for a corona folding saw when booshcrafting
its about minmaxing for a specific task. sure i can us a blade instead of a flat head screwdriver and do the same job. just because it works dost mean it not a dumb/wasteful idea.
also, do you not know who wood splitting works ? like why an axe has a specific shape ?
>wood splitting
Machetes work pretty well at that. Not as good as an axe, but good enough. It's not like you're going to be cutting down large timber and splitting large logs with either.
There is no reason to cut lumber larger than a mecate can handle in the woods. If you're trying to stealth you're not going to build an off grid cabin and if you need wood fresh cut trees burn like shit and you shouldn't be using them anyways.
>if you're trying to stealth you're not going to build an off grid cabin
Moving the goal posts here, said nothing about stealth in the OP
>fresh cut trees burn like shit
True. But peak firewood is older fallen trees if you're not stealth camping. You try to cut and split an old dead tree to make yourself a comfy bonfire with your machete. I'll wait.
I always bring a big bow saw and a small ax if I'm not backpacking. You want to be able to chunk up bigger pieces of wood if your fire is going to be for fun and comfort and not just bare minimum utility
You can easily cut fallen trees with a machete. I've been doing it since you were in diapers.
Thankyou for emphasizing you have no idea what you're talking about and holy fuck you're a shit camper if you need that many tools to start a fire.
You're also retarded (or more likely not american) if you think pit fires are allowed in most national park trails.
Either you live in the jungle or you're a larping fuck. I live in the northeastern US where there isn't much leafy foliage to whack through so the main purpose of a machete is not needed. And we have state-managed public reserved land here that has fire pits, that's where I usually camp.
No, you don't need that many tools to start a fire. If I can just pick one tool I go with a folding saw like
said. But when I'm boating into the camp or just hiking a short way so weight isn't an issue yes I do bring the saw and axe, so me and my friends can all sit around a nice fire.
Again if you're telling me you routinely chop and split wood like pic related with nothing but a machete you're full of shit
>I live in the northeast
That explains everything. You told me two things--you don't know how to use a machete and you're retarded.
People who actually backpack are speaking--please stop rattling off your larp fantasies and your back yard fire pit delusions.
We have picture related in a plethora of specialized local shapes, and the best thing about it is that foreigners can't get it.
Manaressi parma is my favourite
Uh oh…
Fucking peasant
Mogs the shit out of your tool
Mostly good for pruning, the hook gets in the way otherwise.
skill issue
>Can't cut through a 4 inch piece of wood and look retarded while attempting
Nothing personal kid
Tell me you've never touched one without telling me you've never touched on.
this
I work with them regularly. There is simply more practical options for anything other than pruning.
>Tell me you've never touched one without telling me you've never touched a dick
You sound like a gay
Well, yes.
If you put me in the situation to choose one of those two for the rest of my life, im going to choose a machete.
But machetes sucks to do anything wood related, it is possible to use a machete to cut wood, but it just sucks.
>Machetes can't cut wood
This is your brain on axes.
Your reading comprehension is such utter shit.
I didnt say that.
Machetes can cut wood, but is a pain in the ass to do it.
But im giving op the reason, machetes can do what an axe does (even if its a pain in the ass) but an axe cant do what a machete does (cutting tall grass amd stuff like that)
Not anything significant. Imagine splitting even a segment of log with a machete.
It's 2023 my guy.
What is this? A mini reciprocating saw?
"Milwaukee M18 FUEL Hackzall" with a Diablo 12 inch rough cut lumber blade.
so thats where my catalytic converter went
I don't carry a cutting tool besides a small knife. Why would a hiker need an axe or a saw...
bow down to your master, machetefag.
The silky saw will bushwhack thorns and thickets better than a machete, with the added benefit of being able to cut logs faster then you can start a chainsaw.
Finally the correct answer. Why anyone uses anything besides a silky folding saw is beyond me. All different sizes and absolutely shreds through wood. Stop buying American garbage and just accept that Japanese craftsmanship is superior.
Go outside and find out
that exact folding saw on the bottom is the one i use
mother fucker shreds
These things are no joke, i don't know how the japs do it.
I sometimes prefer to saw chainsaw-tier shit with my silky even if my Stihl always starts in 1-2 pulls.
>i don't know how the japs do it.
by actually giving a fuck
jap saws are always ground, western saws (or more specific chink imports) are often nothing more than stamped teeth.
and in cutting geometry is the single most important factor
>i have never actually done anything meaningful PrepHole
>those who lived and prospered for hundreds of years did it wrong
turns out you're an idiot if you try to hammer screws too.
>Axes are heavy, cumbersome, not good for much
>not good for much
>not good for much
MATE THEY CAN DO EVERYTHING A MACHETE CAN DO AND MORE, FUCK YOU.
guarantee that machete pictured is heavier than the axe.
the axe can also act as a hammer.
>the axe can also act as a hammer
So can a piece of wood on the ground
But can the piece of wood split logs
fat bait
Axes are good if you live in northern Europe, Siberia, Canada or Alaska and all the wood is pine/birch, there's no brambles or vines between them to trip you up, and you need a ton of firewood before winter.
bush axes rape all of your choices + its a shovel + walking stick
>Digging with an axe
Wtf anon
>never used a bush axe as a pizza shovel
wtf does that even mean? explain
What are you guys doing PrepHole that you need any of this shit for? I need a knife and that is it, for processing deer and cutting cheese. What the hell are you all doing, are there not sticks on the ground you can use for a fire?
Two words
fun
Most people here are more interested in materials than the outdoors. When I was in the scouts we had wood stoves during the week-long summer camp.
>heavy
Post wrists
Axes are only good for heavy wood work
I've cut a bunch of young trees and shrubs with just my machete
Maybe use the right tool for the job, winter camping on private bush lot with a hot tent? I bring an axe and a saw in the sled. Hike in for a bowhunt? I bring a 12" machete I cut down to 9" for clearing the small shit out of my shooting lanes. camping with my kids in the summer and might do some fishing, whittling, etc? small fixed blade is plenty.
