Is there anything that makes this thing more special then your average T-72 variant?

      >basic M-84
Same as a T-72M just different name.
      >M-84A
Better engine, armor upgrade, laser range-finder, new FCS and night fighting equipment.
      >M-84B
Same as A just for Kuwait with a new intercom.
      >Serbian and Croatian post-Yugoslavia variants
Just more upgrades to the M-84A.

      >M-84

The upgraded variants Croatia and Serbia fields are sexy as frick.
They also have some neat upgrades, the Kuwaiti version has gunner day/night sights, computerised FCS and a laser range finder. All in all it's a bog standard t-72 derivative with some neat greebles.

Thanks, so it's not going to be one of the Russian unicorn T-72B3M, but still better then average.

How many of those bad boys does Ukraine get?

      Supposedly 100 Kuwaiti tanks

Idk about the others but the croat version has Israeli designed ERA, a RCWS and some fancy ballistic computer.

why does something as fundamentally shit as t-72 have such a long trail of derivatives and special versions? You dont see the m60 having such a simp army outside of those who got them for almost free back in the day

      Overwhelming quantity over quality

Because M60 users have actually upgraded to new chassis in the interim (mostly, but if you want an example of modernizing the M60 just look at Turkey and Israel) while braindead fricking morons like

      Overwhelming quantity over quality

and the failed states that use slavshit tanks to this day are stuck stapling more bricks to the outside of a cope model made specifically to be cheaper than the actually good frontline tanks the Soviets made. Even then, the typical Soviet apologist claim that it's some kind of gigabrain quantity over quality approach falls flat because their readiness numbers were never anything impressive. There was a very short window when the Soviet Ground force was able to threaten an invasion in Europe, when NATO readiness was at its absolute lowest... And then it passed, and no one has ever seen it again. Literally every facet of Soviet doctrine, from deep battle, to a supposed ability to conjure overwhelming numbers, to more recent cope about the Russian Federation's "lethal and unorthodox" style of battle involving intense electronic warfare and airborne rushes (deep battle rebranded for a country that no longer has the materiel to dream of deep battle) has been shown to be absolutely worthless on the modern battlefield. Flights of fancy from Soviet "military minds" who died happy that they never had to fight a real war without the American logistics chain holding them up. Cargo cult savages, and their shoddy equipment reflects this.

Because there was and is a metric assload of them, and despite their flaws are still the best bang for your buck you average thirdie country can get on a budget.

Combined with actually competent west-sourced upgrades it can be decent.

When it entered the international market in the 1980s it was a huge upgrade over other competitors like the M60, AMX-30, T-55 or Chink T-55 derivatives. And since Germany and the US weren't selling Leopards 2/Abrams back then everyone and their mother bought a T-72. Then once the USSR collapsed Russia continued upgrading it because T-64 production was now in Ukraine and the T-80 was too expensive for them to produce.

t-72s where sold or given as aid to a great amount of countries same as t-55 and ak 47 and as the rest of soviet gear they are simple to use
My country still uses m-84 left from the break up of yugoslavia since we dont have a lot of money

Same reason you have so many T-34 simps: the notorious History Channel documentary about the best tanks ever made with Tom Clancy. The T-72 was in the top 5 iirc and they presented it as some sort of 1970s wunderwaffe that only the best American tank ever could beat during Desert Storm.

Same reason you can to any parking lot in any central euro country and see a fricking gen V Volkswagen Golf with LPG installation, chink tablet with full apple car support, jerry rigged parking camera and new stereo speakers - there're many people that can't afford a new vehicle with all the latest gimmicks but at the same time are willing to spend some money to improve their comfort.

Looks like they will be transferred to Croatia where they will be overhauled by the industrial concern that made them, I wonder if it'll get any upgrades.

Btw 100 tanks is really not an insignificant amount, based Kuwait.

Just looked up the T-72 cannon firing. Those things don’t even have that recoil reducing thing (where the barrel recedes back into another).

Can it reverse faster than walking speed or did they keep the same transmission?

I believe they still have the same problem with reverse speeds. I can’t recall any T-72 variant that fixed this problem.

      >Can it reverse faster than walking speed or did they keep the same transmission?
This seems to be a constant problem in tank design, why is this such a hard problem to solve?

        >why is this such a hard problem to solve?
It's doctrine. Vatniks wanted a tank that can serve as it own recovery vehicle, so lower reverse ratio gives massive amount of torque. It's the same thing like trying to drive a diesel car out of a snow drift - instead of start at first gear and getting high rpm, you shift into second gear.
