Looks like Polish shopping spree is back on the menu...

>SEOUL, Sept. 16 (Yonhap) -- Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), South Korea's sole aircraft maker, signed a US$3 billion contract with Poland on Friday to follow up on an earlier basic deal to export 48 FA-50 fighter jets, Seoul's arms procurement agency said.

>KAI inked the "executive" contract with Warsaw's Armament Agency as a follow-up to the "framework" contract signed in July to supply the fighters to the European country, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration.

>Two Korean firms, Hyundai Rotem Co. and Hanwha Defense, have already signed the executive contracts -- worth US$5.76 billion in total -- to supply 180 K2 tanks in the 2022-25 period and 212 K9 self-propelled howitzers in the 2022-26 period, respectively.

>All three executive contracts are follow-up arrangements to the "framework" contracts in July that set the basic contours of the export deals.

FA-50 is selling like hotcakes recently. So what gives?

I assume a lot of that cost must include maitanance, training, spare parts, etc.

The US bought 24 F-15EX for $1.6B (roughly the same per-unit cost as the polish FA-50 contract). I assume that must be without maintenence, training, spare parts because the US already has that set up.

Too bad the US production lines for advanced fighters are so backed up right now or we'd probably offer Poland a good deal on the new F-15EX or maybe the F-16V

      RIP budget

We tried to negotiate for more F-16s but Lockhead is in the process of relocating the entire production line and F-35 orders are only possible after 2030.

Yeah I'm aware, Japan managed to sneak in their F-15Js to get upgraded to a Japanese F-15EX (F-15JIS). Most everyone else is being made to wait though.

Japan is strategically more relevant to the region than Poland is in Europe, so the priority for Japan makes sense. Europe has tons of NATO forces in Poland and nearby.

They donated most of their tanks and artillery to Ukraine, and currently they have very small air force if you don't count the Soviet shitbuckets

I agree, Hans, the Poles must be kept reigned in for.. uh.. regional security reasons. Perhaps we can work with the Russians to reach a favorable arrangement.

Isnt this just the 48 we already know about? Did they buy more or something?
There has been enough coping and seething about this deal.
Isnt the norway bid supposed to be announced soon? That should be a hell of a lot more exciting.

Let's put polacko-germanic seething aside. How much will they actually buy in the end. If all their demands were 100%, how many of those percent would be realistic purchases? 40%? 60%?

This, why wouldn't they buy gripen or anything else and not the fricking trainer.

WTF, someone pls tell me this is just an advanced trainer or something.

They're not buying this shit for combat....

The further procurement of F-35 and F-16 will follow. This is just a cheap-ish way to keep pilots in shape and train new cadres.

      What’s wrong with the planes?

It's literally a training jet that they decided they could put some missiles, a few bombs, and a gun on it and call it a "light" attack fighter.

Considering russia has no way of controlling the airspace in a conflict with NATO, what’s wrong with that exactly?
          it’s essentially a bomb taxi

Because if it does face off against a real 4th gen fighter it might not stand up too well.

At least the Block 20 version Poland is (mostly) buying has BVR capabilities.
            > On 28 July, KAI officially signed the deal for 12 FA-50 Block 10 and 36 FA-50PL Block 20 with the Polish government

Block 10 will likely be used as trainers unless shit hits the fan and they just need any airframe that can hold missiles/bombs.

So what are the practical differences between that and an actual fighter? Stealth capabilities?

Stealth, armor, internal weapons bays, integrated AESA/ECM and other more advanced combat avionics and EOTS type shit.

With what money? I don't think the German's are going to be able to subsidize Poland with the energy situation and the fact that their manufacturing is collapsing.

      >I don't think the German's are going to be able to subsidize Poland
I don't think you know how EU funds work, anyway poles will get in debt, they already created another budget outside of main one just to trick populace that the situation is not as bad as it really is.
      >Poland with the energy situation and the fact that their manufacturing is collapsing
Recession have started, next year will be hard but things will go back to normal.
