Get a cheapo chink set to start. As long as it's got a single pick and a tension wrench then you rally can't go wrong for baby's first pick set
If you're on more specialized stuff then I can't help you, I only pick when needed for the job and anything that can't be opened by a single pick, a rake, or a bump key get the drill or the angle grinder cause I can't spend all day fiddling.
There's plenty of reasons to learn how to pick locks beside being a Black person. Calling a locksmith is for plebs.
>I only pick when needed for the job and anything that can't be opened by a single pick, a rake, or a bump key get the drill or the angle grinder cause I can't spend all day fiddling.
Real locksmith detected.
I use a spring action pick at work all the time to open file cabinets that no one has a key to and often get locked by accident. It pops it open after 5-10 cycles.
>Lock picking lawyer shills hos own product.
Ok, so who wouldn't, especially someone well known for using said products?
If you made something, would you go on video every day and tell someone to buy someone else's' product?
If you're just starting, grab a couple different sized tension wrenches, pick, and rake. You don't need anything fancy. I've used paperclips to pick locks before. The lockpicking lawyer on YouTube is a great resource by the way.
Just came up with a money making idea
Couldn't you go to the bridges where couples put countless locks on the railings and pick all of the locks and sell the padlocks on?
Aren't those sort of padlock locks easy enough to pick or would a lot be troublesome?
how much time will it take you to pick all those locks? how much is your time worth?
how much does it cost to get keys cut?
how many keys will you need, assuming two per lock?
how much is one split ring per lock to hold all those keys?
Now, how much is a rando on craigslist willing to pay for a dirty old stolen lock? is it more, or less, than what it costs to get a bundle of new locks at the hardware store? is this more, or less, than the figure derived above?
I was never a licensed locksmith. But I've worked on, defeated and repaired more high security locks than any regular locksmith. As a convict in TDCJ-ID I worked in locks and doors. Picks and torsion bars merely speed up the process of non-conventional opening of a lock. Leave me alone long enough with any lock and I'll eventually get it open. Here's why: All locks are about giving relatively easy access to those with the key while hindering access to everyone else.. So fundamentally, locks are about GIVING access. You merely have to meet the locks conditions or defeat whatever force it takes to induce failure. I've picked "unpickable" locks. In one case, a three axis tubular key high security lock that was on a kitchen storage closet they stored all the knives. A guard accidentally locked herself in there by being a moron and breaking the key trying to get out. It took me nearly an hour and I had to make a couple of custom picks and tensioners with a file set and sheet metal. It takes patience and above all, the ability to feel the tiniest clues and changes as you probe, pick and gently move things. You must also have very high mechanical aptitude. Start simple. Easy to pick/defeat cheap locks. Get the feel, learn the basics. Every lock wants to open.. Even ones with broken keys or malfunctions like failed pin springs. Nastiest thing you can do is shove a tightly rolled up piece of aluminum foil into a keyhole.

Ok, LPL. Your picks are garbage metal from southern specialties.
If anyone is serious about lock picking/smithing, get a small selection of Peterson picks. Their steel is better than sparrows and the other, worse companies picks(south ord, hpc, chinkshit). Buy a hpc follower set, shims, a .005 pin kit, and basic hand tools. Learn rekeying. You can get a decent starter position at a shop that will give you plenty of little jobs to get you trained. But know that lock picking, in a worthwhile locksmith position, is almost never done. I've picked maybe 5 locks in the past 6 months. Shimming is a better way to get into a lock on the bench, and most of the time, at least in commercial jobs, you will have a master key or be replacing hardware. Auto locksmithing is moronicly expensive and not worth the investment. Safe cracking is fun, but not worth the time/investment. If you are doing this for hobbyist reasons, have fun. But if you want a job in this field, get good at sales and/or taking complex mechanisms apart and putting them back together. The installation aspect is all just measuring.
All picks break. I have had Chinese junk last longer than some others. Buy Southern Ord.. It is true that thickness matters. Fat or thin. Don't waste your time making picks. I have never got the temper perfect and they are bunches of work to make. Best have been made from machinist rulers. Hack saw blades, the worst. I made a key for some Victorian handcuffs out of a ruler. Had about 15 hours work in the $45. job. Turns out they didn't even want a key, just the frickers opened.
In my country its illegal to walk around outside with these, does anyone recommend a kit that comes with a BPA/phtalate-free container with all the basic tools that I can hide up my ass?
Seriously, though, PrepHole has been a honeypot for various government agencies for most of its existence. Everything is logged and recorded for reference, including poster identities.
If you are doing it for fun, then dont worry about being put on a list. There is nothing inherently illegal about lock picking. Many people do it for fun. To hell with any list you may or may not be on.
recommend a set? yeah, I recommend you set the stolen goods down and go home, Tyrone

Covert Commander.
If you are new, get cutaway lock picks and a transparent padlock.
If you do not learn the basics, you will regret lock picking.
If you want to start, go to Lockpicking Lawyer's website and buy a Lishi (Pic Very Related).
It's the best tool for picking and decoding locks, so you can do whatever it has to be done with said lock.
Also good for padlocks, but those are different models. Some models can even pick car keys and the such.
