Linus $70 chinese screwdriver

So this screwdriver has been popular on PrepHole after the guy trying to sell it tried to sell it with no warranty (Along with the $250 backpack).
Looks like the usual scam to make money reselling a product using your online popularity, what do you guys think? Project Farm is going to make a video about it soon.
Here is the "teaser", https://youtu.be/5LdLb6RbCBE
And here is a pointless 2 hour stream about it:

To be fair, China and the Chinese own half of the properties and most of the businesses in Canada, and half of the population is Chinese. It won’t be long till they have pretty much pushed out all the real Canadians.

Made in Canada and made in China are essentially the same thing

There is a reason the head Black person in charge of Canada legally blocked chinese from buying anymore properties.

I like how he was bragging that they went to a chinese factory over a taiwanese one, because it was easy to get into a chinese factory because of all the tariffs slowed their production way down.

    >Looks like the usual scam to make money reselling a product using your online popularity
He custom made the handle shape, then licensed out the ratchet system and bit holder from Megapro

If you are going to go luxury and spend $70 on a screwdriver, buy a fricking SnapOn
You you are going to spend $30 on a screwdriver, buy the Williams (which is SnapOn, made in USA and has the same exact mechanism inside as the SnapOn)

If $30 is too much, there are a ton of chinese branded ones in the 20 and less which are perfectly fine.

His only market is to his fans, which dont use screwdrivers all that much. And precision screwdriver sets are far better for PC building and repair.
Just because you can custom make some stubby bits with micro phillips heads and stick them in a full size screwdriver, doesnt mean I want to be pulling a laptop motherboard with that fricking thing.

I am interested in seeing the Project Farm video though.

Bingo. Its not a general purpose ratcheting screwdriver. I can appreciate having all the bits in the handle if I'm going to open a computer panel in the field so I don't have a separate case for the bits. I can appreciate a good knurling that isn't cast into the shaft. I can appreciate a lighter ratchet mechanism to spin with my fingertips only. I can also appreciate paying a little extra for a super strong magnet.

But he said its rated to something like 15ft/lbs, that means its not for automotive use, and after working on my house a little, probably not for around-the-house either. Its for non-corroded, fine tooth low-torque applications like installing a motherboard.

From the start I could tell that smooth plastic with zero texturing would be slick if you had gloves, if your hands are sweaty or its in a messy environment like its raining outside and you have 1 more screw to turn. He'll sell out of them immediately as he's touting it as a premium product, but the end user will tighten their PC screws twice a year and think its a good tool. I assume project farm will torque the frick out of it breaking bits, but I doubt he'll break the ratchet, I've had the same ratcheting screwdriver for 20 years now and its definitely well worn, but still turns screws even stuck in there.

        Anonymous

        >Actually applying 15 ft-lb with a straight-handled tool
Dude, voluntary wrist flexion torque is like 15 Nm or 11 ft-lb, at the tip of the bell curve (Yuichi Yoshii et al, 2015). You have other tools for more torque.

          Anonymous

Sometimes theres a tough screw, bolt, or whatever that just needs more torque. Are you going to get off a ladder, walk down to the garage, truck, or back to the tool shed to get a tool appropriate for greater than 11ftlb or are you just going to grunt and get the job done?

I'd have an impact driver on me in the situation you're describing. You don't want to do wood screw work by hand. Similarly, the impact driver tightens and loosens bolts.

I own a multi-bit screwdriver, but it's purpose is working on pic rel. Industrial gear makers never agree on what size or kind of drive to use for wire terminals, but the torque is usually light (unless you're doing high current shit).

In the first video of his I saw, he was complaining that the computers in their officers radiated too much heat inside. So he built a liquid cooling system where the radiator was outside. Makes sense, right? But he used copper piping, which he didn't realize is thermally conductive. By the time the water got to the radiator outside, it had already cooled down by radiating its heat through the copper pipes inside. And it was a ton of piping, which couldn't have been inexpensive.

he's clever in that he knows his market. Most may not be a part of said market, which is where the criticism is drawn. If anything, the advertising making it out of his sphere of influence is what has garnered so much attention from all the presumed haters, i.e. people who wouldn't buy a $70 screw driver on the merit of it being a screw driver alone.
He knows that it is merch, and even though I think it's moronic merch, it's far better than most memorabilia is and can actually be used as a tool.

        >Linus is a fricking tard who got first mover's advantage + lucky in establishing himself in web 2.0.
No, Linus has real talent at writing and hosting.

        Typical autist:
        >Today we're going to install Linux!
        >But first I should probably explain what GRUB is.
        >And before that I should explain the pros and cons of all the filesystems and tell you which one we'll be using.
        >but before that I'll go over the pros and cons of every formatting tool in existence to show you why I'm using the one I've chosen.
        >But before that I should explain what a bit is.
        >Oh, and it's not "Linux," it's really "GNU/Linux" because that's what Richard Stallman says! Let me fill you in on the meaning of Free Software and why you should only use Free Software and never touch anything proprietary!

Endless digressions and tangents do not make for a good video. You get lost in the weeds and never get anywhere.

Linus has a talent for starting in the right place, moving forward with it, to just the right depth that most people will learn something which he then explains succinctly.
Linus knows not to go into the weeds. He does not get millions of views because he lets that blond fatty monopolize a server video for 3 hours talking about configuring IPs. That gets edited down to a 30 second quick overview of how things were configured and then the video moves on.

"Being interesting on video" is not something that everyone can do. You could not put on a Gawr Gura avatar and get as many subs as her. You're just nowhere near good enough.
Some people are just born performers. Linus is one of them.

Linus and his channels have a lot of issues, but treatment of his workers and pay arent really one of them. He has only has like 2 disgruntled ex employees, while he employs some 50 people now. Many who have been around a decade.

I looked and one of the first links about wages was a reddit post from 7 years ago where they were offering $56k STARTING for an editor.

The housing market where they are located is a lot like San Fransisco.
Houses are insanely priced, and when you are working for something as volatile as a youtube channel, you arent going to settle down as the whole thing may not exist in 3-5 years.
Its exactly why silicon valley tech job guys all rent too.
They COULD afford a house, but its not really a great idea unless you are a decade old employee who is bought in and not going anywhere.

      And guess what?
His wife was independently wealthy (rich chinese immigrant who got an education and a well paying job) before they got married.
He spent years building a company from the ground up, he pays and treats his workers well, has a rich wife.
Is he not allowed to buy a house and do upgrades to it with his hard earned cash?

If you are going to work for a boss rich homosexual, would you rather be treated like cattle at SpaceX or would you rather party at somewhere like LTT?
His money has gone to his head and he isnt at all what he was even 3 years ago, but he's still far better than most new money business owners.

Those Vessel drivers were a little pricey but not much more than $10ea for an 8pc set, and they were an Xmas gift because I couldn’t pull the trigger on a set that expensive.

You make fun of tool marketing, by posting a toolbox covered in marketing stickers.
And you make fun of reddit reviews, when you are on record obsessing about said wera reviews.
And you say someone buys a brand because of youtube, when you went on a crusade buying japanese tools after watching an AVE video about a bunch of japanese tools (those vessels in particular)
And you imply the tools are new and unused, by posting a picture of your toolbox with a bunch of brand new unused tools.

It feels like bait, but in a "im just pretending to be moronic" kind of way hoping people shit all over you.

Frick Klein bullshit. Pic related is the worst wire stripper I've ever used. Looking at the reviews, I'm not alone.
Fricking screw keeps coming loose, the 'wire stop' is practically unusable and it doesn't even have a hook maker. What a load of shit.
Ironically, some cheap plastic chinese shit is the best cable stripper I've used.

I've heard people sing the praises of that style of wire stripper, but I've never been able to get them to work well compared to the kind with cutting blades.

          Anonymous

They're really good for thinner wires around 12-28awg, you just have to adjust the pressure accordingly, or rather than bothering with the pressure I sometimes just grab the wires and hold them against the left jaw. I agree that the wire stop isn't worth shit, but most other strippers don't have wire stops worth shit anyway.

i've found these are fantastic for anything in the 12-24 ga range, particularly if you are doing a lot of wires. it is just so much faster than manually stripping the wires. if you are only doing 2-3 wires it doesn't matter much but start doing a few dozen and you'll see why these are popular.
the stop isn't very good but it will only take a few wires to know how deep to put the wire in.

I don't get buying a manual driver for $70. My preferred drivers are much cheaper individually. The big B&D one was $20 probably 15 years ago. Lots of torque for getting into random shit. The skinny one, a Wow stick. was a bit expensive at $60 but it woks well for what I needed it for, small electronics with way too many screws.. Then the cheap manual drive with many many bits set is also useful for random shit. Less so these days now that I got the WS. My friend is going to print a case for the wow stick at some point.

Next you'll be telling carpenters to use hand drills

Show me the trades which use a 2.4v rechargeable electric screwdriver like pic related, which is powered by 2 rechargeable AA batteries.
It doesnt have a charger, the whole screwdriver has a flip out plug which you plug the whole screwdriver into the wall.

                Please enlighten me.

                Anonymous

First, the pic related was on topic of what I would use instead of a manual driver. You nitpicking a small powered driver shows your reaching for any kind of point. Obviously a full size drill would be the preferred choice in most applications.
I'm well aware of how these driver works, they work flawlessly.
In the rack integration center I introduced these drivers. When a technician was finished rack and stacking a 48U rack they have to secure each blade to the rack. This allowed them to not have to do so by hand. These little drivers have enough torque to properly secure the blade while not having too much to allow the screws to get stripped out. Additionally they are slow enough to prevent cross threading a bit better than the full size drill.
We had experimented with full size drills even going as far as locking the clutch at a lower level using a couple different methods however the contractor staff would inevitably cross thread or strip out blade mounting screws.
These little drivers so have worked wonders. We bought quite a few so techs can switch them out when the batteries go flat on a wall of plugs with them hanging. Sure it would have been nice to have a more modular approach with replaceable batteries but getting the bean counters to spend any money is a headache and a half.

I don't watch his content. He has obviously never built 5 racks in a row and then secured each blade. You build up some very large lower arm muscles. The electrics drivers helps a lot since contractors only work for three months and never have time to build up that muscle strength.

i don't like ratcheting screwdrivers, i think its a pointless gimmick. just something else to break. who seriously wants to have to twist a collar round to change which way they are screwing? this isn't like a ratchet handle doing a bolt in an engine bay where you literally can't turn your long handle 360 degrees to put tens of newtonmeters into a screw, this is a fricking screwdriver for building pcs.
secondly why the frick would you want a box of bits and a swappable bit screwdriver handle. here is a list of screwdrivers you need to do ANYTHING to a pc: pz2. THATS IT. you don't need a huge list of weird bits to lose. wow great all those stupid little bits made the handle huge so now you can't get in at a weird angle to do internal fan screws. haha good job.
70 fricking dollars absolutely insane. the most moronic shit i ever heard.
oh and make it completely black and the screws all black too so if you drop anything into your case its impossible to find.
just buy a normal screwdriver for $4, try a few different brands until you find one you like, don't worry about laser cut tips or any marketing bullshit you will use it for something moronic (certainly if you watch linus you will open tins of paint or scratch the inside of your anus colon with it) and frick it up anyway.
100% of people who say oh thi sis a bad screwdriver, oh it chewed the screw up is because they are using the wrong screwdriver head profile and cheap screws made of cheese instead of metal.
you don't need a lot of torque to do up pc screws, you don't need more than one single head profile, you don't need ratcheting action i absolutely guarantee that me or anyone could do up or undo a screw quicker and easier with a normal than a ratchet.
if you want to buy merch and hang it on your wall buy something good or useful not chinese knock off literal garbage crap lol.

Quite literally sounded like a 20 minute ad for the LTT screwdriver, even to the point of changing changing removing a category and omitting some test results so that the LTT screwdriver was rated higher
Funny how the megapro was almost identical to the LTT screwdriver in performance despite him on multiple occasions trying to convince you how much different they are

I love how Project Farm routinely talks about warranty, and talks about country of origin, but in this video he excluded both because it would make the LTT screwdriver look bad

I also love how he bought the $90 rubber overmolded Snap On instead of the hard handled $70 one which is the most popular and considered the gold standard., or how he bought the large PB Swiss kit that costs 144 with a bunch of bits instead of the driver with less bits for less money or just the driver (which in the EU is only like 60euro).
You know, to make them look far more expensive than the LTT screwdriver.
I also like how he didnt include the fact its over $20 to import it to the USA from canada.

Had a craftsman screwdriver on the table at the beginning, but didnt actually review it?
Didnt review an Amazon Basics screwdriver?
Took apart a few screwdrivers to look at the mechanisms, but didnt take apart the 2 most expensive ones which people might actually want to look at?

Looks like your bog standard, garbage project farm video right there.
I mean look at this screenshot.

At least post the actual graph. The one you posted was his example of excluding a category that doesn't matter for your use case.

            Anonymous

I didnt post the graph but still
            >The one you posted was his example of excluding a category that doesn't matter for your use case.
You mean, literally every single category on the list?

What use case would the rotational slop in a locked position matter?
Or the side by side shaft wobble?
Or even the swing arc on a straight shaft?

Its just like every other project farm video, stupid tests that dont mean anything in the real world. You didnt learn much of anything useful from them.

As always the test to failure meant literally nothing as they ALL are far stronger than youll ever be able to use them. And its not indicative of use over time.

Anyone who has any experience at all with ratchets will tell you backdrag is drastically changed by what lubricant you use. And you can make it heavier and lighter based on what oils you use.
And a light backdrag with light springs and thin oil will cause slippage as it wears.

Yet Project farm didnt tell a bunch of young PC kids that, he just used a talking point from the LTT screwdriver to pretend its something special or unique. Kind of the opposite of his usual vague "make your own conclusions from my ambiguous data"

He refused to show the mechanism of the SnapOn or the PB swiss which might actually have given people some insight on whether one may be better than the other.

I mean do you really want to spend $70 on a single pawl (stamped steel) ratchet system which is controlled by plastic (which their chinese factory repeatedly fricked up, and a mere .005" out of spec part made the screwdriver unusable).
It looks like something out of a dollar store ratchet.

As opposed to something like the SnapOns double sided 32t gear, with corresponding 32t gears that fully engages around the perimeter.
That would have been informative and may actually have helped the audience other than "well see its slightly different than the megapro, the LTT guys werent lying!"

Its about what weve come to expect from PF

              >Or even the swing arc on a straight shaft?
Do you even use tools? The first 2 are big annoyances with ratcheting tools.

                >The first 2 are big annoyances with ratcheting tools.
                Really?
Because literally the only one that matters in the real world is arc swing. And thats ONLY on a ratchet because it has a long horizontal handle that will hit things in tight spaces.
A minute difference in side shaft wobble doesnt matter, and the rotational slop again doesnt matter on a straight shafted tool.

Im starting to think you have never actually used a ratcheting screwdriver before.

Usually I like his videos but this one does seem off. The fact that he basically excluded durability is dumb. A screwdriver of this size is not a precision instrument, they are gonna get beat on a bit and need to hold up. I'd also be interested to see a durability test over time. Sure right out of the package they are fine, but how tight is everything still after 10k rotations. Gets my hackles up because the LTT driver does not look like it will do well in the durability category.

            Anonymous

the ltt screwdriver clearly has higher precision than most of the other brands (including fap-off, which is more expensive lmao). Honestly it's better than I expected and would definitely buy it if there was any point in stupid ratchet screwdrivers to begin with (which there isn't, not for me at least).

              Anonymous

That's kinda the point I'm making. It's a screwdriver so who cares about most of this stuff. I can see caring about the ratchet if it's a wrench but with a screwdriver I'm more concerned about durability and how the grip feels. Seems like there is not much of a point to it in the first place. As a fan of project farm I'm just worried about the fact that this review's tests and focus seemed very much catered to the LTT screwdriver.

                Anonymous

Well, it'll probably be about as durable as the megapro (ignoring possible late-life issues in the ratchet). I've had a True Grip banging around in a tool bag for a while and it's held up OK. I'm not about to drop it in a slurry of automotive fluids like TTC might, though.

          Sure
You can fit 6 regular bits in the rear bit holder
Too bad the 35$ mega pro can fit 12 regular bits in the back.

The proprietary bits are a selling point , the shortened the screwdriver just enough that you have to use their bits to hold more than 6!

            Anonymous

It's important to note that the megapro Todd tested was their standard ratcheting driver, which actually doesn't fit 12 standard sized bits. For that, you need the automotive ratcheting driver, which costs closer to $60 most of the time.

It is hard to tell the difference at a glance, they're both red and black.

They gave it a very fine ratchet too, with some plastic components. So that it can be used with minimal backlash while ratcheting.
I don't understand a precision ratchet. What's the point on small fasteners? All it will do is turn things into two handed operations to keep the ratchet from just moving it back and forth. Electric with a good worm gear on the other hand has torque when needed and can drive a broken fastener with a single hand.

I'm annoyed that he didn't include the megapro automotive ratcheting driver, which is what the LTT driver is most directly competing with. It'd be nice to see the difference between the magnetizing strength of the two, since the automotive driver holds 12x 1" bits.

        >Also i was curious about new snap on style compared to old vs linus meme.
Its not a "new" style, its the same exact ratchet with an overmolded grip thats been around for 20 years
Its no different than the hard handled one.

What moron said it was "new" or different?
Are people assuming its different because it had slightly more backdrag than the williams?
SnapOn uses Superlube Silicone Grease in all their ratchets which gives a very smooth and reliable backdrag.

The williams doesnt obviously since they always sound way dryer. But the actual mechanism is the same.

Reminder that all the brands Todd tested would give you a replacement when their screwdriver fails except for LTT.

Reminder manual screwpoles don't benefit from toolroom precision. They exist to use common standard bits and are for non-production use (because RSI is bad).

Reminder the handle full of bits design is inferior to separate bit holders/racks enabling instant visual selection and a shitload more bits including styles too long for handle carry. That's why my handles are empty and holders full.

Reminder Linus buyers are normies looking for boutique experience buying old growth plastic and organically grown steel with bespoke curated plating done manually by ninjas whose Chinese dojos date to ancient times or about six months, which ever is shorter. Their requirement for the utmost in technical wokeness gave US a screwdriver to rival the finest swords in craftsmanship ("craft" includes mass production in small facilities whose skilled workers don't need OSH rules since they are not the Old Ways) for which PrepHole should be externally grateful.

I have no idea why anyone would need a ratcheting screwdriver. I have a small multi-bit Kobalt screwdriver with the end of its handle being a rotatable hard plastic piece, and it works just fine for me. The rotatable end means I can grasp it in the palm of my hand and I can rotate it infinitely using my fingers instead of having to constantly adjust my grip. Ratcheting screwdrivers are fricking overkill. At least electric screwdrivers are justifiable if you work in a repair shop or for one of these tech channels where you're assembling thousands of computers over the span of a single year.
The warranty thing is ridiculous too. Maybe LTT is hoping people will use the screwdriver so lightly (The case for 95% of the buyers, who just want something that looks cool instead of an actual tool that improves efficiency in thousands of instances of use) or that it will be relegated to a drawer forever so no one complains about it.

a normal tool company and ltt do business in two entirely different ways. a regular tool company wants to make a sell the same regular product for years and years to maximize profit long term. ltt is front loading their sales with hype because they're an adverting company and thats what they do.

is is a good screwdriver? idk and frankly it doesnt matter because im going to go with an actual tool company every time. i can trust that they'll still be selling tools in 5 years

      >a regular tool company wants to make a sell the same regular product for years and years to maximize profit long term. ltt is front loading their sales with hype because they're an adverting company and thats what they do.

      This.
Linus Tech Tips has convinced a bunch of people who dont know better to spend $70 on a $35 ratchet based on hype.
And the hype is for stuff that regular manufacturers would never waste money on, making the ratchet less reliable.

Putting a plastic shim around the shank so it has less side to side movement doesnt improve anything, its an unnecessary cost that doesnt improve the tool, and will eventually wear and cause drag.
Putting in extra plastic pieces and over complicating the selector mechanism just to reverse it?
More parts, more money, more things to go wrong, designed with to a high tolerance which the factory had issues getting it to spec. Took them 6 months to figure it out.
Shortening the standard handle by 1/2" which forced them to custom order short bits that are nonstandard, and hampers the one selling point of the megapros bitholding system.

He autistically changes a bunch of things that dont improve the actual usability of the screwdriver, while also making them twice as expensive and far less reliable in the long term.
And he's convinced people this extra "attention to detail" is a good thing, when in reality its an expensive detriment to the actual screwdriver.

the ltt screwdriver clearly has higher precision than most of the other brands (including fap-off, which is more expensive lmao). Honestly it's better than I expected and would definitely buy it if there was any point in stupid ratchet screwdrivers to begin with (which there isn't, not for me at least).

      >(including fap-off, which is more expensive lmao)
The SnapOn is literally the same exact price, Its actually cheaper if you live in the USA and arent paying import shipping from canada.

I don't really see how it helps with that when it ratchets in both directions but okay, a valiant attempt at a burn

The only use I can think of is if you need one screwdriver that can do everything. But I have enough space in my tool box for dedicated crosshead/slotted screwdrivers in 6 different sizes and I rarely encounter any torx bullshit or "security" fasteners so I don't need it.

        >ratcheting =/= multi-bit
Still multi-bit drivers have their advantages. Not having to carry a toolbox when you don't know what driver you'll need, not having to buy an entire driver for rarely used fasteners, and not having to buy an entirely new driver if a tip gets damaged

The whole reason the SnapOn ratcheting screwdriver got really popular is its widespread use in the automotive world.
You are working in the interior of a car and dont need to have a whole screwdriver set by your side.

Why some PrepHoletards who put in about 15 phillips screws in total to build a desktop PC feel the need to have one, I dont know.
Especially since its a full size screwdriver, which you wont actually be able to repair a laptop or other similar devices with.
Youd use a precision screwdriver for that.

And today MANY hex head fasteners.

I cannibalized whole interiors at a used car lot (tedious but easier than it looks) and relied on my 1/4" drive six point metric socket set with extra (LONG to clear panels and structure) extensions and universals. Find your most common fastener to be sure you've the right socket (Ford trucks use many 7mm).

^These also force the bit into the fastener. Back when motorbike engine covers had Phillips screws there was one in every bikers tool bag because they work better than even an impact gun. Impact guns turn fasteners but do not force the bit inward.

Other than for adustments (carbs etc) or computers (using israeliteelers screwdrivers mostly) conventional manual screwdrivers are handy but far less useful than alternatives that don't give you RSI. Small impacts and cordless screwdrivers work far better.

If your takeaway was anything but "its a fricking $70 chink ratcheting screwdriver without a lifetime warranty, which had a bunch of insignificant things tweaked that dont increase actual usability while hurting reliability", you are a complete moron.

      >You already decided before you watched it.
I watched the actual videos explaining the development of the screwdriver with all his talking points. That should be enough for any actual PrepHoleer to have realized it was a sham. He spent 10 minutes talking about the expensive designer box it comes in, and the "sound" of the ratchet (which sounds like a cheap dry chink ratchet to me)

The second I heard it was out of a chinese factory and I saw the pathetic warranty, there was literally nothing that Project Farm could do (and he very clearly tried) to make it worth the money.

      > Control your autism.
The only autism is trying to defend the "tweaks" done to the ratchet as worthwhile, and somehow worth paying $70 for

For anyone who actually uses tools, its a big fricking joke.
