Let's talk optics

I'll be purchasing an APC 308 or SCAR 17 soon and want a high quality option that matches the versatility of a battle rifle. Something decently affective at range without much compromise in a CQB scenerio. I was considering a red dot/ holo with a magnifier like the eotech hhs but not sure if I'd be better off with a LPVO

I have a Leopold Firedot LPVO on my AR10 and Im very happy with it. Idk about cqb but the lpvo suits my shooting well

Do you notice the weight at all?

A little bit, yeah. The build quality seems pretty solid, but ofc that means a difference in weight that isnt negligible, but not too bad

I was hoping to avoid the weight and bulkiness of a true scope optic

Or really any lpvo made by LOW in japan.

Everything else is pretty much dogshit.

Is a lpvo better than a red dot/holo with magnifier though?

I'm eyeballing these because their 1-6x offering is a good $300 cheaper than Vortex's similar offering. Even if the lenses aren't quite as good, if the turrets and internals are as tough as the Razor has been, I'm fricking sold.

It's fricking ridiculous that the only sub-$1000 LPVO with some solid guts and true 1x is a fricking lackluster 1-4x from Trijicon.

that niche being killing dinosaurs if they walk upon the earth again.

        CQBR: Mk18, 300blk
        GPR: 11.5 - 16 AR
        SPR: 16-20 inch AR
        DMR: 16-20 inch 308/6.5

A battle rifle serves the niche of hunting big foot or t-rexs.

a SCAR-17 can do any of those things without much issue.

I don't understand the hate that vortex gets, I've had multiple and never had any issues. They've never failed despite many heavy hits on hunting trips. They aren't overpriced and they're always crystal clear. I don't get it am I a unicorn?

I have a TA11 on my SCAR 17 and I like the setup and am hopeful the ACOG quality will hold up to SCARs tendency to destroy optics. If I planned on using it for CQB (I don't) I'd piggyback an RMR.

Barring the TA11 I'd probably go for a VCOG 1-8

I considered an acog but I feel like trijicon doesn't really push the envelope with innovation and instead has relied on the same design premise for the last 25+ years

Absolutely true, they came up with a system that works and have just been building variants since. But, it works.

nrch buyers are morons. smart people who buy good optics only buy older scars anyways.

eh the CH gets annoying depending on what position youre shooting in but that price increase is fricking gay

I'm in the same boat trying to buy for a Scar and a new AR 15 I'm building.

What type of optic makes the most sense for a weapon that can send a bullet 600 yds, but is not inherently a precision platform? My gut tells me something like an ACOG, durable, relatively light, able to get minute of man out as far as the rifle can reasonably be pushed. Speaking for myself, how often am I likely to be adjusting the windage on a 1-10 LPVO for minute calibrations?

The idea of dropping 1500 on a 4x / RMR combo that has similar magnification and probably similar short and long range performance as a 300 dollar LPVO is galling though.

Yea there's the TA44 which comes in at around 7 oz everything else seems significantly heavier though. And at 1.5x it doesn't really seem worth the weight when you can get a eotech hhs for less money, 3x or even 5x magnifier while only weighing 2 more oz. The only really disadvantage is batteries but they're really not hard to replace about once a year or so.

If you’re asking what optic to put on a Scar you’re not going to want to put a 300$ LPVO on it.

I have a NF 1-8x and an TA31, I like both but prefer the TA31 because of its simplicity. You can shoot to 500 with a 4x, it’s just going to be significantly easier with a 8 or 10x. If you have a .308 scar and are concerned about 500+ yards I’d recommend a 1-8 or a 1-10.

For the 5.56 AR I recommend a TA31 or TA11 (if you can’t deal with the eye relief). It’s an extremely solid, clear, crisp optic and coupled with a dot you have the best of both worlds.

Yeah I didn’t make it clear but it’s a 308. Yeah, I think a high power LPVO is probably the way to go, I’ll probably hardly ever shoot 400+, but I don’t know if my autism can take knowing the capabilities of the gun exceed the optic, even if it is purely academic. The other thing that pulls me back from an ACOG is the whole BDC calibration thing, but I don’t know how big a deal it is in practice.

          Anonymous

The BDC calibration is important but most BDCs have a guide to what load/barrel length combinations require what zeros in order to line up with the BDC. For example my zero right now is 1” higher at 100yrds than normal to account for the load I’m using. This makes functionally no difference until you get out to 400+ yards.

can anyone recommend a scope mount for a tikka t3 tac in the $200-250 price range? the mpa one is on backorder and sphur and mdt are too expensive.

just buy a used elcan. 1/4x or 1.5/6x.
