Let's say you are playing Russian roulette
There is one single bullet
There are 6 players
All you get to do is point the gun against your head and pull the trigger once
Meaning that one person will die
Is it better to be the first player or the last player?

When it's my go I pull the trigger 6 times, I win, get fucked losers

Statistically, the first one has a 1/6 chance, the second has a 1/5 chance, then 1/4, etc
Simultaneously, if you go last, there's a 5/6 chance that someone already blew his head off
First or last are the best bet, third or fourth would be worst

At the start statistically they all have a 1/6 chance. That doesn't change until one or more shots has been fired and we learn additional information from it. Since we are asked to make the decision with zero shots having been fired they are all of equal risk.

then the only player to really have 1/6 is the first one since he is the only one who gets to make a choice without previous information

nta, but there's 5/6 chance that the chance for the second person is 1/5 and 1/6 chance that the chance for the second person is 0.
Meaning the net chance is still 1/6.

          5/6 * 1/5 + 1/6 * 0 = 1/6

For chances of survival? Depends on the revolver. Some revolvers are so well weighted that the cylinder always stops bullet down.
For the philosophical implications? Man's death is everyone's problem but his.

    last player

every other player won't know with any certainty whether their shot is loaded or not (ignoring how you can like, see the bullet in some revolvers), but you going last will always 100% know you have a loaded gun

and at that point you have a loaded gun and nobody else does so what the fuck are they going to do, make you have a nice day?

This, any other answer is horseshit

I'm still not exactly sure I understand just what happened in the Black Ops 1 russian roulette cutscene though. Was Woods telling you where the bullets are or where the guys behind you are?

Yeah, I think he saw what was in the cylinder and was telling Mason he had the shot.

the game ends when somebody gets shot so if you're the last player and the game reaches you, you know you're going to die. so if you can quit, last player.

If you are the last player it mean you died.
Because the game cannot continue without a bullet.

It does not matter if you go first, second or last.
If you die, you are the last player.

Do you reroll the cylinder between players?
    It fucking matters!

you usually only roll again when the bullet will be shot for sure next trigger pull

  10. 4 weeks ago

    Statistically, it literally doesn't matter.
First player has a 1/6 chance to blow his brains out.
Second player has a 1/5 * 5/6 = 1/6 chance (since he rolls 1/5, but only if previous player rolled 5/6 for an empty slot).
    Third player has 1/4 * 4/5 * 5/6 = 1/6 (rolls 1/4, but only if previous players rolled 4/5 and 5/6).
Every player has exactly 1/6 chance to die.

Of course, that only affects the actual total chance of survival.
Every next player has increased a posteriori chance to die by the time it's his turn to shoot, culminating in probability of 1 for the last player, who knows he's going to kill himself for sure when he pulls the trigger.
So psychologically speaking, it would probably be easier to go the first.

That said, the canonical way to play the game is to spin the cylinder before your turn, making it a 1/6 chance every time and allowing the game to last for multiple cycles, until one dies or players get bored and stop.
In which case your chances of survival are optimal if you go last.

They should play reverse Russian roulette in suicide wards, where there's five bullets instead of one and the unlucky person is forced to survive until the next game

By know you should've seen enough of Russia to know that the one who dies IS the actual winner in the original version.

I think I'd want to go 5th. my odds of being the one to die are the same no matter where I sit, but 5th gives me the highest chance of not having to go, without the risk of ever being 100% certain I got the bullet.

When you sit down at the table you have a 1/6 chance of walking away again. Regardless of where you sit. It doesn't matter if you go first or last, it's still 1/6.

With every consecutive player, chance that he'll get a turn decreases, but the chance he kills himself if he does increases.

With every consecutive player, chance that he'll get a turn decreases, but the chance he kills himself if he does increases.

It cancels out, it's always 5/6. From the moment you enter the game you have a 1/6 chance of death.

    Last is best
Consider a revolver with 1000 or maybe even 10,000 slots and 1 bullet vs the usual one with 6
If you sit last, there is a next to zero chance of dying
The gun probably won't even get to you
