Let's assume for some reason that firearms stop working or can't be used or whatever. Dick wizard casts a spell on our universe and guns don't work.

What sort of weaponry/armor would we turn to, considering our current material sciences? PVC plate armor? Carbon fiber rapiers?

        1. there are guns far cruder than the best crossbows. Guns are medieval technology.
        2. You have to define what a gun is. Is every weapon accelerated by an explosion a gun? If you set an over filled propane tank on fire and the nozzle blows off and goes through your thigh, is that a gun? Is a flamethrower a gun? What about a hose? does it become a gun when it shoots fire? What if I have it shoot paint?

If we cant have airguns, is there artificial gas pressurization of any kind? if so, can we pressurize poison gas? Does a fire extinguisher disintegrate if you spray someone with it? Being sprayed with a fire extinguisher is very debilitating, it chokes you.

These, but with actually powerful bows and with electrical motor for loading. Currently among the strongest crossbows is tenpoint nitro xrt 515 which puts out ~340j/242fp at 515 fps. Just read on some random bow forum discussion that compounds have around ~70% mechanical effciency. Motors and loading systems added it comes to around 600-1000 joules. That's 1/6th of a watt hour(you can get 200 wh/kg batteries). Basically only added weight would be from a motor and pulley system. Wish someone actually went trough with it and built one.

Also arrows might have to come with really light shaped charges since those energies aren't enough to go through modern specifically engineered body armor that could be light enough to nearly completely cover a person.

Can we talk about the spell a bit more? What would be the best way to word this? I was thinking something along the lines of:
        >Men can only be harmed by laws of gravity and time, sickness and trauma, as well as from energy produced, given off, or stored organically
This should allow for bows and even crossbows. It would make flamethrower potentially legal though but someone is always going to cheese the system.
        Maybe just:
        >cannot be harmed by energy directly from non-organic / chemically refined materials
Personally I'd be okay with allowing compound bows and such.

    Missles fully replace artilery.
    Suicide drones remain.
    Airpower remains sans gatlings.
Tanks now carry and fire mini-missles.
IFVs are a bit fricked, but I imagine some ways to frick up a lot of light targets are still possible
Urban Warfare changes completely - probably more demolitions in order to avoid autistic melee slaughters. Infantry in general is now more elite, since safe engagement is kind of impossible. Also flamethrowers.

    Military:
Explosives. Big time. Primary weapons would be grenade launchers, or, failing that, grenade-arrows launched by bows. Possibly chemical weapons too.
Close range weapons: (not quite backup, because explosives at close range are a bad idea for obvious reasons) melee weapons, swords and etc. The single handed sword would probably be preferred for urban fighting, and otherwise a two hander or polearm.

    Civilian shit:
For self defence, single handed swords, for getting jumped.
For home defence, you get a bit more warning and possibly more open space, so larger melee weapons (e.g. two hander or spear) are practical, but also bows/crossbows.

Picrel is mine. Bought it because (1) cool af (2) post apocalypse and I only need to charge one gun-tard before I too have guns, where meanwhile I can buy this shit off the internet 100% legally and never worry about ammunition.

Seriously? How'd they compress the air? How'd they manufacture the pressure vessels? I don't want to diss seventeenth century blacksmiths, but the manufacturing tolerances are pretty tight.
Also they would have had to figure it out through trial and error, since they didn't have a theoretical understanding of what air even was.

A lightweight crossbow as a primary weapon with a decent slingshot for emergency use if the crossbow breaks and molotov wienertails for area of effect attacks.

Why would people not wear better armor and use better crossbows?

        Anonymous

Because riot armour is designed against stabbing, slashing, crushing and burning not firearms that don't exist in this thread.
As for crossbows the heavier the draw weighs the faster they break and the user gets tired unless a really good electric wienering system was developed.

          >Because riot armour is designed against stabbing, slashing, crushing and burning
Riot armor is designed to be cheap and made of plastic, it's inferior to plate armor in literally every way imaginable you homosexual.

            Anonymous

That totally depends on the armour used, if it's a UHMWPE it's pretty damn good, remember riot armour has to be used against a completely different threat from firearms, someone stabbing or crushing you so therefor plastic based armours are way better.
I think the old Commie shitholes used a load of basic plastic and metal, cheap shit but a load of countries use a lot of the thick compounds which are very good.
In my country sadly the pigs use way better gear than the military so they get the good shit and it's still plastic!

Pike blocks would be third world shit, since there'd be nothing to protect them from mine-flayer tanks or airdropped, titanium-clad American men-at-arms. I could see this as whacky chariot warfare. I disagree somewhat. Guns are disabled but we still have flamethrowers, missiles, explosives, white phosphorus, and all kinds of nasty chemical and biological weapons. While armored hand to hand combat will almost certainly make a comeback I'd bet that general warfare is about to get a whole lot nastier. Steam or pneumatic catapults, gas projectors, sling artillerists throwing WP and HE shells, incendiary musketeers-- imagine the worst parts of medieval and Renaissance warfare if Leonardo was a Nazi scientist with an unlimited budget. And of course we still have bombers and tanks.
