Am ru anon. Don't know what you expected to hear? I only kno that there was initial group of like 180k, than they moobilized, but mobilization also pressganged those who finished their conscription service to continue serving, iirc. That's some 150k somewhat competent soldiers(still of shit quality and probably less than that survived the initial push since they were used in ukraine proper as well as guards for backline logistics). Also there should be another such wave of those that were conscripted in spring(same applies)

      Absolutely correct but understated

      150k at start of war
      100k reserves committed
      both regular army left 100k

300k mobiks, trained between 0-3 months
left 100k fighting and another 100k about to start, now attacking soledar and bakhmut

now 500k mobiks, barely trained again

Not counting prisoners, this is 250k casualties/captured which is exactly the number given by bongs.

The difference is that not you need significantly more stuff to equip an infantry company in order to make it combat effective. Giving every soldier a rifle, 5 magazines and 300 rounds of ammo is not sufficient. You need optics, coms, beltfeds, company level mortars, supply vehicles and a lot more ammo per day. And that would still be like WW2 standard.
If we are talking post WW2 high intensity warfare, the rifles are the least of your concern.

Turns out if you've blown through your tank and IFV stockpile, and the enemy can murder all of your trucks at will, you can get around it by forming rifle divisions. Like the Soviets did in 1941. Rifles are handed out, fresh production or from stockpile, you give them whatever fire support weapons you can come up with (RPG series now, things like watercooled machine guns/mortars/infantry guns back in WW2), flood the place with whatever relatively light direct/indirect fire cannons you can find (I suspect we're going to see some old, and I mean OLD, Soviet weapons come out of this) and hold the line until you can start up IFV production and build up armored/mechanized divisions. These units won't do maneuver warfare, but they don't have to. By virtue of having tons of men they're hard to get through unless you have overwhelming armored support.

I suspect if this keeps going we're going to see a return to relatively old (by western standards) weapons, think KS-19s and the like. I doubt Russia could shit out hundreds of T-72s at short notice but I think they can sort out artillery.

        Anonymous

        >but I think they can sort out artillery.
Ukraine has the NATO-designed equipment that was literally designed to counter masses of old Soviet artillery.

The entire reason why all the NATO 155s have high mobilty, MRSI capability and datalink to counterbattery radars is delete the masses of toweed/unprotected artillery the Soviets had.

          Anonymous

Yes anon, but they don't have very much of it and it's not being used in the types of units NATO planners envisaged. At the moment M777s are being used like normal artillery and HIMARS is being used both in its intended role and as a substitute for aircraft. We're not going to see the proper rape until Ukraine gets the M109s and attaches them to a trained mechanized unit. I expect to see this around July.

          >I doubt Russia could shit out hundreds of T-72s at short notice but I think they can sort out artillery.
Not in terms of ammunition which will be the real limiting factor. Early in the war they burned through huge amounts of artillery ammo to compensate for their manpower disadvantage, now they are having to ration it to sustain the war. The thing with poorly trained and equipped conscripts is that they're shit for offensives but help a great deal in terms of simply being able to man the whole front. If you're constantly throwing small attacks at your enemy, no matter how poor the attacks are, your enemy is forced to keep defenders there and to use up ammunition. It can also disrupt enemy plans for future offensives in the area, which is exactly what Russia is trying to do in Luhansk oblast.

Honestly artillery shells are relatively simple to make compared to armored vehicles or aircraft. I don't think there's much public information about Russian efforts here but considering the US has been dumping money into artillery shell production and Ukraine has been starting up entire new factories, I can see Russia doing it too.

As for your point about manning the line, yes I agree. That's mostly the point. It worked in WW2 and I'm assuming the Russians have either convinced themselves it will work again or have just run out of ideas. Either way if they're going to do it we'll end up seeing the full scale of losses achievable when you put a static conscript army filled with rifle divisions up against an enemy conducting maneuver warfare. If you think 100,000 dead is a lot now, just wait.

            Anonymous

The Ukrainians KNOW the Russian playbook, probably better than the Russians know it themselves. They can run rings around these poor lost circus performers.

Russian conscripts lack the basic competence to do any kind of real maneuver warfare, and their local commanders lack the authority to exploit facts on the ground. Ukrainians will simply outmaneuver the Russians.

On top of this, Ukrainians actually WANT to fight Russians. They are really pissed off.

              Anonymous

Yes, we know all of this anon. That doesn't mean there isn't a discussion to be had about how Russia could form new units and fight.

                Anonymous

Forming units is one thing. Finding the officers for them is another.

A ton of Russian junior officers and NCOs are already dead, and so are their trainers.

                Anonymous

Trips of truth. Training leaders is way more time consuming than training grunts and there is substantially less capacity to do so. How many LTs would Russia have to train, what is the capacity of their officer schools and how long does basic officer training take?

                Anonymous

There absolutely should be discussion about that. My questions would be how Russia plans to house, train, equip, supply and lead these people. Handing out AKs and two combat loads of ammo does not do the trick.

It’s not about the shells, fuzes are the bottleneck.

              Anonymous

Elaborate please. I know a bit about the different types of fuzes and the production of the VT fuze in WW2 but other than that I'm clueless. What sort of ratio are we looking at between shells and fuzes (so how many shells can I produce in a given amount of time vs how many fuzes?) and what sort of investment would be needed to up fuze production vs shell production?

                Anonymous

The problem is that fuzes are relatively high tech compared to shells. You need different levels of quality control, higher skilled workers and different machinery. This machinery needs more maintenance which again requires more highly skilled workers. Scaling up shell production is substantially easier than scaling up fuze production.

i think its largely because these regions have been molded by centuries (millenia) of despotic, "infallible" rule. they lie because they feel like it makes them look better and no one can stop them.

europe turned out different because of the plague killing so many peasants. peasants bargaining for rights essentially ended extractive economies, weakened rulers and created the middle class, which in turn created a bit of accountability in the system. russia and china never had the plague, so their leadership was free to enact whatever on their peoples. and that coincidentally is why they generally suck at everything

500,000 is almost 2% of Ukrainian pre-war population, including old people, children, women. And for Russia, it's less than 0.4% of it's population, which is a bit younger than ukrainian and is still rising due to higher fertility rates and net migration surplus. Sad to admit, but if Russia actually manages to mobilize so many soldiers, the future of Ukraine seems bleak. A few dozens of Bradleys and Marders won't radically change this situation in Ukraine's favor, Ukrainian army needs not only IFVs and trucks, but also MBTs and aircraft, hundreds of these.

Did anybody calculate how many BTRs you would need to form motor rifle batallions with that many people? Even if you just use 100k as combat troops, that would be ridiculous numbers of vehicles. How are they building, fueling, maintaining, arming and servicing them?
