This pic is from a pamphlet published about 100 years ago. I think the title is “Going Light,” or maybe “Camping Light.” Notice the weight. The idea that saving weight is a new concept is simply wrong, but so is the idea that we need modern materials to do so.
I think the image we have of the over-burdened Backpacker acktyually comes from soldiers who carried everything they needed to live outside while fighting a war at the same time. It could also be from the late 1970’s and through the 1980’s, when recreational backpacking really hit its modern stride. It was the blind leading the blind, where everyone thought the mega-heavy pack with stuff swinging from the back was just a part of hiking because that’s what every other idiot was doing.
The swamp was cursed so the bugs didn't like it at all. Mosquitos also didn't show up until the third age so the protection spell Gandalf put on the Shire was enough to keep out the already small population of mosquitos.
It's all explained in the Silmarillion.
>The Shire to Mordor: It's 1779 miles (2863 km) from the Shire to Mordor following Frodo and Sam's journey. If you walk three miles every other day, it will take you 20 weeks (about 4.5 months) to reach Weathertop and complete your challenge.
>Te Araroa is New Zealand's long distance tramping route, stretching circa 3,000 kilometres along the length of the country's two main islands from Cape Reinga to Bluff.
read the books for frick sake. frodo is carrying sting, bilbo's knife/sword that he found around the troll incident, and sam, merry and pippin also have daggers that are swords in their hands
Yeah. I need eagles to haul my fat hobbit ass home.
Did they sleep out in the open? I don't even remember LOTR it's been so long since I've read the books or watched the movies.
Nah, they booked AirBnBs along the way.
A tarp and some twine would be nice to keep the rain off if I’m sleeping on the ground under a wool blanket.

I may have read that too. Did it talk up the superior modern technology of an oiled silk tent?
>oiled silk
That’s tech from the 18th century (probably earlier), not the 1920’s. The pic says the material the shelters are made from.
or maybe because the soldiers didn't have to pay for their own gear

>pyroxylin tent
Isn't pyroxylin a form of nitrocellulose, making that thing extremely flammable?
Its a tent made out of flash paper. Creating a more moronic construction takes effort.
Is middle earth free of mosquitoes? I don't remember any in either the books or the movies, even though a lot of it takes part in swamps.
Makes sleeping outside with minimal and retro gear a lot easier.
Midges were on scene when they journeyed East of Bree.
just a lack of mosquitoes is enough for me to fantasize living in middle earth

on the same vein, i need an adventure in my life that feels similar, any tips?

That's ... not a lot.
Math is wrong. 1779/(20*7) = 12.7 miles a day over 20 weeks. Or 26 miles every 2 days.
I just copied and pasted from the internet, I didn’t do the math. I live in a metric system country.
Damn, imagine missing the point by this much.
how does he camp and pass through snow and rain like this
I think that loadout is sufficient as long as you have lembas
Oh hey guys, OP here.
Also, I'm a troony
I need my $200 pocket knife!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did they even carry knives?
read the books for frick sake. frodo is carrying sting, bilbo's knife/sword that he found around the troll incident, and sam, merry and pippin also have daggers that are swords in their hands
I obviously wasn't counting the swords Anon for obvious reasons.
yes I need at least a walker colt and an 1860 henry rifle
