can any euros answer me on this but when you have the royal family in the military do they technically outrank everybody? Do they exist outside of the normal command structure? As a commander I would find it pretty difficult to have the heir to the monarchy serving as a normal LT.

No, they don't outrank anyone while in active service, their rank is whatever it is and their tasks are accordingly. Where they differ from mere mortals is reserve promotions that are in almost all European countries just honorary and not substantive. Purely for ceremonial purposes and tradition.

Current king of Netherlands Willem-Alexander for example did his conscript military service in navy, got reserve officer training, left service as ensign, did some refresher training later on and got promoted to lieutenant. Since then he has been promoted every few years in reserves. Now he is commodore, rear admiral lower half for burgers and he has received equal ranks from air force and army for ceremonial purposes.

For another example of blue blood with bit more military service there is prince Andrew, duke of York. He did 22 years in Royal Navy. Mostly as helicopter pilot, but as lieutenant commander he was commanding officer of a mine sweeper and bit later on commander of a helicopter squadron. He retired in 2001 as commander, after doing last couple years of service in naval diplomatic staff. Since then he has been promoted to vice admiral. That was before Epstein shit became public. Since he isn't anymore doing public work for royal family and government, tax payers aren't covering his expenses and his official income is for retired commander, last substantive rank he held, that isn't fully served as he was in the navy for bit over 20 years so he gets pension of about £20k annually. Plus whatever handouts he gets from family members.

No. They actually get yelled at by their commanding officers and all that. This tradition even goes back to the Spanish colonial era. Spanish nobles that landed in Mexico or Peru would get bossed around by lower caste mestizos and the like. It's done on purpose to teach some sort of humility to them even if it is not permanent. The tradition died out for some time but it came back in the Franco era.

Not sure how Spain handles it but I can give some bong examples.
It's part of the covenant between the royal family and the military where all applicable members of the royal family are expected to serve in military roles, go through the proper training, and fight in wars when applicable like any other soldier.
Both the current princes William and the other one served in GWOT, with Harry being infantry and then a helicopter co-pilot/gunner and William being fully invested in helicopters to the point where he flew air ambulances after finishing his service. King Charles and his father Philip are Navy men though Charles has gone through Commando and Parachute training. The late Queen was famously an army mechanic and truck driver during WW2 and would occasionally terrify visiting dignitaries by putting those army driving skills to work off roading said dignitaries across her estates at high speed.

        >Not sure how Spain handles it
Our monarchy was abolished in 1931 and was only restored in 1975 per Francisco's Franco death wish, but before that Juan Carlos served as military officer and carried out official functions. When Franco died he was an absolute monarch before democracy was officially restored in 1981. King Felipe spent most of his young adult life doing military duties and its expected that his daughter will do the same.

I dont think anyone answered OP's question but I believe the Spanish Leopard 2Es have the improved frontal hull armor that some Leopard 2 users have. Naturally the Germans were too cheap to pay for this to be included on their A5 and A6 variants even though they are the ones who designed the improvement.
Maybe the Spanish Leopards also have the improved turret top armor the Swedish ones have? I'm not sure about that though.

Biggest difference aside from armor is command system, electronics, optronics, etc. Basically all the internal doodads. Which is to be expected given that is Spain's forte.
Notably, there's currently a program called Tortuga which will modernize them yet again with some new side armor and possibly active defense measures (read, either trophy or iron fist. Likely the 2nd since Spain's already tested it.) on top of yet another electronics/optronics package, so they can keep going till the eventual leopard successor program Spain's joined along with Italy, sweeden and obviously germany.

Leopards are your only choice for most countries since they let their defense industries rot in the 1990s due to "muh peace dividends." Hell even France and the UK are unable to make tanks anymore *(dumb fricks).

Your options nowadays are as follows:
      >if you have an industrial base and you are somewhat Western aligned you can produce Korean K2s (Turkey and Poland)
      >if you have no industrial base and you are somewhat Western aligned so you can buy Leopard 2s
      >if you bought Russian tanks before (good luck getting them now) and/or are not Western aligned then you buy Chinese tanks
      >upgrade the meme model of tank you have that you are no longer able to produce because you shutdown the factories (Italy and the UK)
      >you are a US vassal state and they essentially bribe you to buy their overpriced, under preforming hardware that no one wants (M1 Abrams) and because the wait for Leopard 2s is too long (Poland again and Taiwan)

The AMX30 unironically has "ww2-nazi-meme" tier transition, that tank is just shite to such an astonishing degree you'd think the frogs made it bad on purpose. Spain upgraded it to its literal theoretical limit with the AMX30E and even then its so utterly bad compared with the leopard than when asked to actually finally fix that shit they just went and changed the chassis for a leo 1's, picrel, just to make the point.

I believe Spain always wanted to adopt the Leopard 1 over the AMX, but they had no choice due to sanctions by the British

Yeah, bri'ish and 'mericans. Basically because of the recent transition to democracy NATO hadn't taken them off the shitlist so trying to buy Leo1s, which was their immediate want, was off the list.
The French straight up took advantage to scam the Spanish with the AMX hoping they'd become yet another indentured state that only buys frog shit. But what they didn't take into account is Spain knew damn well it was a scam, but bit anyway because it was buffing its MIC hardcore and from day 1 planned to mod the shit out of those so they could get leos in the future by basically using the simple argument of "if we already have advanced tanks and prove we can make and modify them sanctions are useless". USA and their bongland puppets didn't let go for way more than expected tho, mostly because USA was hoping the same thing as the French but with THEIR tanks instead, something Spain had discarded due to the sanctions during the war with morocco, disentangling from USA's MIC was a top priority there and is the reason why Spain still refuses to buy F35 much to america's rage. (As for the French, disentangling from them was also a priority but not for any hurt pride, just because their products were seen as hot garbage, and with good reason. Plus the AMX just confirmed Spain's belief in spades. Tank is trash.)
So then when the L2 popped around the spaniards tried again, the brits threw a fit so the germans tried to claim spain wasn't at leopard level and could only use older french tanks, so they cooked up that monstrosity out of a second hand L1 chassis just to shut their mouths, point at which they ran out of excuses and finally let Spain build the L2E, much to the screeching of both brits, french and burgers.
Just goes to show how much Spain cares about its MIC. And how highly it values german weaponry. As soon as Spain was a democracy it just knew sooner or later it'd be building its own leopard. And despite having everyone against them, god damnit, they did.

If they want to keep those baby flats usefully Spains is going to need F-35B at some point. Sell the Harriers to Vietnam or the Phillipines already.

There's a Spanish veteran who posts on PrepHole a lot. He had a cool story about the Ameli only sucking because they were just kept in storage for a decade and weren't lubed the few times they were used on excercizes. Mexico and Malaysia like their export versions.

Yeah, Ameli is unironically a great gun. But you know what they say about CETME. "Cada Esquina Tiene Mierda Escondida"

no, you build like 4 or 5 items and the rest is bought, as it should be for a medium-sized not-too-rich European country (no offence)

Smoke launchers! One of the many french upgrade packages they bought was for the god damned smoke launchers! Are you really telling me they couldn't figure that?! I'm not asking for new tanks here but god damn at least make your own cannisters. Spain's poorer than sweeden, it shouldn't be harder for them.

anon, there are lots and lots of small items, they all add up

Only Andrew and Harry saw combat, the rest are just royal LARP.

I'm sure the others wanted to serve a more serious capacity but since they're direct in line to the throne they can't do shit.

They're both members of the L2A6+ family, so fairly similar. Easiest to spot differences are the smoke launchers on the side of the turret (the spanish use spanish pattern, the swede uses french pattern). Aside from that most differences are internal.
On a different note, L2E started at 60% Spanish and has only gotten more nationalized with upgrade packages, the S122 started at 30% Swedish and has actually gotten even less nationalized through buying foreign upgrade packages. Which I don't say to praise the spaniards, but to b***h at the swedes. START CARING ABOUT YOUR MIC AND STOP FEEDING THE BAGUETTES AND KRAUTS DAMNIT!!!

We build our own IFVs, artillery, munitions, missiles, submarines and fighter jets and god knows what else. Granted we dont get many export orders, but what we build works for us up here and it still shits all over whatever Russia can field (thats a low bar to pass tho). I think we do just fine.

    >Also thread for Spanish stuff.
They literally invented one of the best LMGs in the early 1980s and fricked up it's production to everyone's dismay.

Ian's video on it sucks ass so watch an overview from a superior channel who does more than just read Wikipedia:

There was nothing in unreliable to flawed with the original AMELI design. The Spanish government simply thought they were too expensive and heavy so a second cheaper variant was produced for the Spanish army. The version of the AMELI that Mexico uses is basically a combination of parts kits from the original non cheap version and Mexican parts. IIRC the big difference is the version Mexico uses ahs less stamped parts. It's well liked by Mexican Marines. They did get a batch of Spanish produced AMELI at one point and found that they were not lubricated adequately but they worked fine after they were rebuilt.
