          GERMANY ZERO POINTS

off topic question to you out of the blue: does multiculturalism ever actually work?
i get the impression that nothing ever works but that impression may be misguided as could possibly be suspected with the sweeping, imprecise nature of it.
          what's your honest opinion?
are we actually condemned to civilizational regression and breakdown of cooperation?
i don't assume you think one way or the other - but lets assume that there aren't actual genes-based differences but "just" incredibly entrenched barriers of self-conception between nogs and krauts
          will things ever get better?
          are they even bad?
i mean, despair and anger sells well in the media space but I am not sure the mental model of the world many people - me arguably included - are getting is actually real

Whether or not it works isn't even the right question. It's an unavoidable, immutable fact of having a shitload of people. No matter what, unless you just start shooting anyone non-conforming, you will have different cultures and subcultures dependent on income, power, levels of education, sometimes ideological, sometimes just alt lifestyles. The notion that any group of people can be 100% in lockstep is fricking moronic and just isn't human reality. You might as well embrace and leverage it, because the only way to be rid of it is comic book tier villainy.
Even if you pulled it off, you've probably just fricked yourself because now you've created the same sort of culture of fear, corruption and lies out of life-preserving necessity that keeps the third world staying the third world.
The only breakdowns and non-cooperation come when one group decides they should be the only group allowed by law. Russia has absolutely weaponized the everliving frick out of this in the west.

Why don’t tanks move up to 155mm guns like artillery? The PZh2K carries 68 rounds in a Leopard 1 hull, has far higher range and 155mm HE rounds are more than enough to kill any existing tank + it’s future proof with huge room to grow.

      Anonymous

Probably has something to do with space constraints in the unmanned turret.
Smaller diameter munitions means you can carry more of them.
Improvements in propellants and/or the warhead itself.
      Meh. It's Germans being Germans.

      Anonymous

Perhaps because storage of 155mm ammo requires a lot of space. That's partially also why the Pzh2000 did not use a tank hull but had an own hull developed after a few prototypes with regular tank hulls failed at the beginning of the project. The layout with the rear door, feeding system and central ammo storage was revolutionary and every top rated western SPAG uses it nowadays to some degree

      Anonymous

The size of a tank with modern survivability with regards to armor would make that untenable. You would need to add another meter of width and another 15-25 tons of mass at minimum to get similar armor profile to modern MBTs. At that point you're getting into the 70-80 ton range with less mobility and that's not even including the additional sensors you'd need. If you went with an unmanned turret then you'd drop the weight but you'd also lose a lot of ammo capacity since a ton of it is in the back of the turret

        Anonymous

        >You would need to add another meter of width
And you can't do this without (possibly) making it no longer transportable.
SPG's like M109 get away with it by having thin armoring- after all, they're not intended to be taking direct fire.

          Anonymous

Yeah I didn't say it but that's the big issue, modern MBTs like the Leopard 2 and Abrams are already the same width as the Pzh 2000 is right now with minimal armor. Modern composite array would push that into ridiculous size category, almost 5 meters wide for a vehicle is going to be absurdly difficult to transport. In fact, the Pzh 2000 is literally shaped like that with the slanted roof because it literally wouldn't fit through most European railway tunnels with a more squared off turret. If you added 1m of width to that then you basically are stuck moving it on large trucks only.

      Anonymous

Rounds carried. During WWII, heavy tanks were at times rejected because they didn't carry the 80+ main gun rounds that were expected of them. Today, 30-40 is considered the minimum for western MBTs. SPGs have to sacrifice both rounds carried *and* armor (typically designed to stop small arms and shell fragments from enemy artillery) in order to fit a ~6" gun.

those look like the stuff germany wanted to build at the end of the cold war. Marder 2 were supposed to be second line vehicles for the reserves or something while 50-70 ton ifv/tank vehicles like this were the main systems of the professional part of the army

Gun is placed high up in order to depress it further, drone operators is a good idea for tank units, but there is no need for them to be in the tanks, that data can be transmitted to the tanks via datalink.

        >why didnt they replace the loader with a drone operator?
Because internal volume matters when you are trying to optimize a tank for doing tank things.
Put the drones operators in a Puma or Boxer, they come ready made for that shit already.

The single largest problem with the unmanned turret tank design is they all rely on cameras for the crew to maintain SA. Not only do they lose the depth of seeing things by eye, but cameras will be guaranteed damaged/non-serviceable for any number of reasons - now the tank is useless because the crew cannot see what is around them.
