It only works on a shooting range or otherwise against targets on a level plane with you and no ground obstructions in the way. It's completely useless in the woods, your visibility instantly drops to zero. I've tried to make this work for years and it's impossible. Maybe in some flat desert or something it might work but that's it.
Going prone helps when you're getting shot from nowhere and waiting for that surge of adrenaline
>hurrrrr hurrrrr hurrrrrreeee
SEEEEEEEEEX
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Have you ever been shot at before?
You'll find a way to make being prone work.
Have you ever been outside before? You're more likely to find Bigfoot then a place where laying prone will offer any advantage at all. Maybe Afghanistan is different.
You are a fricking moron, to be entirely honest with you, family.
Your argument is that most places are not flat enough or have too much ground cover that laying down is useless because you can't see the threat and shoot at them. This works both ways. If you can't see the threat any longer, they probably can't see you. Not only does this offer concealment it may also provide cover. Even if an area is very flat, laying down also substantially minimizes the amount of exposure to fire. It's much easier to hit someone standing than the lower profile of someone prone.
Different poster but maybe prone is good if you are watching a certain spot (like watching your previous track before you turned 360 degrees and went into the hiding spot). For defending against an unknown number of attackers, it sounds like a bad idea, any thoughts, genuinely curious
For when someone is going to shoot back at you. Also long range plains shooting.
This thread is fricking moronic.
You go prone when you're being shot when there is no cover nearby, typically when you first make contact. You should get down low or prone if you only have concealment. It reduces your surface area to the person who is shooting at you. Of course, every situation is different.
From there, you can start to figure out where that person is. No one will lie prone in a forest trying to shoot a target unless the situation dictates it for some reason. It's a false equivalency, where OP is trying to make it seem like going prone in a forest is moronic because there are trees, which reduces the conditions one would find at a range. I wasn't aware OP gets shot at when he's at a range... unless, of course, he's moronic and the RSO wants to remove him from the gene pool.
Shit like "lying prone will give me hypothermia" makes me misunderstand what situations he's calling prone useless in.
>No one will lie prone in a forest trying to shoot a target
Except soldiers. They'll go prone 99% of the time because it's time-tested doctrine.
>In the mountains
>Get shot at
>Lay down
>Get shot because they're at a higher elevation than you and laying down didn't matter
I don't see how that's not reasonable, but I am interested to glean some wisdom here
>take fire
>make your silhouette smaller and possibly use any amount of knee-level foliage as concealment
>figure out what the frick is going on
vs
>take fire
>stand there like a goon in Call of Duty
>eat shit on the follow-up shot cuz you're 4 times as tall
Mind you this is situational. If ducking behind cover is an option, good. Do that. If it's a close-in ambush and you have to break contact by dumping your load on their face, okay do that.
Also keep in mind that a lot of prone is just laying there waiting for an open shot, or covering your sector for the maneuver elements. I really don't get what type of narrow-form autism you're afflicted with here.
>stand there like a goon in Call of Duty
>not kneejerk dropshotting every tactical engagement you get into
I prefer to spray from the hip while strafing.
>he doesn’t practice slide canceling and tap strafing every time he hits the range
>he probably can’t even jitter aim
ngmi
I'm just fricken thick apparently. I'm not talking about just standing there, out in the mountain someone can easily be 20 to 30 feet higher than you and if they're shooting at you in a forest they're probably close right? Like <100yds? That might be where I'm all fricked up. I'm thinking the viginia mountains near the border of west virginia, just very dense woods with constant changes in elevation. It seems better to stay on your feet and crouch, or run 10yds away and they probably wouldn't be able to see you anymore.
>just very dense woods with constant changes in elevation. It seems better to stay on your feet and crouch
So you're saying that it might not be useful in close contact with thick and abundant cover available? That falls under the realm of common sense, I'm mostly confused as to what argument you're even trying to make.
I'm really making an argument and I admit to having no experience here, I felt no one in the thread really addressed OP's point and just kept talking about how laying prone is the end all be all of shooting tactics, so I gave my perspective.
No one in this thread said standing up is a good idea when you're getting shot at. His point is that if you lay prone in the woods your visibility goes to shit.
If they’re above you the only thing that’ll help is a massive bolder. Again in this scenario your in a position now body position by itself is gonna save you.
Patrol better. Also the IA isnt to just lie down, it's to shoot, run, go prone, crawl to a fire position, observe, shoot, repeat.
>I am interested to glean some wisdom here
My brother in christ if you're getting shot at from a 90 degree angle above you, you have problems that cannot be solved by general infantry practices. I can't tell if you're genuinely thick or just baiting but either way, good job.
>lying prone will give me hypothermia
i remember lying down in an ambush position and I got hypothermia because the fricking rain, and then everyone started shooting and my fingers were too numb, and I didn't even realize I was pulling the trigger. If I could have moved I would have, but muh ambush discipline.
hypothermia sucks bro, cold ground is cold and you don't want to hug it for hours in the middle of the night
But I want to hug you for hours in the middle of the night :3
thank you, destiny.
They might be able to see your lower body very easily.
For cover I prefer squatting behind large trees, I can easily engage targets that way and can instantly get up and move.
Laying prone will also give you hypothermia almost instantly for much of the year where I live.
Trees aren't cover. They're concealment. Enjoy getting shot through a tree because you decided that 100 years worth of learned experience about infantry drills was wrong because you don't have perfect observation and fields of fire while prone. The gene pool will be better without you. Goes for
etc as well.
>become a strictly stationary target
vs
>Become a moving target and finding cover/concealment
In the mountains at least there hills and ditches everywhere. Last time I went camping it looked like some cars were driving up in the trees because the treeline obscured a hill with a whole ass road there that none of us were aware of.
I have never been shot at, but I have to agree with OP's sentiment. It seems like there are a lot of environments where laying prone is the dumbest thing you can do, and I can't help but notice the only times I've seen cops do it while getting shot at is if they're trying to shoot under a car.
Are you actually being serious right now? I can't tell if you're pissing down my back or seriously lack the mental acuity for reasonable thought.
DDCOSF
I fricking hate civilians
Fed fricks get fricked in hell. Frick you
Why are you thinking about another man being fricked? Are you gay?
it works but no one flops on their stomachs anymore. it should take ¼second to get into prone firing position.
In the Eastern woods you would have to hike all day to find a spot where you could lay prone and see anything beyond 10 feet.
The eastern woods don't have a single topological ridgeline? What a shithole, I'm glad I've never been.
Generally not.
I took a course from the based Russian contractors at center T when they were doing US stuff, and they mentioned going prone is less useful for a civilian protecting themselves, more useful if your squad is backing you up
>I've tried to make this work for years and it's impossible
lol no you haven't, noguns teenager
you need to be 18 years or older to post here, you know
I don't usually have regular access to shooting ranges because I move and travel allot. I do all of my shooting out in public woods. I have tried to employ the prone technique to sight in rifles more times than I can remember. It NEVER works. I can NEVER find a single spot where I can achieve adequate visibility from a prone position.
My favorite technique for maximum accuracy, without carrying a tripod into the field, is to drive a fixed blade knife into a tree and use that as a rest while sitting down. It's not perfect but I've yet to find a better field technique.
holy shit I was thinking you were 16-17 but now I'm pretty confident you're 15 years old or less by how hard you're trying
I sit down while shooting, the Steadicam arm mount makes it effortless
The real strat is squat shooting. It's extremely comfy and practical, better than getting down on one knee in every way. Most people in the west are too fat and immobile to properly squat at all.
as a fat and immobile westerner, how to git gud at squatting like that?
Daily practice my friend. Just throughout the day try to stretch and get as low as possible. It'll eventually begin to feel good, since it is a natural movement everyone can do as a child. Don't let any moron screech about femur to torso ratios or whatever cope bullshit.
Left has a neutral spine that is needed for squatting heavy weight in the gym, while butt wink on the right is comfier and good for most other situations.
Also lose weight homosexual.
>Don't let any moron screech about femur to torso ratios or whatever cope bullshit.
these are absolutely real, but it's correctable through widening or narrowing your stance. source: 365 pound back squat, 245 pound front squat.
How do you squat flat footed comfortably? I can squat comfortably for long periods of time (thanks wrestling) but only on the balls of my feet. Doing it flat footed fricks with my knees.
I shoot kinda like this if it's annoying to lay down and I'm trying to hit something I don't want to shoot at unsupported.
>Making yourself a smaller target, getting cover and concealment, and a more stable shooting position is dumb.
This is you, look at yourself.
Prone is legit the most stable shooting position.
Just go on the top of a hill and do it??? Or in a building?
>be shot at
>make yourself a fraction of a target and return fire to suppress
or
>stay the same size give them no reason to stop shooting and hop away
you're moronic, even more moronic than someone who goes prone in every situation instead of applying a technique when it's appropriate and not when it's not
>literally the most common advice combat vets give is “hit the dirt when shit goes down
>THIS IS moronic I KNOW BETTER THAN PRETTY MUCH EVERY COMBAT VETERAN OF A MODERN WAR
i can't see shit when i look up through glasses lenses at a weird angle. for me it is standing up shooting
Going prone is for street defence because there is less cover and concealment there and the terrain is level
>your visibility drops to zero
Yeah, if you lay down in a moronic spot you fricking autist.
This is one of the stupidest threads I've seen all week. You are a very stupid person, OP. Please go back to wherever you came from or do the world a favor and go drown yourself.
Is coffee good for you?
It’s less about shooting others and more about not getting shot, unless you have a vantage point.
if you go prone and you are covered by obstructions, then going prone worked.
