Laying prone is useless

It only works on a shooting range or otherwise against targets on a level plane with you and no ground obstructions in the way. It's completely useless in the woods, your visibility instantly drops to zero. I've tried to make this work for years and it's impossible. Maybe in some flat desert or something it might work but that's it.

Your argument is that most places are not flat enough or have too much ground cover that laying down is useless because you can't see the threat and shoot at them. This works both ways. If you can't see the threat any longer, they probably can't see you. Not only does this offer concealment it may also provide cover. Even if an area is very flat, laying down also substantially minimizes the amount of exposure to fire. It's much easier to hit someone standing than the lower profile of someone prone.

Different poster but maybe prone is good if you are watching a certain spot (like watching your previous track before you turned 360 degrees and went into the hiding spot). For defending against an unknown number of attackers, it sounds like a bad idea, any thoughts, genuinely curious

            This thread is fucking retarded.

You go prone when you're being shot when there is no cover nearby, typically when you first make contact. You should get down low or prone if you only have concealment. It reduces your surface area to the person who is shooting at you. Of course, every situation is different.

From there, you can start to figure out where that person is. No one will lie prone in a forest trying to shoot a target unless the situation dictates it for some reason. It's a false equivalency, where OP is trying to make it seem like going prone in a forest is retarded because there are trees, which reduces the conditions one would find at a range. I wasn't aware OP gets shot at when he's at a range... unless, of course, he's retarded and the RSO wants to remove him from the gene pool.

Shit like "lying prone will give me hypothermia" makes me misunderstand what situations he's calling prone useless in.

Mind you this is situational. If ducking behind cover is an option, good. Do that. If it's a close-in ambush and you have to break contact by dumping your load on their face, okay do that.
Also keep in mind that a lot of prone is just laying there waiting for an open shot, or covering your sector for the maneuver elements. I really don't get what type of narrow-form autism you're afflicted with here.

I'm just fucken thick apparently. I'm not talking about just standing there, out in the mountain someone can easily be 20 to 30 feet higher than you and if they're shooting at you in a forest they're probably close right? Like <100yds? That might be where I'm all fucked up. I'm thinking the viginia mountains near the border of west virginia, just very dense woods with constant changes in elevation. It seems better to stay on your feet and crouch, or run 10yds away and they probably wouldn't be able to see you anymore.

So you're saying that it might not be useful in close contact with thick and abundant cover available? That falls under the realm of common sense, I'm mostly confused as to what argument you're even trying to make.

I'm really making an argument and I admit to having no experience here, I felt no one in the thread really addressed OP's point and just kept talking about how laying prone is the end all be all of shooting tactics, so I gave my perspective.

                >be shot at
                >make yourself a fraction of a target and return fire to suppress
                or
                >stay the same size give them no reason to stop shooting and hop away
you're retarded, even more retarded than someone who goes prone in every situation instead of applying a technique when it's appropriate and not when it's not

No one in this thread said standing up is a good idea when you're getting shot at. His point is that if you lay prone in the woods your visibility goes to shit.

For cover I prefer squatting behind large trees, I can easily engage targets that way and can instantly get up and move.

Laying prone will also give you hypothermia almost instantly for much of the year where I live.

Trees aren't cover. They're concealment. Enjoy getting shot through a tree because you decided that 100 years worth of learned experience about infantry drills was wrong because you don't have perfect observation and fields of fire while prone. The gene pool will be better without you. Goes for

In the mountains at least there hills and ditches everywhere. Last time I went camping it looked like some cars were driving up in the trees because the treeline obscured a hill with a whole ass road there that none of us were aware of.

I have never been shot at, but I have to agree with OP's sentiment. It seems like there are a lot of environments where laying prone is the dumbest thing you can do, and I can't help but notice the only times I've seen cops do it while getting shot at is if they're trying to shoot under a car.

I don't usually have regular access to shooting ranges because I move and travel allot. I do all of my shooting out in public woods. I have tried to employ the prone technique to sight in rifles more times than I can remember. It NEVER works. I can NEVER find a single spot where I can achieve adequate visibility from a prone position.

My favorite technique for maximum accuracy, without carrying a tripod into the field, is to drive a fixed blade knife into a tree and use that as a rest while sitting down. It's not perfect but I've yet to find a better field technique.
