Lathe

Can someone link to a lathe under 600 pounds, either benchtop or standalone, that would be capable of making a gear and half pully combo (like from a cvt) a bit wider than the diameter of a palm, as well as other components? I can spend up to two grand, I also want to know what to look for in the used market
I'm new to machining so I'm looking for other resources (books with projects and classes) too

Lathes don't make gears. You're moronic and I hate you.

    >the diameter of a palm

You again. Not that I give a damn, make all the threads you want, but why not try to be coherent in a single thread? The machine shop world did not change in the last week.

And making actual decent gears is not done on a mill or a lathe, unless you are talking about junk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7vQ9oVkX-k

why didnt you post in the machinist general?
    Why didnt you google it?

I will give you a hint, its going to cost $2k to retrofit the parts you need on a lathe to cut a gear

I cut a 26 tooth mod 1 pitch gear from delrin on a barely modified harbor freight lathe. It took fricking forever and I'll never do it again but it can be done. Indexing the head is really the only big must have if time isn't of the essence of the project. I used a custom ground tool in the compound and stroke cut it in 5 passes per tooth. I think I gave myself carpal tunnel syndrome by the time it was finished.

Time isn't of the essence at all, I just need the parts to good tolerances out of aluminum and some smaller ones of steel, I have 2 months left to work on it and 3 months off a year

Just pay a chink ebay seller. They do one offs if you email them.

He will 100% need a toolpost spindle with involute gear cutting wheels.
Any benchtop machine will not have the stiffness in the saddle to stroke cut aluminum and steel with a tool.
