Land mines

How do you advance through mined fields and terrain? I read that Russia has laid lots of land mines to slow the impending Ukrainian counter offensive. How will they get around this? How has the scenario been dealt with in the past?
Also bonus: my grandpa lost both his legs and a finger in Vietnam to a landmine

Mine-protected clearance vehicle (MPCV). You can improv them out of an APC and some dozer parts if uncle sugar won't send any over

honestly given how shitty russians have been conducting warfare, i wouldn't be surprised if this is all Ukraine needs to clear their minefield.
you just know a moron buried a dozen of those face down.
minefields may will slow them down a bit but Ukrainian will be out for blood and that's all they will see that day.

As others point out, mine clearing isn't that bad if you have access to industrial machinery including farm machinery. its really only a pain in the ass when the area is still barely above bronze age, like afghanistan or morrocco, or in a jungle

Same way mines have always been marked and cleared. A boy, a stick, a pocketful of little flags. You just probe along and mark the ones you find

    Explosive demining.
    Ur-77, artillery
Mine protected vehicles, for example tanks with mine rollers attached
    Sappers
It's difficult, but it's pretty much a standard procedure which has been developed over decades

      >Mine protected vehicles, for example tanks with mine rollers attached
I remember notes from the war that at leas the vatnik union version was really dogshit as the driver tended to have a concussion after two AT explosions in front of the machine

Same with Abrams mounted rollers really. They are rated to 2 AT mines detonations. They are not for clearing minefields. They to probe paths and find minefields. Path breach is done by ploughs

Most Russians dont know the difference. Also their ploughs are shit. Weak and they dont have guiding skis, they tend to constantly break out form teh soil and need to repeat setup.

Honestly with current technology it would be rather easy to install remote control. Take an obsolete machine, give it a roller or a plough and send it ahead. If you take out all the ammo, it'll be difficult to didable too

That's what ukrainian farmers are doing to clear out their fields after the Puccian occupiers fled. Ask a few of them how they did it, increase capacity for that, profit.

US future program for mine fields breaching is drones, drones everywhere.

This. Biggest hurdle is doing it while being shot at. Needs a lot of coordination and multiple breach points.

    You ride around them.
In combat to check where are there them mines your ride roller mine clear as lead vehicles (they blow up some mines you get thee mines try anther route).
In the worst case when you cant move around clear teh pass with explosive charges and mined clearing ploughs.
Dismounted engineers with mine searching equipment mark minefields in the quiet areas and remove mines after if needed.

    Materially overmatch the explosive.
A 300ton quarry trucks tyres will absorb atmine hits like road noise, whilst going 40mph cross country and wading through any river in Ukraine.

Or you can use a load of little 10ton tracked jury rig jobs with a dozer blade hanging out a few meters ahead

Or a western "engineering" tank but these cost so many millions and they are slow and too few

Ideally i.e. how the west does it during high speed ops is with MICLICs, rocket propelled line charges that detonate and fricking destroy the things over an 8 meter wide by 100 meter long rectangle. We sent those to Ukraine apparently, so have fun

Have lots of engineers who can act on short notice. If you are not an engineer don't trail blaze. Use tracked instead of wheeled vehicles. It is harder to repair, but harder to break in the first place because of a mine. Some armored vehicles have been known to drive over exploding mines, but no one is there to ay attention and document good data, those one off stories could have easily been because of expired explosives and so on.

Seriously, the used those very effectively in Kosovo to clear minefields. There is even a remote controlled one now and afaik Ukraine will receive 5 Keilers.

Conscript locals to move through them before your troops do, since it’s blindingly obvious the locals in the areas where the minefield is are obviously partisans

Just pass over them too quickly to detonate them. All the more reason for the Ukrainians to give us some good tempo
