This is just the municipal japanese weapons permit, is not valid outside of japan, I guess they only showed a picture of it because vendors nowadays refuse to send it with the swords, back in the day they sent it as with the sword outside japan was of no use.

It only says is a sword and is real, I guess that with a two times broken katana with two holes in the nakago and no signature they did not even bother to appraise it by the NBTHK.

A little bit pricy, but looks OK, the bad things and ridiculous prices will start to happen when you'll want to put this in a proper kosihrae, and for the love of god treat the metal properly, rust can grow in HOURS if some idiot handled it wrong.

But yes, still can be a shit, brittle blade that breaks easily and the owner could not afford any better, or change it.

      >$980
WTF where did you get an origami sword for that cheap, did Filipino chimps living illegally in Japan make it?

Aren't those small ones only used to commit suicide?

Daisho swords (large and small together) became popular in the middle ages of Japan and were iconic until sword wearing was banned during Meiji. Essentially it was an "indoors sword" bc you didn't wear the dai katana in polite company. Musashi famously taught the use of both at the same time, but most did not, it was basically sharp garden gnomeelry and/or side piece for fighting in cramped quarters.
Seppuku was usually performed with the main blade, the dead man wrapping the blade in paper except for the last 6" or so. Wakisashi could be used for it but it wasn't normal.

what the fuck is wrong with pricing in your hobby
why do you willingly keep spending so much

Japanese antiques are expensive, entry level papered blades start at 1k. There are a lot of them, but polishing and exporting them is expensive. Making new, well polished, well forged and shaped swords is also very time and labor intensive. Even higher tier chinese forges like zsey have 2k+ swords.

Making good swords isn't easy and the price reflects that.

how is it expensive to polish a sword
just buy a newly forged one. who cares if it is folded 1000 times glorious nippon steel, as long as it holds an edge and maintains the same handling characteristics as an original piece it's good enough

              >expensive to polish a sword
budget a couple thou and you may well need to send it to japan, there are very few competent polishers outside grorious nippon and they're all busy- and either a bad polish or lack of polish will put a serious dent in value. the maintenance routines are more than a polite suggestion

you can buy a sword for way cheaper if the polish is off, it just won't be as shiny

the japs prize the aesthetic of cleaniless above all else. its like the opposite of western antiques, where disturbing the patina of a weapon is tantamount to ruining it because it removes signs of history.
japs want the blade in and of itself to be as pristine and flawless as possible, that's why all the nihonto sites have assloads of hi res photos of the blades. there's a specific set of metrics associated with a good polish and if its off its like trying to sell an unwaxed used car. with donut crumbs in the front seat

                Anonymous

I buy the unwaxed used cars off craigslist because they still work and are way cheaper
it's just interesting to me that weebsword collectors spend so much money on genuine swords they never use
it's like people who spend tens of thousands on a transferrable machine gun as an 'investment' and keep it locked in their safe 24/7
you don't really see HEMAfags going out of their way to spend thousands on genuine medieval swords

                Anonymous

You can't spend thousands of dollars on 600 year old European swords because they're purely museum pieces. Removing rust and restoring European antiques to use them is verboten. If it wasn't, you bet your fucking ass people would.

Repolishing and actively using antique swords is a uniquely Japanese thing, and those antiques are actually used for Iaido and tamashegiri if they aren't irreplaceable.

                Anonymous

                >you don't really see HEMAfags going out of their way to spend thousands on genuine medieval swords
They exist, that's pretty much Albion's market. Those swords are too expensive to do much beyond being collector's pieces. That being said, most HEMAfags I know(all three of them) don't own expensive swords like that and instead use much cheaper ones because they expect they'll be scratched and damaged.
At the end of the day, a sword is a sword, and if it's up to a certain standard, they will all cut a tatami mat the same way. A piece of paper doesn't change that.

I really enjoy that the longquan forges have blown the katana market to smithereens. outside of the expected scams and shady resellers, you get just as much sword as you pay for, no more, no less. they cover every notch and you see the price go up as you pick brass over zamak, silk over nylon, rayskin instead of synthetic, hamon, diff temp, sanmai, etc. and it draws a clear clear line in the sand: made in Japan=real deal
makes it harder for Hanwei/CAS to get away with their price gouging and makes Cold Steel look like a sick man in bed when it comes to swords

My wife got me a set of three T10 swords for cheaper than your wakizashi cost. Don't buy into the "certified smith" meme, it's not worth it for a sword that you will never use and will sit on your wall or in a stand for 99.99% of its lifetime. Only autists who spent too much money online will ever shit on you for having a no-name mass production sword. Modern smithing techniques produce an infinitely higher quality blade than traditional smithing techniques which are made to remove impurities from shit steel where the percentages of carbon and other contaminants can't be guaranteed.

Are you saying you know more about Japanese Swords than a 19th century Japanese Imperial General?

Nice dubs, but they reverted back to japanese swords like a generation later. Even the Tokyo Metropolitan Police started out with japanese swords and didn't get into kyu gunto. They didn't change because these swords were better, but it it was just a cheap nod into westernization. Later on they realized that the french and german techniques weren't that much better (especially for bayonet fencing) and they had tons of good instructors with now actual close combat knowledge thanks to the violent end of the edo-era ready to teach. Plea to get kenjutsu back was made by generals in the 1870s. By the Taisho era, there was no western sword out there and they went back into the traditional style of swords. Also because swords were useless in practical terms, so might as well tap into the traditional stuff.
See Maxime Chouinard's research about that.

          Nice dubs though.

that's around when HEMA started getting on its feet among people who are already into archery and [tw] olympic fencing.

eastern ancient & medieval weapon hobbies have been more weeb-friendly because there's much less expectation of historicity in terms of being a 'practitioner' of the thing. ain't no samurai around no more and there's a lot of gaps in records regarding japanese swordfighting. half of the culture is from old-timey imperial japanese larpers, who were cosplaying even at the time.

Did a Google translate, 書き順 apparently means stroke order, and maybe you fucks shouldn’t explain it if it has “stroke” in the translation

it's probably just the guy who posted his sword saying it was cheap. some nafri or Hispanic who was acting like a facebook retard in a thread about the sword the other day, while also expecting people to help him ID it.

Get a caliper and post dimensions. They say katana blades are thicker than western swords, can the same be said of a wakishashi?

Sorry I do not see the point in a useless knife for that price, its worse than most wall hangers both in terms of utility and aesthetic, unless you plan to ritualisticly have a nice day with it, you blew your money for less than nothing.

if you're going to get a knife (keep in mind you did post this in the weapons board) you could've got a tanto tbat atleast would have a similar aesthetic with a better handle and a tsuba. if not then atleast get a kitchen knife that will be something you can use daily and appreciate and care for the same way

OP here, I’ll send another pic to prove it, the sword is a beauty and no I don’t intend to use it, I have a love for the tradition and craftsmanship that goes into these blades, I don’t intend to use it for cutting of any sort, and I do intend to take it out every day and appreciate it, the edge is a little dull sadly, and a proper repolish would be more pricy than the original blade, it doesn’t bother me too much as I don’t intend to cut, and the tip is still very sharp, kind of surprised this thread isn’t dead yet

It's not supposed to be shaving sharp you know. Swords that sharp chip and roll if you look at them funny. Unless you can see flat spots on the edge it's likely just as the maker intended with a robust convex edge.

Also to answer question about why I was shirtless, no, I didn’t slice open my guts, it was because the package arrived early and I was exited to open it, even in my half dressed state
