Kino of a squad assaulting a russian BMP-2.

They hit it with an NLAW, which immobilises it. Then they finish it off with 5 or so RPG shots.
Pretty cool to see what it looks like on the shooters' side, not just from a drone.

It's interesting to look at the details on the M4s in this video. The gopro guy's lower was updated to M4A1 spec from something else, probably an M16A2 or early M4, since you can see where they blanked out the "BURST" text and replaced it with "AUTO." The bearded guy at the beginning still has remnants of tan camo on his gun too, which probably means it saw service in GWOT. Kinda crazy to think about how much shit these guns have seen in their lives.

Also, it's kinda nuts to imagine this from the Spetz's perspective. We know that these guys are a haphazardly thrown together volunteer unit, but the Russians don't, and I have to imagine that they'd be shitting themselves hearing voices yelling in English outside, they probably think it's some kind of CIA death squad or something.

Nah I think they'd know roughly which units are in the area, and which parts of those units are likely to have foreign volunteers. The sketchy part though would be figuring out the training level of the foreign unit relative to the ordinary Ukrainian Army/TDF, and what support it has available. If I was a Spetznas soldier sent out to do recon and heard American voices outside, and I'd been briefed that they have direct links to artillery and are composed of ex-USMC troops who know how to call that in, and they're operating in roughly the same form as a USMC squad, I'd be fricking shitting myself.

If I knew they were just bands of English speaking volunteers attached to a Ukrainian unit though I'd be seriously considering my options in engaging and destroying them. Presumably if I'm a semi-competent SOF operator and I'm up against some, I dunno, ex-USAF mechanics and shit, I'm going to win 9/10.

If you are bunched up in a house and there is a squad scattered around you, you are going to die if you engage them 100 %, it doesn't matter what training they have.
One grenade or rocket into the window, death. One guy randomly looking at the door while you storm out, death. One guy that is behind you that you didn't see from your window, death.

They did well not engaging them.

I'm not so sure. From what's publicly available, at least, Russians tend to give very little intel to their frontline units and just tell them to capture a certain objective by a certain time with basically no elaboration on top of that. That's not unique to the Russians, any GWOT vet can tell you that intel is never good enough, but they're particularly bad about it. This is early in the way when Russian propaganda was still claiming that NATO SOF were boots on the ground doing all the real work, too. Wouldn't surprise me at all if the Spetz thought they'd run into Delta or CIA SAD or something when they heard American voices yelling outside, especially because they're likely to know what English sounds like but not understand it enough to recognize the different accents and realize that the group they're fighting is multinational.

This is one of the better videos that capture the moment to moment tension.

Yeah, and it also captures the porosity and blurriness of the front line better than anything I've ever seen. It's really interesting to me to see these guys roaming around in a small group and barely seeing anybody else in a relatively large area when so many other reports have portrayed a much more solid line with trench warfare or large armored operations and so on.

It's personally particularly weird for me because I used to be into milsim airsoft back in the day, before I got into real /k/ shit, and it's bizarre how much these videos resemble my experiences at those big airshit ops.

Actually, here's what seemed to have happened. CivDiv said that the cameraman got injured from arty in the neck 10 minutes after the assault. What I imagined happened, is that when the 1rst BMP got done, the spetznas called in a fire mission and were hunkering down before the arty hit. That's also why the BMP probably left the area. The likely didn't expect to get advanced on.

Also, if you hear other interviews with veterans like the one with Dakota at speak the truth, he often says that whenever Russians lose a vehicle they get pissed and start pissing arty everywhere.

The captions say the assault on the Russians will be in the next video, so I guess we'll find out in a few days. It also mentions that the guy with the gopro is still recovering from injuries sustained in that battle so it must've gotten pretty serious considering that was 6 months ago.

Apparently it's custom for Ukrainian soldiers that trained with US troops to wear those. The guys in OP's video are clearly American, but that's why you see lots of Ukrainians wearing them too.

a lot of these guys are a part of a specific "spetsnaz" group that was assembled after they got kicked out of the foreign legion (civdiv talks about it in his q&a, lol). they fought in Iraq and Syria and they all assembled in Ukraine when war broke out.

What did they get kicked out for?
And why did they then get to form a new group?

            Anonymous

They were "kicked out" very early in the war for going on a firemission behind Russian lines without orders but were recommended to another unit that took them in. Basically they were just transferred to another unit.

you have that mostly right, but its not a group of people that this happened to, its just the one individual who uploads the youtube videos. he volunteered for the kurds in iraq, then went to ukraine. he isn't permanently part of some group of people, he jumped around between various different groups for a variety of reasons while in ukraine.

From what Civ Div has said, I think it's safe to assume the guys in the videos were part of the Spetsnaz group that joined the legion after he got sick. He talks about how the Spetsnaz group disbanded and many joined the legion and now he's getting videos from them.

It's the International Legion. They have the IL patches on and can be seen frequently. The channel it's uploaded to has two other videos from that day, one appears to be shortly after the fight with the BMP and the other is a few hours later where they kill a squad of Russians in cqc without realising. Apparently there's more footage from that day yet to be released but it should be coming soon.

They didn't bring their own guns, the US and other NATO countries donated a bunch and it makes sense for the Ukrainian authorities to give them to foreign fighters and save their AKs and derivatives for Ukrainian fighters so everybody gets something closer to what they're trained with.

Not even an MBT, just a IFV.

We also don't know how many of the follow up rounds actually hit. The NLAW struck it at an angle that killed the drivetrain but left the turret working, everything after that was unguided and even the guys in the video didn't seem that clear on whether the shots were landing or not.

I still don't know if the NLAW HEAT cone is fixed or has a motor that flips it 90 degrees based on attack mode.
If it's fixed, which is most likely, it wouldn't have done a whole lot more other than damage the engine or tracks from the front.
Direct is probably just detonate whatever is in there to take out light vehicles like TIGR.

        Anonymous

It seems to be fixed downwards, the better question is how does it attack in direct attack?
I wonder if it tries to pitch the missile upwards at the last instant to aim the warhead down?

          Anonymous

Doesn't it use a contact fuse for that? The HEAT charge will probably just shoot its load into the ground.
I'd imagine this still does things to a barely armored truck if it goes off while smashing into its side.
