Kherson front updates.

Ukraine has now struck the Inghulets bridge as well, both bridges out of Kherson are damaged, and perhaps unusable for heavy traffic. Russia claims that the bridge and dam near Nova Khokova was also hit overnight by missiles.

Do Russian soldiers stationed there even know that? Do they realize what will happen next?

The cables in and under the concrete are fraying and becoming undone. Russians stated that they have been trying to find engineers specializing in this type of construction but can’t find any to repair the Antonivka bridge.

You can also see it in PrepHole post - the vatniks always out themselves as completely ignorant on any practical topic - from welding, to civil engineering, to engine transmissions, to agriculture, satellite navigation and even the weather and climate of Europe and European Russia.

The cables and what this style of construction looks like.

Specifically these cables are used for prestressing the concrete to make it suitable to drive on. Destroying those tendons significantly weakens the tensile strength of a large section of the bridge not just the areas with holes blown through them. Fixing the issue would first require a shit ton of investigation by engineers and then require very complicated and specialized formwork and bolstering sections of the bridge with adhoc post-tensioning support beams.

This damage is something that would need to be carried out by a very advanced construction firm and would take a year at a minimum as I doubt their are many firms specializing in fixing bridges damaged by theatre ballistic missiles. Then again that is to raise the structural soundness of the bridge to that of western civilian standards which I doubt is necessary for Russian purposes.

              Anonymous

Oh I get it. So with some of the cables destroyed, there’s no more stress pushing the weight of the slabs up, making it weigh down on itself, and driving anything heavy over it could be disastrous.

                Anonymous

yes for a recent example look at the genoa viaduct collapse which was caused by undertensioning the cables aswell as corrosion of the cables. Concrete has poor tensile strength and that is extremely important when building bridges, when something heavy is on the bridge in the middle of two anchorages then concrete has the tendency to pull apart hence the need to reinforce it with high tensioned tendons.

                Anonymous

So I want to guess that the cables run all across the slab? From one edge to another? If it snaps anywhere along the length of the cable, does that mean that all tension is lost from that cable? If so then if you were to lay out a grid of lines on this slab that was hit, it looks like the majority of the lines are destroyed or damaged. With some of the holes destroying the cables on the far side, while some have destroyed them on the near side, some on the left, some on the right. Maybe less than 20% of them remain intact. If what I’m assuming is true.

Bridges are designed with massive margins of safety. Hence why they last so long.

they dont tend to be designed to withstand missile attacks tho and its not like we are talking about safety for cars. you can drive as many of those over the bridges as you want but a column of tanks?...

                Anonymous

They run all along the slab but are typically compartmentalized, they are usually run from a section of stiffening girder, bolstering or anchorage to another. But yes cutting a tendon effectively causes it to lose all tensile benefits so whatever the length of tendon cut its now the length of bridge that is unsafe.

well the main thing is that concrete is good in compression not in tension. I don't specialize in bridges, but steel reinforcements are needed on the tension side of a bending concrete section. not having it makes failure far more likely. Prestressing helps reduce deflection of a member, but the primary thing to remember is that steel, prestressed or not, resists tension in concrete. not having steel will lead to a sudden and catastrophic failure. Think of it this way, when you bend a paperclip it will bend very far then break eventually. It bent far so you can tell it will snap soon. on the other hand, glass fails suddenly. A glass stirring rod when bent will just shatter all of a sudden. Concrete by itself break suddenly. steel deflects then breaks more than concrete.

Yes and no. You could always just throw another span of stiff metal decking across that section because the pillars are still standing. It obviously would not be on par with what used to be there and the Ukies will just bomb it again but when they bomb it again you just repair it again. You only have to be able to get one truck at a time over it in one direction, really.

              >"span is too long"
Unlikely, but even if it is just tether a barge there with a "pillar" on it to support the span midway.

I'm amazed that Russia hasn't planned for this eventuality.

Bruh, that's not how it works at all. The steel weighs a frickton. It would just make the bridge more likely to collapse.

The tanks are too fricking heavy. Far as Ukraine is concerned, 3 BTGS' worth of equipment is now theirs. The Russian occupiers will fricking leverage it as a way to survive now. Opportunists will cut deals with the Ukrainians to ensure the equipment isn't destroyed, making certain Ukraine takes the war gear intact.

                In Russia? Lots.
The lands west of the Urals are so flat that they make Iowa look hilly, and since only a couple rivers formed in them drainage doesn't occur, either. That means that whenever it rains the area turns into a fricking swamp, since the only way the water has to is downwards.

This little quirk is what stalled the German advance towards Moscow in 1941, because the Soviets had fricked their own railroads and the normal ones became unusable.

This. And there are also verying levels of decay. Tatarstan for example might be a shithole by Western standards, but it's an OKayish place in Russia relatively, because SOME infrastructure holds up and SOME public services are sometimes working.

Lower Volga region and especially rural Siberia are on the other hand are places where introducing Mad Max living standards would be an improvement.

The really have a Borg or a virus mindset. They feel the need to be powerful and to spread their influence. Everything else is secondary.

They will happily wallow in literal shit and starve if only their Motherland is powerful and beats some foreign people to pulp. It's worth noting that the only way for a Russian ruler to be deposed is to lose big time in foreign policy conflict. Just like the Tsar with WW1 of Khrushchev with the Cuban crisis.

Russia can be understood pretty easily with just two core components:
                1. Strength. There is no narrative, no ideals, no coherent ideology even. All that matters is strength. Russia strong is the means, Russia strong is the ends. Frick prosperity, wealth, freedom, happiness, peace or progress - Stronk is all that matters.
                2. Russia has conducted eugenics on itself since the 15th century. They systematically culled all brave and honest on the frontline, by secret police or in camps. The only ones that survived/thrived were the cowards, colaborators, denunciators and brutes. Russians are cucks on a genetic level.

You are right. I'd also add the complete disbelief in any form of human agency. They are so accustomed to be ruled by despots that they consider it absolutely unthinkable for any people to wanting to decide their own fate, let alone doing it.

This is why they label all anti-Russian or anti-despot movements or revolutions worldwide as work of CIA, israelites or whoever is their current monster of the week. Some might think that this is just Russian propaganda, but they are wrong. Russians genuinely believe this. Because for them human being has no agency. In their mindset it's natural for the people to stoically accept everything, including when they are being massacred by their own government.

This is why they never revolted against the tsar when he was putting them into shackles of serfdom (Cossack rebellions were notable as being started and organized by free people) or against Stalin who put them into gulags.

              Either water or mining damage.

Water can wash away the dirt under the road during a flood. Which leads to this kinda damage. If there's significant mining in the area, old shafts can collapse and have the ground rapidly sink super localized.

We had that kinda damage a lot in my area, it looks just like that and you might as well just rebuild the entire part of the road that is affected.

Those are cabled bridges. Cabled bridges are comparatively cheap in construction (which is why the Soviets built them that way), but the tension isn't held by the concrete, buuuuuut ... the cables within the concrete.

And if those cables get cut or tensioned the bridge itself becomes ridiculously unstable. Civilian vehicles up to two tonnes can make it (we've got footage), but run a couple 40-tonnes T-72 or supply trucks over it, and it will collapse and be completely unusable.

If you have the plans for the bridge it only takes you a couple weeks to repair the damage - in peace times, that is. But AFAIK they don't have the plans, and these are not peace times.

Yes. The steel underneath is what's holding you between the supports. Enough to support larger vehicles but only just.

That's unironically pretty normal for Excalibur rounds. Considering that in some of the videos we see what the ground below the bridge looks like, I think that those were used (or at least some kind of precision artillery, not rockets).

see, unlike the stormtroopers, the NATO weapons actually *are* this precise. the ukrainians were sending the russians a message to get out while they still can - not only were the holes in a perfectly straight line down the bridge, but they were precisely spaced down the bridge as if they had been punched by a machine (which I guess they were).

it will be mariupol all over again.

not encircled, not encircled, encircled, strategic retreat, defeat.

Retreating from Keef was unironically the smartest thing Russia did this entire war. It was also still relatively "early" into the war, so it could be excused and ignored. After all Mariupol and other gains followed.
Kharkiv was already much more difficult to break to the Russian public. Milbloggers were fuming. There was genuine unhappiness and unrest among normies on social media.
Snake Island was just as bitter, it was immediately being meme'd as another "goodwill gesture", milbloggers were pissed, normies apathetic.
With 3 major "goodwill gestures", a Kherson goodwill gesture would probably do horrible damage to Russian morale. They simply can not do that. I genuinely think they'll rather turn Kherson into rubble to show how le evil gay hato ukronazis are genociding poor slava poccia, than abandon it.

There's a flaw with the Russian scheme there.

If the collaborators even suspect the Russians are going to blow up Kherson with THEM still in it, they'll turn on the Russians to save their own asses.

So the Ukrainians can clearly hit the bridges, why don't they just destroy them completely? Why do they keep making these holes?

      Anonymous

Many possible reasons. Could be they tried, got counterbatteried and genuinely couldn't finish the job.
Could also be a literal golden bridge. Better the Russian subhumans frick off on their own, than to cause more suffering for the civies.
Personally, I'd honestly be worried knowing my back is to a massive river with a single bridge the Ukrops can reliable and accurately hit whenever they like.

        Anonymous

My main thought on it is that they’re observing the bridges somehow, and they pick the times when there aren’t any civilians around so as to avoid killing innocents. That’s the last thing you want to do in this situation, like a massive hostage rescue.

          Anonymous

Yep.They most likely have drone vision on the bridge(s). I even remember seeing some footage, but it might have been old.
You can't really time these things though. Shell arrival takes time, in that time a column of literal orphanage busses can pull up from nowhere.

Personally, I think the two most likely theories are: They literally lack the ammo and / or capacity to finish the job. Or. They want to scare the Russians into leaving.
Frick, even a combination of the two is possible - maybe they're bluffing and shot what they could reliably shoot and now they're hoping Russia will piss off.

            Anonymous

            >They want to scare the Russians into leaving

why bother commiting a ton of munitions if a couple missiles do the job just as well

      Anonymous

Destroying bridges without proper demolition teams is really, really hard. Anyway, leaving them intact enough to allow light traffic out could be a benefit. Give them a way to retreat, but not a way to drive more tanks in.

        Based Charlie Magne Poster

        It's a solid plan.

Russia just lost a TON of heavy weapons and Ukraine hasn't even gone in yet. The Vatniks will have to leave them all behind.

Since the Ukrainians have learned to function as infantry on steroids, they'll just walk into Kherson.

      Anonymous

As others have said, these bridges were built using a very specific method that saves a fair bit of money by using substantially less concrete and rebar. The downside is that if anything happens to the steel wires underneath the bridge, its carrying capacity goes from dozens of tons to maybe a handful of tons. That means putting tanks over the bridge could drop it; even fully-laden supply trucks might be enough to take it out.

This all but eliminates the ability of the RAF to make up for tanks lost on the west side of the river, and dramatically reduces its ability to supply the troops and tanks already there. The river is absurdly wide at this point, so pontooooooning is questionable, and while ferries can help, the amount of material they can ship across each day is a fraction of what the bridge could handle (plus, ferries large enough to matter are potential targets for drones--or even GPS-guided artillery in the several minutes they're sitting still while loading or unloading).

  22. 2 years ago

Yes. He was trying to qualify as a lawyer and people were reporting him for ethical standards due to denying war crimes, so he performed a gesture of good will and advanced in reverse away from twitter.

ah yes, those missiles that have been regularly hitting critical logistical hubs for weeks? nah we dont need to intercept them, even though we could get them all if we wanted, we just dont.

didn't they shoot down their own SU-34M and SU-35 while HIMARS was being flying towards them assuming it was the rockets lmao

This was after the Ukrainians took out an AA radar, lol. Another thing to add to Ukraine's HIMARS Krampus hit list: the anti-air radar systems of the Vatniks.

I saw a telegram post saying 2k Russian soldiers are encircled near Kherson, is there any truth in this?
The post said the Russians are negotiating for a corridor so they can leave the encirclement.

      Anonymous

nah, it seems exaggerated from what I was reading. the city is surrounded on 3 sides but not encircled and there is only around 1 BTG + stragglers in the city.

Mostly rumours and no actual evidence from the ground yet. 2k is probably too much, other sources talk about 250 soldiers.
Also no actual encirclement, but Russians seem to be surrounded on 3 sides, with the only way out being 6km of open fields and no cover.

      >The post said the Russians are negotiating for a corridor so they can leave the encirclement.
A guy posted his assessment on twitter, saying there -could be- an encirclement soon.
Then another guy aped it, saying there was going to be an encirclement.
Then someone else picked it up, saying there was an encirclement.
And then someone said a 1000 soldiers were encircled.
Then someone said 2000 soldiers were encircled.

TL;DR: Never happened. Shitty game of telephone and shitty source checking.

Actually last news is that there are some stranded Russian units there cut off form supplies because all access points are covered by Ukrainian artilery. Infantry can still escape the town especially during the night because the "cauldron" is not closed but they are in a bad situation nontheless.

are you moronic, or just pretending for the lulz? serious question, because those are the only two options. that's the inhulets bridge they're crossing, on the road heading NE towards vysokopillia where the hohols are hilariously claiming to have cauldroned 3 russian BTGs.

What a long exposed drive. Shame if it something were to happen to it, lol. It only takes HIMARS about 90 seconds to reach a target.

Wouldn't shock me. The Ukrainians know its importance to the Russians. The Russians are being cornered in Kherson and they KNOW it.

They freaked out on /misc/ when I said it, lol. They're really riled up.

tell it to google maps, apparently it doesn't know that. but you do know that there are lots of roads in that area right? and that since it's summer and there's no mud the trucks and tanks can just roll across the open fields if they need to right? but do go on about how the russians crossing the supposedly "destroyed" inhulets bridge heading for the front means they're really fleeing kherson. it's almost as funny as all the other hohol lies.

Russians are trapped in Kherson. All escape routes are covered by HIMARS. No heavy armor is getting out ALIVE.
