also how expensive is your bonding? trying to figure out the logistics for when i get my license.

Bonding or insurance? They’re both pretty cheap compared to what you’ll make. Insurance is like $800 a year and also covers bonding, which is next to nothing maybe $50 a year.

          33. And yes, he did. I got my license just ahead of that rule.

cool thats good to hear. i had an old coworker who said he got a quote for insurance and bonding of like $1k a month, which still isnt bad compared to what youll be making, but thats a lot more than $800 a year.
what's your plan moving forward? every electrical contractor ive worked for has told me that if i get my license theyll fire me. do you still have a job in the mean time or do you have money saved up or what?

Jumped ship as soon as I got my license with a stay at home wife and a 1 yo baby and ~$7000 in credit card debt with nothing more at my back than a home equity line of credit &a good credit score. I didn’t have to touch the HELOC and I’ll be debt free next month. It’s only been a few months since I’ve started my own business

what is your business right now? i know in the OP you said you wanted to get into motor controls but im guessing in the meantime youre doing resi/commercial work? im also assuming its just you right now? and how hard is it getting leads?

Almost entirely residential. It’s grating and I hate it but boy does it pay the bills. I do no advertising, everything so far has been referrals. I tried Angie’s list/home advisor. Steer clear of those types of companies that charge you “per lead” you don’t need them and they’re not worth it. A lot of my work comes from a friend of mine who owns a pool store (many electricians won’t touch pool equipment) and two GCs I’ve also been long time friends with, as well as a large family. So I guess my advice would be build a good network. Don’t burn any bridges no matter how insignificant they may seem at the time. Got buddies who do go to college? Go to their parties, make friends with their friends you never know which one of them will be a useful connection a few short years down the road. Also every contractor I’ve ever worked for has encouraged me to get my license, I’m sorry that’s been your experience.

that's funny because I'm pretty well versed in article 680 for that reason too. I have to sell all my work, and I have to meet a quota each week, so I can't afford to turn down work because I'm ignorant to the code. And building a network is what I'm trying to do right now too. I am trying to build up as many skills, buy as many useful tools that will make me money (not just for consumptions sake), and learn as much as I can so when I get my license I'll be ready to go into business. What part of jersey are you in if you don't mind me asking?

Hol up. You’re a first year electrician that has to sell your own work? Did I read that right?

I have 4 years of experience. Been an electrician since I was 18. Only started working for a company that's willing to sponsor me for the apprenticeship this year. I also fricking rock and make all the underachieving 30-40 something's feel inadequate.

Well dang rockstar, keep at it. What’s your annual income if you don’t mind me asking

I make $27/hr but I also get bonuses if I meet/exceed my weekly quota. I want more because Jersey is expensive, even south Jersey, but I can't see myself making more than $30/hr as a resi guy so I'm going for my license. So for the meantime I'm just gonna keep my head down and grind and not complain. It's rough out there. But I've talked to guys with 10+ years of experience who were making $24-25/hr and no bonuses so I don't feel so bad. I'm currently living with my parents and saving up for a rental property so I can get some passive income too.

it sure as shit feels that way but i am holding onto hope. i am in the position to put as much money as possible away so thats what im doing. like for example, look at this shithole i found just by doing a search on zillow. $250k, and you gotta put 25% down on an income property, so id have to put $63k down which is a lot, but ive got $30k in the bank already. so in a few years i think i could have $60-70k. are housing prices going be stable in that time though? probably not. but im being optimistic instead of pessimistic.

Escape Jersey while you can. I left long ago. The taxes mean you will never afford to retire there and will not be able to afford land in any quantity.

when i get my license i plan on leaving jersey. trust me. it's hell.

I’m not that poster I’m op but I’m strongly considering leaving this state as well. That being said why get your jersey license just to immediately leave jersey? You know it doesn’t reciprocate, right? Or are you just getting it for your resume?

                Anonymous

a lot of states will just make you take the tests again if you hold an out of state license instead of jumping through their bullshit hoops. i dont know the specifics for all 50 states but i know that a lot of states are like that. so the way i see it is if i get my license in jersey, i can work here for a few years, and then go to another state and just have to take the tests again and i can get my license there. i dont plan on leaving immediately. it depends on how things go honestly. but the fact that property values have more than doubled in the past 3 years doesn't bode well for me staying here. all fricking new yorkers/californians must fricking hang.

Eh jerseys license is notoriously hard to get, making it all the more valuable. But yeah, I’m headed out asap.
