What is the minimum altitude to drop one of these? Can the be used in pop-up bombing? The Ukraine air force hasn't had much luck penetrating very deep recently, though that might change if the Russians start running low on R-37s

      Anonymous

you can lob them just like any other guided bomb

        Anonymous

That's the magic of JDAM. All of its guidance is self contained so the plane carrying them only has to go high altitude long enough for it to release the bombs and it can duck back down to low altitude.

Except that all current Ukrainian Aircraft have no choice but to fly at 50-100m altitudes because of fears of being sniped by MiG-31 carrying R-37s, which can launch their missiles without having to enter Ukrainian air space thanks to how long range the R-37s are coupled with the high altitude and speeds that the MiG-31 can reach: https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/a-mig-29-pilots-inside-account-of-the-changing-air-war-over-ukraine

i believe you, but how? NATO AWACS can't see that far into Russia. And last I checked most of Ukraine's air losses recently came from very long range air to air missiles that automatically acquire a lock, even against stuff close to the ground.

as for the bombs, my guess is Ukraine is going to lob these from like 10k feet. A plane can get up there in less than 30 seconds, then descend again

Right? Someone in the US is probably watching a live satellite feed of the ground crew preping the migs for take off and already have ukraine alerted the moment wheels leave the runway.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Russia has potential R-37 launchers in the air 24/7, especially since it can also be launched from SU-35 and SU-57 aircraft as well

If Russia had aircraft with R-37 in the air 24/7 in all parts of the front Russia would have no airforce in 6 months. Russia cannot maintain that level of commitment and not start suffering catastrophic vehicle failures. According to British intelligence Russia reduced number of sorties per day to low tens

Question: how does losing one AWACS in Belarus affect NiG-31 operation?

            Anonymous

They have been regularly using airbases in Belarus to launch AWACS and MiGs from. Taking out an AWACS puts a lot more strain on any other AWACS in the area, or if no other AWACS are available to cover the gap then you lose AWACS coverage for however long it takes to replace the AWACS or bring one in from somewhere less important.

All JDAMs can be used with toss bombing but on MiG-29s/Su-27s it might depend on their implementation. I imagine they would since there's not much point giving them to Ukraine if you need to be dropping it wings level at high altitude.

You know how the Russians have been using choppers as indirect artillery support by pulling up suddenly while firing off their rocket pods on ballistic arcs?

Well now the Ukrainians can do the same with planes and bombs, except the bombs stand a very good chance of actually hitting things thanks to the smart bomb packaging. Sometimes you just really need to drop a big fricking bomb on something.

To be fair, I think some of these helicopters were actually designed to do that and have a fire computer to time the rockets.

        Bigger payload, cheaper.
Logistic might be easier, airbases are further from the front and closer to railroad network.

It didn’t because the west didn’t and still doesn’t have the tech to manufacture their own radar systems. It would be smart not to put it because Yknow, pissing out EM waves is fricking stupid cause Yknow, “stealth”. They actually lucked out by not being able to make it though because I guarantee they’d think it would be smart to put it on the plane anyways.

Yes, bigger payload with better range and accuracy. A single 500lb precision strike can accomplish more than a salvo of HIMARS can. Consider that you can equip JDAMs to bombs that weigh in excess of 2000+ pounds and you start to see how JDAM being introduced into Ukrainian armament can be a problem for the Russians.

      Anonymous

You could argue the same for drones, but a lot times they simply aren’t enough to actually knock out a tank or a heavy fortification and they go back into service shortly after being hit. With a Jdam they’re gone for good.

So in trying to find out more about what the range on one of these might be in a pop-up attack I ended up looking at a few sim forum posts from a while back and it's funny to see how people were absolutely insistent that conditions like what we see in Ukraine would just never happen:

    >You're absolutely right that an unopposed scenario is unlikely against a near-peer adversary, but ... you are equally unlikely to ever go into any hostilities alone and unafraid. From what I read in various forums, there are a lot of people who hold on to the erroneous idea that you'll ever "go it alone" in a high threat environment.
    >If your target site is well defended (IADS and fighters), you're going to be part of a large force strike. First, there will be a coordinated TLAM strike...with enough missiles to do major damage to the local air defenses, if not outright destroy them.

This reminds me of how everybody used to claim that flying low was no defense against modern SAM/radar, yet what do we see in Ukraine? Everybody hugging the dirt.

To be fair, when you have a competent first world military, both of those are true. No one really concerned themselves with what it would look like for this war for the same reasons no one is considering African bush wars when talking about tank sims, since they're just so far divorced and alien from the reality that a NATO force would experience.
