ITT: underrated firearms

Firearms that were/are good but didn't achieve success.
I start with the Walther MPL.
Reportedly shooting as good as the MP5 but with direct blowback and much cheaper. The MP5 won tho.

The only reason the MPL/K flopped was because it had the misfortune of being released a year before the MP5 did.

How heavy is it? The thing I liked most about shooting the MP5 was that the weight made the recoil feel nonexistent

      6.6lbs (MPL) vs 5.6 of the MP5.
The MP5 is a better smg no doubt but way more expensive

        >be literally every smg manufacturer besides HK
        >hmmm this government wants an SMG so they have a weapon that's smaller, lighter, and more controllable than their service rifles
        >it's just a pistol caliber so we won't bother designing an actually good operating mechanism
        >wtf why won't anyone buy our smg that weighs and recoils just as much as their service rifle
        >repeat until smgs become obsolescent
If this was your competition, you'd charge beaucoup bucks for your cheap stamped gun too

And yet HK released the UMP45 because there is still demand for cheap pistol caliber SMGs...

various bureaus and depts needed the newest models out to scam govt funds like welfare queens, and HK delivered.

well if you need a compact short barrel automatic gun you will pick up a pistol caliber SMG.
SBRs shoot cartridges not designed for short barrels.
PDWs of the '90s in 5.8 or 4.6 turned out to be useless in military contexts because body armours got better, and too weird and expensive for police use.
So it's a full circle back to the good old SMG, especially if you are on a tight budged. Cheap pea shooters, cheap ammo that do the job on criminals and peasant militias.

                >SBRs shoot cartridges not designed for short barrels.
That doesn't matter though, because it turns out a 5.56 from a 10.3" barrel still is infinitely more effective than a 9mm from a 20" barrel. You can't escape that fact and that is why SMGs have always sucked, and died the death they deserved.

                Anonymous

                >10.3"
yeah now try a 4" barrel

                Anonymous

Except SWAT teams aren't using the MP5K, the reason they use shorter barrels is because a carbine/rifle is unwieldy in a confined environment.
There has been a clear trend towards moving away from the SMG and moving towards the SBR. A 10" AR SBR isn't considerably longer than an MP5A2 to the point where it's adequate for the environment, and the benefits in having a rifle cartridge outweigh the additional compactness of an MP5.
                >butwhatabout overpenetration
Modern 5.56 hollow points are adequate for this.
                >butwhatabout concealment
Not a concern for law enforcement, any time you need to conceal you will likely be using a pistol anyways
                >butwhatabout executive protection
PDWs are better than either in this regard.
                >butwhatabout concussion/noise

The APC9K that the US Army adopted has a 4.3 in barrel, which is SHORTER than the MP5K's barrel.

in 01 my then local sheriff's dept SWAT sold ALL their MP5s off, bought the UMP45, then sold the UMP45s a year later, and bought all new in box MP5's. I was 20 or 21 when the owner of my FLGS made the sale. he told us about it when my dad bought his original SL8. he said several counties did the same thing and or Benelli M4's and buying fancy pistols for SWAT.

HK made the UMP to get better profit margins, and then they were assmad about the MP5 still being more popular and begrudgingly released the MP5-MLI

The mags have been fine in my experience, and the trigger slap is a feature, not a bug, dumbass, if you hold your finger straight inside the trigger guard, it bumpfires and turns into full auto

        >You MUST use a strap hanger, DO NOT just throw a VFG on there, that's ILLEGAL
        >You MUST have nothing on the barrel or use the fake suppressor, DON'T just buy a Chinese solvent trap
        >DON'T buy the folding stock from MPA, that would make it an SBR! Although MPA really doesn't give a shit who they sell them to

I feel like the Benelli M3 is underrated
    >Ignored by people who want a semiauto for the M4, 1301, A300, or turkshit if they're poor and moronic
    >Ignored by people wanting a pump/semi hybrid for the SPAS
    >Ignored by PDs for pump actions, convertibles just aren't that useful plus pumps are like a third the price
Not to say the M3 is a flop, it's seen some sales and is used by a few military and police units but you'd think a SPAS-12 but lighter, cheaper, and easier to use would sell like hotcakes but I guess the SPAS mostly sold on its aesthetics amd media fame and less for its unique gimmick

I feel like the Tavor 7 is underrated. Aside from being a little heavy for what it is, it’s more comfortable to shoot than the Scar or any AR10 I’ve shot more than a few rounds through. I’ll agree with bullpups largely being a meme platform, but this is one of the few shining successes IMO. Extremely reliable, smooth running, clean, and ergonomic as frick. 9/10 would highly recommend.

The tavor 7 is extremely underrated. Idk why you cucked out thinkin bullpups are memes because the tavor 7 is the only battle rifle you can shoot one handed, CQB with, and plink from afar all in 1 package.

We all heard of it but it didn't do as good as it could've. I say a simplified version that stuck to the LMG configuration would've been idea. At the time, Stoner basically decided
    >Alright, you buttholes all want make a gun that does everything? Well here you go!

That existed, in several generations like the Stoner 86, Stoner LMG, KAG LMG

    The MACs also I think.
Too specialised (biggest firepower in the smallest package) to be widespread.
Especially the 11, it is essentially an assassin-covert-VIP protection tool and that's it.
Same for the Micro Uzi, possibly even the Mini Uzi (that is however the best one in this category).

The LF-57 and the M-76 were even cheaper, guns like this just werent wanted at that point. If it couldnt be as compact as a Mini Uzi or the Mac-10 why even make it pistol caliber?

The world was much less globalised back then so to have a domestic production was preferable.
Compact SMGs are niche guns with limited effective range and controllability (doesn't help that they have frick high RPM because of the reduced bolt mass).
In the '70s pistol calibers were still considered very effective since body armours were nothing like they are nowadays.
