ITT: Fallout?

in this thread, we discuss the fictional and real-world FIREARMS AND WEAPONS depicted in the Fallout franchise, as well as any military related technology, wars, campaigns, or speculation about any of these things.
here's a few tidbits of /k/ related fallout canon to start this off
>Glock, apparently. exists. and a Gaston Glock AI was still coming up with weapon ideas pre-war, including the Plasma Pistol.
>the P94 Plasma Caster is stated as being manufactured by Winchester.
>various weapons which were merely prototypes in our world were at some point pressed into actual service in the FO-verse. such as the H&K G11 and the Pancor Jackhammer, as well as the H&K CAWS
>the Desert Eagle also still apparently exists in the Fallout universe

3 and 4 really stray from the real setting of Fallout. They were not “Nuked back to Cavemen”. Yes the cities and whatnot were obliterated. But the vaults let the survivors to skip over rediscovering technology. The early enclave, NCR, and Brotherhood were able to set to advance land and manufacturing nearly on day 1. The NCR had full on government, vehicles, factories, taxes, farms, and organized government. Fallout 3 and 4 act like the bombs fell yesterday, still allowing the player to discover pre war foods just sitting around where people left them, untouched. I like that theme and all but it’s so inconsistent.

always hated that aspect of 3/4.
i *guess* it sort of kinda makes sense why everything in 3 would be more primitive and less civilized than, say, California. because DC should have reasonably been hit WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY harder than pretty much any other major city. really. i don't see how the White House or anything is still standing. NV may as well have been designed by /k/ tards with the amount of actual firearms they put into it, and things like This Machine sound like we literally came up with it or something

I've been popping heads with Catherine's Sniper rifle using hand loaded jacketed soft point ammo, and a mod that makes it so armor works more and you take/give more damage, so my .45-70 weapons almost always make an unarmored head explode

it does make the mutants a little easy to kill but honestly I don't think even a deathclaw is going to just unflinchingly take 40 rounds of .308 AP to its face... but if you DO let one get to you it just instantly kills you regardless of what you have on lmao

      >rely on a service rifle set up with a 20” barrel and carbine stock (not that it actually matters but if armored infantry used service rifles they’d 100% be running collapsing stocks)
I like to imagine the only reason the MC survives fallout 4 is because of his prior experience killing chinks/canucks (same thing) with power armor and getting stupidly lucky finding the suit in concord. His mil experience is also why the player doesn’t need PA training beforehand

You don’t need to imagine it. That’s what it is. He has power armor training. The dumb part is every other moron settler or raider also used power armor. It’s all over the fricking place. I get that it’s how the player is supposed to collect more power components, but it makes no fricking sense. In every other game it’s nearly impossible for anyone other than brotherhood or enclave to own and operate power armor. In New Vegas the NCR could only use the shell as heavy non powered armor. The NCR couldn’t even figure it out. But dumb drugged up raiders have it all over the place?

What I hate about Bethesda introducing new armor types is they don’t do sidegrades, its always straight upgrades even though T-51, T-60, T-65, and X-01 were all introduced within a year of the bombs falling. T-51 is neglected especially hard because it isn’t bethesda’s creation and its only in the leveled list of fallout 4 very briefly. To handwave why there’s so many available suits in the commonwealth it probably has something to do with boston being a major tech development center judging from all the corporate offices. The amount of suits in branded paintjobs is moronic though, especially nuka cola getting their hands on fricking X-01

            Anonymous

76 rebalanced T-51 to be competitive to the T-60 rather than the T-60 being a straight upgrade, but both are outmodded by the T-65 in turn.

So ive been thinking about the manufacturing capability of the commonwealth, if you ignore the magical bullshit machines you can build in settlements its literally worse than the 1700s, back then you at least had workshops producing stuff on an industrial scale and basic mechanisation
Meanwhile in the commonwealth in fallout 4 one of the most advanced tools a settlement has is a mini lathe and there might be a blacksmith at every other, other settlement, so no wonder everything is so shit, they almost literally got nuked back to the stone age
So that got me thinking, say you are building a militia in such a backwards shithole, what would be the best standardised equipment you could give out to your soldiers?
    Im thinking
    >steel armor, mainly chest plates that can stop small calibers(not hard, you think thats real smokeless?) and sometimes give out arm and leg armor incase of mutants or machete raiders
    >the least rusty pre war guns you can find and supply, i dont trust the commonwealths gunsmiths
    >uniform would probably have to be made out of leather because recycling 200 year old fabric is moronic, idk how that would turn out
    Anyone got better ideas?

Its worth noting F3 and F4 are backwards shitholes for reasons beyond just the nukes. Both are plagued by supermutants that keep the locals from progressing past the tribal warfare phase and this was an issue in fallout 1 as well, and the commonwealth got hit especially bad because boston got hit by a mini-nuke MIRV judging from the large craters all over the map and the main warhead landed directly on top of a nuclear power plant and spat out a frick ton of fallout from it which is why you have the glowing sea 200 years later

I liked FO 4, but the weapon designs were objectively shit.
None of them look like a weapon SHOULD.
The combat rifle was a fricking PCC, the "assault rifle" looked like a water-cooled LMG of some sort, the laser and plasma weapons are so freaking bulky and ugly they ALMOST managed to make the 10mm look good, but fell short of that goal, too.

This. The customization was cool for like 10 minutes until you realized it really wasn’t much. Pipe weapons become obsolete within an hour of playing. There’s no regular rifle, pump action shotgun, smg. And the lack of ammo types was really boring. The only thing they got right was power armor. The TV show makes the assault rifle un-moronic by making it more like a heavy MG for power armor infantry, which is what it was designed to be ingame before they fricked it into the dirt for balancing

I unironically like Bethesda's basic laser rifle for just being a big frickoff box. Even there they fall victim to their own moronation with it though, as the gun looks worse and worse the more you upgrade it and eventually transforms into a fat pig with a bunch of wibbly shit stapled to it.

Yeah, the customization seems like it would be cool on paper but then you get into the game and it turns out 'customization' is actually code for 'required upgrades that make your gun uglier' and 'also we didn't bother including more than eight guns because attachments let us lazily fill out the design space.' You wind up with less actual variety in both looks and gameplay than we had in New Vegas because Bethesda insists on reinventing the wheel every time instead of iterating on proven ideas.

Fallout 4 guns being abominable doesn't mean you can't make realistic/theme appropriate fake/futuristic guns. I think Obsidian did very well with it the grenade machinegun and 12.7mm SMG for example, and even Bethesdas 10mm pistol and SMG looked fine.

Same reason the FO4 rocket launcher went from a chonky as frick break action... thing to a sheet metal bazooka with stabilization fins welded onto the back; Bethesda's art department only has a very vague idea of how guns work or why features exist IRL.

I suspect they used a reference gun with a slide release and fire selector and just slapped two levers onto the side of the pistol without understanding what they really were or how the shooter is supposed to interact with them. Why they completely changed up the slide profile and made the gun all bulbous I'll never know.

Losing Adamowicz clearly hurt them with 4's art direction. You can see with the 10mm from 3/NV that while it wasn't perfect it doesn't have the unnecessary feel that the 10mm pistol from 4 has, even with the big area below the barrel that serves little purpose. F4NV shows that it can still work in the better graphics, no reason to change it outside of Bethesda's need to change things for the sake of change.

The one from 3 was in retrospect a pretty smart design. Presumably it has a fixed barrel and the reciprocating pseudo-slide/bolt instead of a full slide is to cut down on moving mass. Both of those together would increase accuracy. It's like one of these crossed with a Deagle brand Deagle.

The general line in 4 is that a lot of the guns almost work... but they're oddly big or their proportions are otherwise fricked somehow. The Combat Rifle is an easy example with it having a thick as frick barrel more in line with the twelve gauge Combat Shotgun than a .45acp PCC. Even if you rechamber it to .308 it's still got a wildly oversized barrel compared to what it oughtta be. I've seen the visual described as 'Fischer Price' and I think that's a real accurate way to put it. Everything in 4 feels plastic and too big except the PA.

everything is weirdly proportioned because of the PA. if it wasn't weirdly bulky it would look like a toy in PA hands, which conversely means it looks ridiculous in human hands. the only real solution would be having PA exclusive weapons, and preventing the player from using normal small arms while wearing PA. could be handwaved by a lack of dexterity or something. but the other games establish that PA users can use normal weapons, so the art department did what they did.

It isn't just the guns. The layered armor system suffers from the same problem. And in some respects I also think it's a texturing issue of some kind. The material used for clothes always manages to remind me of a synthetic tarp even when NPCs are clearly just wearing flannel shirts or something. It extends to skin and such too, with all the NPCs giving me wax museum vibes.

Another thing pointing to this not just being a PA issue: Starfield has all the same problems. Huge guns that make no sense, uncanny valley faces, and ugly armor. Although the proportions of the suits don't seem as egregious since they're all one piece.

I strongly suspect that they were going to have two separate weapons for normal use and power armor use. However due time and balancing issues, they decide to consolidate. Which explains the chunkyfy of everything. The other reason would be for sure first person visual direction. Clearest example being the left handed bolt action. Same school of thought from skyrim with paddle swords.

In the first game, what reason is there to use energy pistols, except the lasgun at the very start? By the time you have the option of buying a plasma pistol, you should be getting your kamakazie turbo plasma rifle that fires 5 110 damage bolts per turn.

          Anonymous

Not much of one really, you should have your laser rifle and plasma rifle when the pistols start showing up. 2 is a bit better with it with the first energy weapon you can find being a laser pistol but you'll probably have a plasma rifle in no time. One nice thing about a lot of the 2 total conversions is that they tend to have early energy weapons that aren't endgame scaled for energy weapon builds. Nevada for example has a plasma pistol you can get first town that is a bit on par with a 10mm, as well can be upgraded.

          Anonymous

you can find a plasma pistol at Necropolis which you can go to with zero challenge from the very start of the game, the only real issue is finding more ammo for it but they sell that at the Hub
it's not really viable for a first playthrough but if you know what you're doing you can do this to get by with Energy Weapons as your only tagged combat skill

    >removing DT in newer games for DRslop
one of the only strengths of locational damage systems is operating with damage threshhold and "health" as an abstraction of the ability to keep fighting while injured. They were almost close with item degradation of power armor from damage taken, almost, but sanded everything down into just being annoyances.

The perfect fallout game would make prewar armor systems exchange health damage for item damage up to certain weapon calibers/damage sources, post war junk armor stopping only DT'ing some melee damage, with power armor being king and "immune" to most smallarm fire and melee damage from all but the most equally terrific prewar weapons and abominations... or getting ganked by dynamite. The kind of thing that encourages smart gameplay and resource conservation over there just being best in slots.

Maybe if microsoft forces a BoS3 spinoff they could make another studio make something interesting in the franchise that rides that line between grounded and hyperrealism through prewar technology. Playing a FPS across multiple characters/running squads where you have some guys fully kitted and others there to put down damage or draw aggro with their accounted for deaths. Like Tarkov, hunt showdown, etc. but normiefied towards "accessibility" instead of being totally autistic, preserving the idea that you don't want to lose a good trained character with top tier gear on some low end farming objective when a guy in post war metal melee defense armor with a rifle has 75% the same chance against the likely threat of ghouls and lightly armed scavengers even if he'd take a sucking chest wound from a square on rifle shot.

This might be a controversial opinion especially on this board but I hated the gun customization in Fallout 4. It takes away from its RPG elements. Fallout is supposed to focus on your characters build (stats and perks) as opposed to how gucci your gun is.

New Vegas had the right idea with being able to add mods to your gun and crafting ammo but beyond that was too much.

      Anonymous

Your gun build in F4 *is* part of your character build, anon. In much the same way that you might go for a specific magic item or weapon type to make your TTRPG build work, in F4, you go for specific gun parts and legendary effects to make your build work. The difference just being that gun part drops aren't up to GM fiat, but are fully mechanized via scrap & perk investment, while legendary effects still offer the gambling high of getting a good base / effect combo.

        Anonymous

        >GM fiat
Guns in 4 are way more GM fiat than in New Vegas due to how Bethesda handles level lists. You can't craft attachments much earlier than they can be found in the world due to both loot and perks getting level gated. Mostly it's just for cutting out the RNG middleman.

Weapons in New Vegas usually exist as part of the environment or narrative.
        >NCR dudes have mostly old and simple Old World weapons to reflect their ultra standardization and attempts to LARP as a pre-war nation
        >Legion has a preponderance of melee and thrown stuff because they don't have native manufacturing but the higher rank you go the more high tech salvage you find in the hands of Ceasar's trusted men, ranging from plasma guns to thermic lances to C-4
        >The White Legs stumbled onto a huge national guard cache of tommy guns so it's what they've got
        >Sinclair was an autist who wanted to revive the roaring 20s so he made his security walk around with magnum revolvers and Colt Monitors
Guns in Fallout 4 are just stat sticks with no character, and the only vaguely faction related weapons are the Institute lasers (which are just bad) and maybe the railspike launcher. Everyone else just rolls around with a smattering of everything with randomly generated attachments depending on how high level your PC is, which is as fiat as it gets.

Bethesda made their squared space double barrel shottie eject unspent 8mm kurz cartridges in starfield.
After noticing I paid attention to the shotgun every time it was shown in a trailer, they would just cut before the reload.
When the game released they made the shotgun caseless and now it doesn't eject anything, problem solved.

I mostly just hate adding a receiver changes how much your gun damages the enemy or infuses the bullets with plasma, or converts them into armor piercing. it's absurd. the supressors are ridiculous too, you'd think an rpg would benefit from supressors that lost effectiveness the more powerful the cartridge by now.

      Anonymous

Not as controversial as you might think. Bethesda's implementation wound up being an excuse to only include like eight guns of various levels of ugly which really hurts the player's ability to LARP like they could in New Vegas.
      >grungy grunt or commando aesthetic with old world/NCR guns
      >cowboy guns all over the shop for gunslinger fun times
      >retrofuture handguns for the new-age shootist and Bladerunner LARP
      >all sorts of melee weapons, allowing you to choose exactly where you fall on the techno-barbarian spectrum
      >various flavors of lasers and explosives to suit your high tech exterminator tastes
Meanwhile Fallout 4 has like three or four flavors of rifles that are all ugly, the pipe weapons that look worse than Kypher Pass specials, bad heavy weapons, super limited explosive weapons, and all the automatics suck.

      https://i.imgur.com/6qUsz8L.jpeg

So as the "assault rifle" is for power armor, where are the mag pouches for it on the power armor?

They just didn't think about it, anon. Same reason it comes with a retro ACOG the user obviously can't actually look through. Although if you really wanted, you could argue these guys would be embedded in normal infantry formations and you'd have a dude handling your ammo for you while you mowed down commies. I know that's the approach they took in the show, even though the BoS has been rolling around with bigass miniguns as standard since FO1.

Considering Fallout 3 was just Oblivion with guns, that tracks. The only thing Fallout 4 has going for it is power armor feels good to use*

If you mod in a damage threshold to items, there's a bug that causes PA to take 0 damage from sources below it's DT. Honestly goes a long way to making it feel actually good.

Yeah, 4 is sort of the worst of both worlds. You can't bumrush a particular skill anymore because number-go-up is heavily level gated, so instead of just being the dude autistically focused on lockpicking you have to wait until level 18 to even get the option.

I don't understand the design behind FO4's level progression at all. It really does just look strictly worse than the preceding games.

It fully feels like they attempted to port what Skyrim did into Fallout but were handicapped since they also forced themselves to put everything into SPECIAL stats since that's a brand and also not doing the Elder Scrolls style of leveling. 4's perk system really feels like it should have the ES style where the more you do something the better you get, thus get the perks for it, but it doesn't so they just level gate it.

So as the "assault rifle" is for power armor, where are the mag pouches for it on the power armor?

      Anonymous

Words cannot describe how much I hate that thing and Todd is a fricking idiot for deciding that the assault rifle has to look fitting for power armor

Isn't the whole point of power armor in the fallout universe to use heavy weaponry? They were designed to be an alternative to tanks. Leave the small arms to regular infantry and give the big shit to power armor users

        Anonymous

Other anons are right. Certain weapons should have been power armor only or out of power armor only. In power armor, it works fine as a relatively small weapon for bringing fire superiority to bear in places you might not be able to manuver a M2 or a minigun, but still want something more substantial than just a regular infantry rifle or maybe even a laser rifle. Make it water cooled so you don't have to worry about trying to manage a quick change air cooled barrel in something as cumbersome as power armor and you might be on to something.

Still just like trying to use the PPK sized pistol or a switchblade is absurd in power armor, there's no damn way dudes out of power armor should be running around shooting that thing off the shoulder like it's an AR15.

Uniques with special models and a cool modifier are nice, especially if the item itself has a story.
A gun that magically turns your shotgun pellets into hand grenades is goofy shit and has no character because it was randomly generated by a background script; it's not special, it's just a lucky roll on a slot machine. It's not complicated

Random generation is boring, not just for guns, but for any asset. Thats why nobody gives a rats ass about the guns in borderlands, they carry no weight or significance beyond their stats, which are also totally fluid. Similarly, map generation is boring. Hand curated content is always better.

Man I would like to know more just how much of a horror show the NCR's wars with the Enclave and Brotherhood were. Like imagine just how hell the siege of Navarro was. You're going in with AR-15's against powered armored fricks armed with gauss rifles, plasma rifles, miniguns, and pulse rifles in an entrenched position with air support. Same for fighting the brotherhood and trying to storm their bunkers.

Imagine being some poor frick conscript who got the jump on a BoS knight. You take your salvaged 10mm SMG and spray his face with the whole mag and nothing happens. Then he just raises his gauss rifle like he's annoyed you even bothered to show up and rips you in half. Gawd damn being an infantryman in the NCR must be suffering.

I have to guess most of the NCR's success against the BoS is just down to spamming heavy weapon teams at them.
        >locate patrol

I guess that is some perk of my mom having me when she was 24. I am not too far behind her on the death timeline. Although given my health issues I'll be lucky to see 50, hell 45.

                >Bro, I was in college until I was 28. I only went part time so there is that. But still.
Maybe it's because most media and other shit glorifies late teens to early 20s, so being on the verge of christmas cake and having all my peers in classes be 18/19/20 and staying that young while I only get older probably doesnt help, by 2026 I will probably have legit a decade over these people and I'll still be here feasibly.

                >I guess that is some perk of my mom having me when she was 24. I am not too far behind her on the death timeline.

My mum had me at 21, and my grand mum was 50 when I was born, so they're 45 & 73 respectively, it's almost like perfect quarters (since I'm just at 24). But still best case scenario when my mum goes at like 80sish I'll be 61 and then have to live another 20 years without here, and that's with my grandmum going probably before 2040.

I know I probably sound like a b***h and this is a real strange thread to be illustrating my personal crisis, but I've had to be out of commission from school since like Feb on account of a really bad disc herniation stemming from my bone density going down since my eating habits are moronic ( I eat nothing because my major has me working almost 24/7 and regularly pulling 48 hr days). So being alone at home combined with seeing everyone my age already getting *fricking married* and having kids because apparently zoomers are anti kids / marriage until they are and when they are they're '50s tier get married in your 20s for some reason, makes me feel like shit because I'm half way through what most say is the "prime of youth" and I had basically the first 3 years eaten by COVID, school and outside factors

                >they pretend 18 is mature
its weird. I didnt get to enjoy my teenage years because I was between working internships at labs and offices every summer & concurrently with High School as well as doing College courses concurrently with High School. I thought when I'd get to college maybe I'd have more breathing room and be able to live a bit but I got exactly 1 year of normalcy before the world literally crashed & burned around me & peaceful protests reduced parts of my town / city to almost fricking Beth. Fallout levels of desolation & disrepair that still havent recovered (that I live right in the middle of one of those areas doesnt help either). Combined with everything being impacted and still having to pull the 16-18 and occasional full 48 hour day every semester because this shit is fricking hard and I'm competing with people zooted to the brim on adderall cramming for almost 3 days straight and basically making any grading curve non-existent. No gf since like 2018ish and only shitty semi casual things since then that werent fulfilling at all. I really only have my mum and grandmum whom I take care of and are both disabled themselves. So cue that + injury that has me out of commission and likely to spend my 24th birthday alone in my room while my peers I graduated with already have families and careers, I'd be lying if I said I wasnt having suicide ideation some days, and then pendulum to the irrational fear of my mortality and having to live in this world without the two people that have been my only source of unconditional love. And constant war shit on the news and zoomers burning campuses around me over nothing this decade fricking sucks.

Dude, its not that big of a deal. Finish when you finish, just don't take 8 years to get a bachelors like me. You'll see plenty of people of different ages in college. You probably just don't notice them.
                >My mum had me at 21, and my grand mum was 50 when I was born, so they're 45 & 73 respectively, it's almost like perfect quarters (since I'm just at 24).

There is no telling what tomorrow will hold. I also wouldn't think about that too much. There is no sense worrying about something you can't change.

You were meant to forget about old classmates and people you graduated with. Because once you got your HS diploma all of those people stopped mattering unless you actually knew them on a honest to god personal level like you hung out every weekend or after school every other day or w/e. I did it back in 2016 right after the elections and I never looked back, all you end up doing is comparing yourself to them and you are not them, and they are not you. Of anything I have said to anyone in life, please let this be the thing someone listens to.

Anon. I am still aware of the current happenings of the day. I am just not bombarded by it literally everytime I open my phone or am just lurking on here. Its not healthy for a human to worry about things or people that are not in our lives.

That's an achievement in itself given the Ukraine and Israel threads almost daily. Filters are a wonder I guess.

Still doesnt really fix the fact that even with no social media moronation beamed on my screen to me that I'm getting it beamed to my eyes IRL every time I have to go outside for something and hope to god I dont have that final spill that makes me a cripple. Lots of young people import themselves here to "my life a movie" at colleges around the state but specifically this place I am in. Thus it's extra concentrated here and moving is not an option until I finish this degree because otherwise I am shooting myself in the foot.

I've been in the middle of a month long existential / quarter life crisis because I turn 24 in two weeks and am still stuck in college, so hearing 32 is still considered young and not frick up age makes me feel a little better

The other element that hit me just as hard and doesnt have as easy of a fix is the idea that there's a good chance most of the people I love & care about around me rn will be dead and I will be some geriatric alone with no one.

(Especially my mum & grandmum. I dont want either to go but mum's loss will legitimately have me on the verge of ending myself)

Yeah but the TV show sucks and I don't care.

Yeah, I can kind of see what you mean. What's more confusing is that they also kept the same design going into Starfield which is... the worst of both worlds all over again, because you need to use skills to unlock the required challenges to get perks but you level up with a normal XP system and not via the normal Elder Scrolls method of using skills. When you get a perk point you may not have anywhere to actually put it because you haven't completed any other perk challenges.

Someone at Bethesda really needs to lay off the Jet and just chill for a bit on the progression systems. They keep making the actual methods of progressing a pain in the ass but the rewards they give out are also super miserly

                >Developed by the Department of Defense as early as 2072,[2] the original Vertibird was created as a multipurpose tiltrotor vertical take-off aircraft. While utilized early on in the days before the Great War, Hornwright Industrial got word of its development, and began planning the use of it for their own methods.[3] Following the success of the initial design, the military commenced work on a superior model, hoping to improve on virtually every aspect of the original: Better armor, better weapons, better speed and cargo capacity, everything. When the Great War struck in 2077, the XVB02 Vertibird was still in the prototype phase, scheduled to enter full military service in 2085.[1]

          >BoS starts off with broken airship as HQ that when upgraded to final tier is airworthy again and acts as a mobile base (similar to Necrons in Dawn of War)
          >BoS would have some land and air vehicles (slower vertibirds based off of the Fo4 design) but would be primarily centered around customizable squads of heavy infantry knights and paladins, with the player able to choose the armament of each squad member. For instance creating an anti infantry squad with miniguns and flamers, or anti heavy infantry with laser and gauss rifles.

          >Enclave has more specialized heavy infantry squads; anti infantry hellfire units, anti armor tesla units, tanky mutated infantry (think mini frank horrigans that are normal super mutant sized), along with basic heavy infantry in APA that have less versatility than their BoS counterparts.
          >Enclave lacks any land vehicles but makes up for it with high-speed vertibird gunships and transports (based off of the designs of Fo3 and Fo2 respectively). The playstyle would be around micro-ing specialized and expensive power armor units around, deepstriking them into enemy territory with your transports while supporting them with gunships.
          >Hero/Leader unit would be an secret service commando, who starts off as a standard looking enclave soldier who with each researched upgrade would slowly turn into a full on Frank Horrigan abomination

          >NCR has tons of mobilized infantry to throw at the enemy, supported by squad weapons like mortars and HMGs, some artillery, and ranger special forces to crack tin cans. They would have land vehicles like trucks and some chunky mad max looking APCs (think Syrian civil war), along with some barely air worthy planes. You would be pushing the frontline forward with massed infantry assaults supported by mortars and scavenged artillery while micro-ing rangers to take out the BoS paladin with a minigun who just cut down 25 troopers. Also having Colonel Reyes as a hero unit.

            >Legion has squads of Legionaries that are good at melee while still retaining ranged weapons. They would have various leaders to attach to squads with various buffs, if you need squads to hold down enemies in melee for longer attach a centurion, if you want to give your surrounding units more moral attach a vexillarius, etc.
            >Legion would also have access to tons of guerilla and terror tactics, planting bombs, sending in slave suicide bombers, and temporary area control with gas or radiation bombs. A Legion player could deal with attacking Enclave or Brotherhood by feigning a retreat into a road with planted C4, detonating them then picking off the stragglers with suicide bombers and frumentarii snipers.

    >and a Gaston Glock AI was still coming up with weapon ideas pre-war, including the Plasma Pistol.

Why? Glock firearms are not innovative or special, nor were they ever. It would have made more sense that a sam colt or john browning ai would be creating weapons.

A glock brand laser pistol seems on brand.
      >plastic
      >zero moving parts except the trigger
      >universal battery system is right there
      >no source of fouling or anything since it's just a fancy light bulb
You ruggedize it and it's essentially the perfect personal protection weapon that's as simple as possible. Seems right up his alley.

Yeah except the plasma pistol/ NV plasma defender was made by Glock.
IIRC the laser rifles and pistols in FO1/2 were made by Wattz Electronics. I forget who made the Gatling Laser.

How would you make a PA portable .50 browning? I mean mechanically, specifically the trigger mechanism. I remember hearing this configuration wouldn't work. I think a hip mount like the Aliens smart gun would be good for stability

      Anonymous

I'm no gunsmith or engineer, but that grip clearly wouldn't work because there's nothing connecting the grip to the trigger. If you wanted it done as simple as possible I'd bend a piece of metal over the top of the grip that run down the front of the grip. When you depress the bit of bent steel at the top with your thumb, the bottom edge of the steel part would actuate the trigger and fire the gun. Place a return spring under it so the gun stops firing when you release the mechanism and you should be good to go.

You could cheat and have an electric trigger but otherwise it would take some metal fabbing.

Probably not. Actually I think I've finally figured out what started the nuke exchange. Sig made the fatman launcher and Private Frickstick accidentally dropped it an accidentally'ed a whole battalion sparking a "retaliation" against the Chinese for "their" first strike.

Do you feel there would be significant military/police use for cyberdogs? What benefits can you imaigne they have over fully organic dogs outside being able to take more bullets?

      Anonymous

increased athleticism. More durability. I assume the cyborg brain would help with communicating exactly what you want. Longevity. bite strength. increased intelligence.

      Anonymous

Longevity is a big one, Rex has been running for 200+ years and only then needed a new brain. Pre-war they would basically be straight upgrades to k-9 programs. Post war if you get one to trust you you'll probably be set for a bit assuming you can keep their body functioning, and that seems doable.

You know that was one of my first thoughts too. But on the other hand, would invasive brain surgery be easier than just training the dog?

          Anonymous

Yes, because Fallout has autodocs that can largely automate brain surgery (as seen with Caesar, Big MT, and most of the facilities where robobrains exist, even in FO3 and 4)

Real life is weirder than fallout. I was just considering antman or the guy who used kill a different animals with an an every day.Or the anon who got the shotgun stuck in his ass. The various spree shooters and public disorder nuts, the electricity system vandals, the guy with the grenade toilet and the gas mask chemical warfare guy with the skin blisters. Then there is the gigantic laser guy who blinded himself. It has a rich history this place of self mutilation and prison.
