It was never the most powerful handgun in the world, though for a time it was the most powerful repeating handgun in factory production.

500 Bushwhacker has existed for some time now.

      454, 460, 480 etc.

500 bushwacker quite boutique, until a company factory produces it it shouldn't count.

        >it shouldn't count
It does count, OP never specified factory support. This same concept was true about 454 Casull when Harry Callahan lied about 44 Mag too.

If we're going to count anything that's ever been made, there are such things as elephant gun pistols. They're not supposed to be used for anything ever, and you'd have to source a quarter pound lead ball to pack them with, but they exist and probably fire if you're willing to risk your wrists.
Also the occasional 50 BMG racehorse "pistol".
Anything that's commercial is off the table when we include everything that exists.

No, OP specified a handgun cartridge, just because there are handguns that can chamber rifle cartridges doesn't make them also handgun cartridges.
500BW is a handgun cartridge, it would make a good rifle cartridge though.

              >it's still the most powerful handgun in the world
The word cartridge appears nowhere in that sentence. Ridiculous BP loads and rifle calibers are on the table.

Well then that narrows it down to 500 Bushwhacker.

wouldnt it be cool if harry was right? I want to believe that the .44 Magnum is the most powerful handgun in the world.

I’m excited to actually try it out.. but be forewarned anons…. The ticket is expensive…. Mid June/July to get the revolver back.. a few weeks for turnaround for the first 60 rounds..

160 rounds for $415? That's some expensive ammo, anon

I'm regarded, 100x of those are just boolits. What will cpr be when you reload it?

I’ve got 4k large magnum rifle primers stockpiled from an incredible deal I got from an estate sale. If we ignore powder price and keep reusing the casings then about .70 cpr…. But I’m probably going to load 50 bushwacker rounds and 50 500 magnums… I already have save brass for the magnum, and the die set fits both.. it’s expensive as hell.. reloading will help.. and I don’t think I’ll be going out and shooting 200 rounds a trip either…. Although before I sent out the BFR I ran 30 rounds through it and shot another 50 or so 454 rounds that day…. They’ve got 700 grain hardcasts that are about 1$ each…. Probably going to splurge for some, but first.. baby steps with the 400 grainers…

Is 700gr about the longest/heaviest bullet the BFR will stabalize?
I'd think the extra velocity from the BW would allow even heavier.

I think it’s probably just the biggest TII have tried that they feel comfortable selling to reloaders… they don’t offer it as a loaded round at the moment.. I suspect that gives them a certain margin of safety that it won’t end up in the hands of someone who doesn’t have a good understanding of what they’re about to fire.. those 600 grain +p+ rounds flipped my bfr slightly past 90 degrees… the brake will help, but it’s gonna be wild regardless.. theirs no way in hell I’d let someone shoot one of the bushwacker rounds let alone a heavy hardcast until they showed they could handle 500 magnum.. seems like if you didn’t understand it and somehow got the chance to try shooting it you’d be getting smacked in the face with a revolver…

                Pic related was these monsters

Pretty excited.. wanted the gun for a long time, wanted to get into reloading for a long time.. finally getting to do both. Also glad I saved all my 38/357/45lc/454/500 brass…. Got about 500 once fired 454 casings…. Gotta buy small rifle magnum primers for those though.. but even at 160$ shipped for 1k plus probably another 60 cpr per bullet that’s gonna be a hell of a deal for that much 454 considering I average about 2-3$ per round buying new if we’re ignoring shipping

Yes, when you say "Most powerful handgun in the world", dumb one offs do count Black person.

There’s a weird revolver chambered in 500 nitro express, but technically the biggest “pistol” would probably be a Thompson encore one of that was made in 600 nitro express.. https://youtu.be/--h6i7Af8Qo?si=jd2x-M-M04BmM9FY

Although I bet if you chronographed it the 500 nitro express barrels (which are generally longer) on an encore pistol frame probably put more energy into the round than the 600 does…
