They did capture the banner. Ridiculous performance by Russia, these guy were supposedly the steel wall of Moscow against Nato. I guess they are really shit. I will never forgive myself for my sovietboo years except for the Sks. That was actually amazing

It is 'destroyed' as in, they lost almost all of their equipment during their retreat from Kharkiv Oblast and suffered such heavily casualties that it would take years to meaningfully reconstitute them. They will almost certainly be struck after this.
Just a reminder that 1st Guards are the elite guys that in the event of a war with NATO were supposed to defended Moscow itself. The cream of the Russian army crop and a prestige posting for officers.

This shit is getting absurd. It just should not be possible on paper. Russia is starting to make the Afghan army look good.

They were also part of the GSFG, AKA the units the Soviets expected to take on NATO in Germany if the Cold War went hot.

Izyum had a bunch of T-80U captured inside of it. That’s exclusive to the 4th Guards Tank Division which has repeatedly eaten lots of shit this war, and is one of the key units of the 1st GTA. I’d guess the 4th guards is effectively destroyed, while the 1st GTA isn’t looking much better.

Official russian sources on the other hand will never admit it. There must be Vkontakte / Telegram groups of veterans, friends and family etc. You could datamine those and also compare the confirmed losses by oryx with the supposed strength.

I mean, respect where its due: For all its defects, the Tawakalna Divison actually genuinely went into a fight they knew by that point they weren't going to survive. And they did it anyway, fricking throwing themselves in front of the Coalition advance to buy enough time for the majority of the regular Iraqi Army to flee instead of getting overrun. They literally were the reason why Saddam still had an army when it was all over.

You can talk shit about their sub-par equipment, stupid-ass leadership and doctrine etc. But you cannot deny that they damn well fought, and with all the courage you could ever hope a soldier to have.

Unironically yes. It wasn't nearly as rosy as tankie idiots make it out to have been, but it also wasn't mearly as much of a shitshow as it is now. Russia has just continously gone more and more to shit for the last 30 years.

        Anonymous

You have to understand that Russian society is, for all intents and purposes, post-apocalyptic. The apocalypse was the USSR imploding, and what you have now is like a Mad Max raider gang sifting through the cogs and wheels of the USSR's corpse. They're like Ceaser's Legion pretending they're Rome. Yeah, the general idea is still there, but it's all just a laughable echo of once was and you'd be laughing if these moronic LARPers weren't making a game out of seeing who can do the most war crimes.

I am convinced the whole idea of a few days to the borders of France was a crock of shit because they wouldn't be able to have a snowball's chance in hell of any kind of logistics dealing with WW3 and NATO and these innate Russian deficiencies. To say nothing of half of the warsaw pact being unhappy partners. I am not saying they'd have lost. Different ballgame in 1983 technologically. But they would not have done anywhere close to the on paper results.

The Soviets mobilized 300k for the Czechoslovak crackdown and about 80k Poles,Czechs,Hungarians, Bulgarians and kept the GDR ready on standby if things go wrong.
Meanwhile Putin mobilized 130-150k men to knock out the 2nd largest nation in Europe, which they had already antagonized and now was receiving training and supplies by their NATO adversaries.
The Soviets were better than the rotting corpse that is nu Russia

the best chance for a Soviet victory was between ~1963ish-1975ish. That was the only time period they had technological parity with NATO (in fact, superiority in a handful of relevant aspects) on top of their numbers advantage.

        Anonymous

In the 80s the tech gap widened but numbers gap was still big enough that they were gonna be a problem right? Not saying they'd win but it would have been cataclysmic and not the embarrassment we are seeing now I imagine.

Yep, even in 1984 NATO was asking its countries for more conventional gear commitment, to avoid the "stopping the zerg with nukes" fallback.
