No. Useful idiots and traitors are more moronic than the average vatnik. Let that sink in for a while. As others have noted, their remaining usefulness is as a burden and distraction to Ukraine by keeping them trapped there. It's the exact tactic the Soviet Union used when it collapsed and left 50 million Russians stranded as stateless non-citizens throughout Eastern Europe. It will create decades of hardship and expense. their children & grandchildren will continue the traitor's work of bringing Russia back into Ukraine in 20 years. They are congenitally moronic, a population bred specifically to be useful, ignorant, stupid, disposable slaves.

Thatcher would have been laughed out the office if she didn't
If the UK backed down, there are tons of small British island size bases at risk in the future. It was strategic as much as domestic. Economics probably had a small hand but not as much, most of the oil was discovered later.

Yep, it was more about prestige than anything else. They weren't going to have Argentina of all places take their shit.

        Anonymous

There's an unbelieveable frickton of oil "down there." Find a map, find the Falklands. The entire sea floor between the Falklands and Argentina (& Brazil) is a monster oil basin.

The problem is the insane depth of the water down there, on top of the weather. And, the oil is similar in quality to Venezuelan heavy crude: insane levels of refining and waste. It's too expensive today, but if humanity insists on committing suicide by petrochemical pollution, we will tap that basin as the rest of the world reserves dry up.

Britain (and the world) knew there was oil there (and how difficult & deep it is), but they only found out afterward that the quality was so poor. But, Britain was going to secure their territory there no matter what, and oil was a nice buzzword that the moronic masses could grasp without understanding a thing a bout it and be herded into supporting the war.

There wasn't actually popular support for the separatist movement, which is why they almost got crushed in 2014 and why RuAF had to covertly bail them out.

Most of the population fled, first the pro-Ukies and then anyone who wanted better for themselves due to the economy in the area being shit, leaving behind old boomers and the low class, who have now been eliminated due to the conscription. It would not be surprising if there was a complete collapse.

There actually was popular support from a segment of the population, basically the old working class. Donbabwe used to be the industrial heart of Ukraine back in the Soviet days and they mostly got royally screwed in the wake of '91. It's sort of like a Ukrainian rust belt of dissatisfied former manufacturing workers, except instead of voting for a cheeto they decided to join Russia.

Then those shitters rigged their cronie in to power and lived full on giant subsidies for the region and all unprofitable industries there, making them leaches that actually lived the richest when shit hit hte fan in 2014, and despite all that they still screached about "MUH FEEDING ALL UKRAINE YOU UNGREATFULL BANDERETS REEEEEEEEE!!!!".

If you're just running the frick away then you're probably not anything.

I mean literally, a spy is defined by their actions because there's nothing official about them but they do official stuff like recon and humint, that's what makes them a spy. If they're not spying then they're just people I think.

Here's the thing. You have no proof that they weren't spies who got discovered even if they claim to be retreating, and protection for PoWs wasn't written by morons who wanted to hamstring themselves. If you ditch the uniform, you are no longer a protected combatant and can be dealt with however your captors deem fitting, whether that's a summary execution, turning you over to the legal system, or anything in between. You can go read more about this in the archives if you really want, but there is a reason that you are told to make sure you keep the uniform on if you want to surrender.

Maybe that's one of the main reasons why the border guards aren't letting any Donbabwe refugees through.

They have no idea who's a deserter trying to sneak back home and who's a traitor trying to get away before the Ukrainians torch their misbegotten hides.

Russia has a number of backstops. Low-yield, tactical nukes are a backstop, and the U.S. can’t do squat other than escalate all the way to nuclear war. I mean, they’ve run out of Russian billionaire yachts to steal, what else can they do?

Likewise, sending tens of cruise missiles to knock out electricity across the Ukraine- perhaps in the dead of winter - is another backstop. A modern army can only fight for so long with no juice.

      > and the U.S. can’t do squat other than escalate all the way to nuclear war

USA will respond with tit-for-tat low yield nuclear weapons. This removes TacNukes as a backstop, as Russia isnt going to go on a full on nuclear war over ukraine.

Problem for Russia is it's been spending 1.8% of the US nuclear budget to maintain 33% more active warheads. We know the US arsenal was badly atrophying on that budget. I would not want to test my long range nuclear arsenal if I was Russia because I would know the US will know when we start firing, I will know they will have missiles on route to our sites very quickly, I will not know how many functional warheads we get off, I will know that if we hit population centers then Russia is getting genocided overnight, and I will also not know how good the US's interception capabilities are, except that they've shot down some ICBMs before.

I would be very afraid that we get just a few functional missiles out on time, with even fewer of the warheads functional, some get intercepted, and we end up killing a few million Westerners, and then still have several hundred million eradicating us afterwards. Also China sizing the Far East, the only part that might get spared.

      It doesn't.
One thing people here doesn't understand about Russians is that by and large they hate their government, who they see as corrupt and incompetent. The cult of personality revolves around Putin exclusively, who is seen as a just demi-god who has to deal with scum in all of his subordinates. He has spent decades building up this image, eliminating anyone who could threaten his position. Once he dies, whoever replaces him will have no love from the public, who have been conditioned to believe that Putin personally made the trains run on time.

This Russia doesn't. It's a sorry imitation of Imperial Russia clad in the rags and rusty armor of the USSR. It's a nation worshiping two great empires, while having none of either's strengths.
They're a bunch of squatters wallowing in the ruins of their predecessors, and using their quickly deteriorating inheritance as proof that they are still mighty. The only way they'll ever become anything of note is after they finally break down and collapse entirely, after every veneer of ego and pride has been stripped away, and all they're left with is the bare foundation they need to rebuild.
Both the Tsar and the Chairman need to be fully killed and buried deep, before a true new beginning opens up.

Why would they have a future? They don't have an ideology, an economy, demographics, institutions, really anything that would give them a future. They won't admit to their own failures, or to their past crimes (like Germany, Japan, West European colonial empires), they'll rather continue the current way than fix any issues they have because that's humiliating. Their future is slow decay while becoming a Chinese vassal, unless they magically realign themselves with the West.

Balkanization, followed by the core region of russia becoming the kind of shithole dictatorship it propped up in Belarus or Chechnya or Kazakhstan, except now they don't have any satellite states or secondary territories to milk in order to pretend everything is awesome and those other countries' people will actually be able to remove the shit dictatorships russia put in place and fricking progress for real.

I think the horror of the war woke up something deep inside Zelenksky that was deadly serious. It probably has something to do with the fact by all rights, he SHOULD have died in the first days of the war. All the experts said, "You're going to die dude in 72 hours."

He basically faced the very real possibility of his own death.

                1) he genuinely believed that Russia would not invade, and when the attack begun, he would have immediately received reports of all the betrayals that e.g. allowed Russia to take the south so easily

                2) what you said about facing his own death. in fact, remember at the very beginning of the war? they didn't need to take Kiev by force. all they needed to do was murder the top officials and politicians. plain clothes hitmen were sent into the capital, they were coming for Zelensky and yet he had to remain visible for morale. it's a pretty fricked up situation

I would be shaken, scared, and angry, and out to destroy them

It should be noted that the Ukrainians got a few days notice when the invasion plans were filtering down the chain of command. There's a comment on a perun video by a Ukrainian air defense soldier who said they got a call at 11pm to take all the equipment out into the fields as the bases were about to be hit. He said it saved the air defense around Kiev and they were knocking down quite a few planes early on.

Honestly, he's done a wonderful job by understanding that his job as president wasn't to make decisions that often but to act as a media figurehead. His refusal of an American airlift out of Kiev at the start of the war showed he understood perfectly well what he needed to do, and I do chalk that up to his massive media experience.

                Best method actor in history.

Started out playing the president on a Ukrainian TV show, then basically played the same character on Ukrainian national TV in order to get elected as the actual president, and then, when shit got really real, play the character of a fearless wartime leader on the literal world stage, and secure massively crucial foreign assistance to save your country from invaders.

Not to mention the counteroffensive in Kharkiv was timed perfectly: Putin was away, a lot of the reserves were doing war games, and a new commander had been appointed to the Kharkiv region (he got fired just 17 days in).

Not only that, but the comedian who acted as a statesman actually turned out to be a real, balsy statesman

It gets funnier when you look up what people were saying about him before the war, the shit from Leddit is pure gold:
            >Think Trump, but much more stupid puppet controlled by the kremlin to finally kill everything good we achieved in so fricking hard way with tens of thousands of deaths
            >He is pro-Russian candidat by himself. He's typical "homosexual sovetikus"
            >You are right, he just seem to be "neutral", but in reality his mind is basically "Russian". Or what we say in Ukraine: "maloros"
            >he keeps getting into international scandals, has soured relationship with USA, and Ukraine is pretty much nonexistent in international diplomacy stuff. It's embarrassing.
            >Nope, he's a piece of corrupt shit and it's only because he's terrified of protests that he hasn't signed over Ukraine to Russia
            >Some people would say he is pro-Russian, but I think he is just not pro-Ukrainian. His new year speech revolved around the phrase "who cares (what language you speak, where you come from etc)" and he certainly does not care a single bit.
            >And he did a lot for Russia such as losing money they had to pay us, making Ukrainian military to lose positions, kind of controversial exchange of captives on russian terms... and so on
            >He stopped almost every reform that started during last 5 years, he destroyed reputation of Ukraine on international arena and he is pressured by Russia.
            >he is the face of revenge of Anti-Maydan and pro-russian forces
            >Poroshenko because he was leading Ukraine to the civilized world and defended it from Russia

They're also right tbh. He was a pro-Russia, pro-appeasement candidate and did weaken the UAF. Just another way Monke fricked up by attacking instead of just waiting a year or two.

If Monke hadn't grabbed Crimea in 2014, we might well be seeing a (legit) referendum for Ukraine joining RF.
I've been saying it for 8 years, but people just haven't been listening. Putin is a very bad strategist, he's 100% focused on the short term and his long term thinking is non-existent.
Also, for the record, Obama was also kind of a bad strategist, but for the exact opposite reason. He was completely focused on long term goal at the expense of the short term.

It was more of a revolt against their corrupt oligarchs (backed by Russia) not Russia itself. Opinion of Russia only dropped after Putin chimped out and seized Crimea. The whole situation is one long geo-political blunder of Putin making enemies out of friends.

That's what I mean. Governments in Ukraine came and went. Monke could have cut ties with Yanukovych, been "Well, clearly HE was a criminal, we didn't know that about him *wink wink*" thrown their support behind another candidate without his toxicity, and in an election cycle or two they would have been gold.
Throw in some gestures like infrastructure building (pre-2014 sanctions Russian economy was really booming) and it's not outside the realms of possibility we could be seeing in 2022 a triumph of soft power as referendum reunites Ukraine and Russia. Literally, look at my picture. Those Ukrainians really did love themselves some Russians until Monke decided to frick them in the ass without lube.

Now Ukraine is gone, probably forever. They created the anti-russia on their border they were so afraid of.

that's a lot of ifs, ukrainians could see which countries were richer in the end, and having a favorable views of a country isn't the same as wanting to be part of that country's economic sphere, but I get your point, Russia was never all that good at making friends

Putin's violent actions have pretty much driven Ukraine into the Western camp. Ukraine is in zero mood to talk anymore.

Ironically, him taking such a standoff posture before the war ensured Ukraine would win. He did everything in his power, save for crawling on his knees to suck Putin's wiener, to show he didn't want a fight with Russia. Because he did that, when Monkee had his chimpout and invaded anyway, there was absolutely zero question who was the aggressor. The only people backing Russia are their existing simps; everyone else is either horrified or directly arming Ukraine now. There's no hemming or hawing about "they're not doing enough to avoid a war, this is a Both Sides Are Bad issue".

Yes, obviously. I'm saying the way Zelensky played it, the Western Euros couldn't cuck them out of support, because he basically forced Putin to reveal himself as a blatant warmonger. Everyone knew he was before, but he always had masks he hid behind to deny the worst of the culpability (muh Donbawbewean chillun massacre, muh Little Green Men on Vacation). This time, he was forced to show his hand and go "Yeah, I'm a bloodthirsty warmongering shit, and I don't care." He was so blatant, that now the only way you can possibly support Russia is being an obviously bought-and-paid-for Russian shill. If Zelensky hadn't gone so conciliatory, people could find some way to weasel out of supporting them, but not anymore.

Also being a dude who offered Putin PEACE, he can't be painted as a warmonger.

I understand the sentiment, but don’t forger that 1935 - 1945 was a direct consequence of the humiliation and resentment after 1918

No, its a consequence of not following through and appeasing Germany as Hitler dashed every single line of that "humiliation". Had they Brits and French actually gone through with spanking the frick out of them for getting uppity, WW2 wouldn't have began. It'd be a largely impotent German army/navy getting dabbed on.

If anyone has any sources on it being a drug trafficking hub please post it, I imagine it'll be in Russian so that's why I've struggled to find anything.

Somewhat related to that, it's all a huge reservoir of AIDS, in fact the HIV epidemic in Ukraine spread from Dombabwe.

It is. Both ldnr and transnistria are drug hubs. Source: am ukie. Also Transnistria is a slave trafficking hub, haven't heard anything like that about ldnr, though. Literally 3rd link on google is about ldnr drug shop expanding to russian-occupied territories and after that a whole lot of news about arresting drug traffickers to/from ldnr. https://novosti.dn.ua/ru/news/330195-magaziny-iz-l-dnr-nalazhivayut-prodazhu-narkotikov-v-zahvachennyh-gorodah

in the case of Donbabwe, the Russians have thankfully depolulated it of most turn coats, in one way or another.

Russia has nothing, the longer they stay the less they have left. The question is how much they are willing to give up, if their "red line" is Crimea and Ukraine is adamant about retaking it, they will probably use nuke as it will take to long to mobilize an army and create some proper defense.

Most likely tactical nukes, in the case of strategic (to force Ukraine to a "white peace")I think Kiev is an unlikely target, they probably also won't take the cities with a high percentage of people that have Russian as first language.
Lviv is probably to big and to close to the polish border, but a medium sized city between Lviv and Kiev is the most likely imo.

There is no "just a little bit of nuclear warfare" any form of atomic weaponry used is going to have every county collectively spit roast Russia.

maybe, but the leadership in Russia has already demonstrated a major failure in their assessment of things.
They invaded Ukraine with a miniscule army, they did not anticipate the severity of the sanctions, they did not mobilize or do anything to fix the military situation despite the writing being on the wall for months.

They probably don't anticipate a nuclear war with the west will break out because they nuke Ukraine (which i don't think it will either), It's not certain either that they anticipate India, China, Saudi Arabia becoming hostile against them if they use nukes.

Nukes are definitely on the table.

They also undermined their own "cause" by getting a ton of Separatists killed in cannon fodder assaults.

Now Loyal Ukrainians will replace them.

How is it that these morons still don't realize they're nothing more then a meat shield for Russia? If they love Russia so much, why not just move over there? Why are they trying to take parts of Ukraine with them? Do they not realize that Russia is going to absorb the Donbass when the war ends?

So whats the political ramifications for Russia after all this is done, will countries with land disputes feel embolden knowing they're dealing with a paper bear? Will Russia be forced to acquiesce more to save face? Will anyone dealing with Russian equipment have serious doubts about how effective it is?

If I were Ukraine, I'd relentlessly bash Russia over the head with their treachery.

      >"You said you were going to help the Separatists. Instead you turned them away at the border and used them as cannon fodder. ALL nations even CONSIDERING an alliance with Russia? Look at the fate of these so-called Separatists, left to die by Russia. They're only alive because we showed more mercy than Russia ever did."

Many of the "Separatists" are just guys forced to fight. Some of them are salvageable.

If you read pro-Russia blogs you'll learn that the columns of people at the Russian border prove that the withdrawal and evacuation was planned and they are the Russian military is protecting ethnic Russian civvies from reprisals by bloodthirsty Ukrainians.

Man you people are easily led by BS. There’s 0 possibility of Russia abandoning the Donbas or the separatists there. Putin NEEDS the foothold to threaten the shale gas fields and keep the West out of them.

      Anonymous

Not really, freeze the conflict on the border, occasionally lob a cruise missile or some artillery over and no Western company is gonna go near those fields and risk their capital.
It was never about those shale fields, it was always about the idea that if Ukrainians became free and prosperous, Russians might finally wake up and look at them and go "If them, why not us?"

Not to mention Ukraine can justifiably contest Russia's claim to be "the superior Slav civilization".

Russians are threatened and frightened of a rival Slav power, especially one that goes so far West.

          Anonymous

Or to put it more precisely. Russia's "Westernization" was always elites forcing it on the people. Things didn't really change on a deep level, as the changes were resented.

In Ukraine, the people demanded to go West. The change isn't superficial and skin-deep.

    This is simple as shit.
Russia will never nook unless they are invaded, and even then it's doubtful. Here's the catch: literally no on wants to invade Russia. What the flying frick would you stand to gain?? I mean MAYBE China wants the resource rich east but realistically no one is ever gonna touch Russia. This is actually a double edged sword because it means the war will always ravage Russia's neighbors and not itself, and they know that, so they have little incentive to stop sperging

      >dress as civilians
You know, a soldier dressing up as civilian is a warcrime and gives up their rights as the enemy soldiers. Meaning that it is not required to take them as prisoners of war and they can be shot on the spot.
